Leading through Servant Leadership By the end of our time together, you will be able to: Define servant leadership Define a paradigm Describe the three different levels of listening List the 10 most important characteristics of servant leadership Evaluate individual levels of servant leadership characteristics Summarize servant leadership best practices
What Really Matters? If you had a time machine when and where would you travel? If your house was burning down, what three items would you save and why? (people would be safe already) What is one gift that you will never forget and why?
Describe Great Leaders
What is Servant Leadership? Robert K. Greenleaf ( ) The servant-leader is servant first It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead.
Leader as Servant Leader Leader
Servant Leadership Characteristics 1. Listening 2. Empathy 3. Healing 4. Awareness 5. Persuasion 6. Conceptualization 7. Foresight 8. Stewardship 9. Growth 10. Building Community Leader
Servant Leader Inventory Score I have made a deep commitment to listen intently to others so that I can identify and clarify the purpose of the group. I normally assume the good intentions of others and I understand and empathize with them by accepting and recognizing their special and unique spirit. I search for wholeness and the potential to heal myself and others so that transformation and integration can take place. I have the capacity for introspection and the ability to recognize myself as an individual who is separate from the environment and other individuals (Awareness). When making decisions I rely on persuasion to convince others in order to build consensus within the group, rather than relying upon my positional authority. I bring visions to reality by looking at a problem or the organization from a conceptualizing perspective (from an idea or picture), rather than just looking at the day-to-day operations. When solving complex problems I use my intuitive mind to understand lessons from the past, the realities of the present, and the likely consequence of a decision that affects the future. I hold the institution in trust for the greater good of society. I believe people have an intrinsic value beyond their tangible contributions as workers, thus I m deeply committed to the personal, professional, and spiritual growth of each individual within the organization. I seek to identify a means for building community among those who work within the institution.

Role Play An advanced team member (title or tenure) and a junior team member on your team who have had a good working relationship. Recently the junior team member has grown a great deal in knowledge and expertise and is ready for greater challenges. The advanced team member has failed to respect this growth. Their relationship is now becoming strained and they have been at odds. Discuss which Characteristics apply. Role Play how you would approach each of these team members.
