Why does Servant Leadership apply to community associations? 2 Why is Servant before Leader? It s not about you. It keeps ego at bay It sets a tone of being present to help It creates trust It reduces the Animal Farm effect We re all equal, but some are more equal than others. 3 The Test of Servant Leadership Do those served grow as persons? Do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants? And, what is the effect on the least privileged in society? Will they benefit, or at least not be further deprived? - Greenleaf, Servant Leadership, p.27 What does THAT mean? Are you, by your leadership, making a positive difference to those around you? If Leadership is Influence, are your decisions and actions inspiring others to do more, be more, serve more? Kind of like the Butterfly Effect does your leadership make a positive difference all the way down the line? 7 Be AUTHENTIC Be REAL no foolery, fakery or forgery Are you the same person in PUBLIC that you are in PRIVATE? You can spot someone who s disingenuous a mile away what makes you think they can t see you? This is NOT an excuse to be rude, self-absorbed or selfindulgent Know Yourself Be yourself Be VUNERABLE An open mind and an open heart Be willing to admit mistakes and/or failures The most important phrase: I m sorry, I was wrong Key Point: Expressing emotion is different from Acting on emotion Do the former, not the latter Be ACCEPTING Recognize the frailty of the human condition No one is perfect few walk on water Doesn t mean you tolerate bad behavior Doesn t mean you don t perform critical analysis It does mean that you take the person at face value and judge the idea or concept, NOT the person 2017 CACM Law Seminar 7

8 Be PRESENT More than just being in the room Put aside all other tasks and FOCUS Be invested in the moment Feed back what was said to show that you were listening and you have a correct understanding of what was said Example of John Wooden treated others like they were the only one in the room Be USEFUL Be of service in some positive fashion What can you do to assist/help/add value?
