1 IB ENGLISH SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENTS Ms. Malone Congratulations on completing the first of two years in IB English! In order to keep our momentum and to prepare for IB English 12, you will need to complete several assignments over the summer. 1. Write your draft of the Written Assignment essay based on one of the three World Lit texts. You will have your topic/thesis approved by me before you start your outline and then write the draft. Please print and refer to the Written Assignment document on Edline prior to June 20 since Edline is not available over the summer. This draft essay is due on Friday, September 1, Choose one text from the provided list, AND a text of your choosing. Read the texts and write a Readers Journal for each work. Choose an aspect of the work (character, theme, style, device, etc.) and write words to examine the significance of the chosen aspect on your understanding of the text. These TWO journals are due on Tuesday, August 30, Read the five sonnets attached. Complete SOAPSTone for each poem (see attached) and identify a central focus for the poem. Choose ONE Poem and write a commentary (2-3 pages) for the chosen poem. This work is due on Tuesday, August 30, The commentary will be submitted to Turnitin.com when we are back to school. Following the specific instructions given, complete the written assignments by typing and printing them on 8½ x 11 white paper. Use Times New Roman font (12) and one-inch margins. Complete the readings by the first day of school. Be prepared for a timed writing and/or a test on these readings. Reminders for the Written Commentary: Instead of attempting to prove a thesis, theme, or central idea about the passage; you are analyzing and interpreting the entire piece, noting how literary devices and elements communicate meaning theme, mood, and/or tone. Begin with an introduction which provides a sense of the manner in which you are approaching the piece and identifies any overarching meaning. Look for shifts and progressions of such meaning as theme, tone, and mood. Identify what you see and consider its impact on meaning. For your body paragraphs focus on tracing those shifts you ve identified by thoroughly describing, analyzing, and interpreting the meaning you see in them. You do not have to analyze every single word, but you should be very thorough in your analysis and be sure to connect any analytic point you make to the meaning you interpret. Be sure to present your ideas in an organized fashion and to include all parts of the poem or passage in your analysis. If you have questions concerning your assignment, please do not hesitate to Ms. Malone. You should have a copy of the IB Commentary rubric in your English notebook. 2 Let s begin with two Sonnets written by Petrarch Sonnet 134 I find no peace, and have no arms for war, and fear and hope, and burn and yet I freeze, and fly to heaven, lying on earth s floor, and nothing hold, and all the world I seize. My jailer opens not, nor locks the door, nor binds me to hear, not will loose my ties; Love kills me not, nor breaks the chains I wear, nor wants me living, nor will grant me ease. I have no tongue, and shout; eyeless, I see; I long to perish, and I beg for aid; I love another, and myself I hate. Weeping I laugh, I feed on misery, by death and life so equally dismayed: for you, my lady, am I in this state. Sonnet 12 If my life of bitter torment and of tears could be derided more, and made more troubled, that I might see, by virtue of your later years, lady, the light quenched of your beautiful eyes, and the golden hair spun fine as silver, and the garland laid aside and the green clothes, and the delicate face fade, that makes me fearful and slow to go weeping: then Love might grant me such confidence that I'd reveal to you my sufferings the years lived through, and the days and hours: and if time is opposed to true desire, it does not mean no food would nourish my grief: I might draw some from slow sighs. 2
