1 Sanctity of Life and Human Dignity edited by Kurt Bayertz, Philosophisches Seminar, UniversitatMunster, Germany PHILOSOPHY AND MEDICINE 52 'Sanctity of life' and 'human dignity 1 are two bioethical concepts that play an important role in bioethical discussions. Despite their separate history and content, they have similar functions in these discussions. In many cases they are used to bring a difficult or controversial debate to an end. They serve as unquestionable cornerstones of morality, as rocks able to weather the storms of moral pluralism. This book provides the reader with analyses of these two concepts from different philosophical, professional and cultural points of view. Sanctity of Life and Human Dignity presents a comparative analysis of both concepts. Contents and Contributors: Preface; K. Bayertz, H.T. Engelhardt, Jr. Introduction. 2 Secular Bfoeftties feitheological Perspective edited by Earl E Shelp, Foundation for Interfaith Research & Ministry, Houston, TX, USA THEOLOGY AND MEDICINE 8 This collection of 13 original essays by theological and religious ethicists challenges the sufficiency of secular bioethics. While acknowledging the importance of procedural considerations in bioethics, the contributors raise fundamental questions about the priority according to the autonomy of persons and the legitimacy of excluding religious reasoning in making medical-moral decisions and public policies. The analyses of theories, practices, concepts and methods reveal inadequacies and weaknesses within secular bioethics, while illustrating the distinctive and enriching contributions of theology and faith traditions to bioethics. These essays suggest that the relegation of religion to the margins of bioethics discussions is premature and, perhaps, ill advised. A lively debate regarding the adequacy of secular bioethics is joined in this collection. It will be built upon in subsequent literature on the subject. Contents and Contributors: Introduction; E.E. Shelp. Section I: Secular Inadequacies and Theological Contributions. Bioethics and the Spirit of Secularism; C.S. Campbell. Minding our Language: Metaphors and Biomedical Ethics; G.R. Winslow. 3 An Essay in Practical Ethics by Mary Gore Forrester PHILOSOPHICAL STUDIES SERIES 66 Forrester discusses animal rights, obligations concerning future generations, abortion, limiting medical treatment, and euthanasia. Persons are defined as individuals who ought to be treated in accordance with all sound moral principles. The author develops an account of what moral principles are sound, how we can apply them to complex situations, and what makes it reasonable to treat individuals in accordance with particular moral principles. This discussion puts the book's practical conclusions on a sounder basis than much other work on practical ethics. Most such authors state some general principles, but say little about why these principles should be accepted. Moreover, they rarely show how general principles can generate answers to specific dilemmas. Some even maintain that general principles are irrelevant. Since Forrester is both a nurse practitioner and a philosopher, she has had direct acquaintance with many agonizing situations in medicine. Summaries of the theoretical conclusions are included to enable nonprofessionals to follow the discussion of practical issues. The book will thus interest not only professional philosophers, but also non-philosophers concerned with problems in medical and environmental ethics, abortion, and animal rights. Contents: Preface. Part I: Problems and Persons. Introduction. 1. The Central Feature of Personhood. Part II: Theory and Justification. 2. Moral Knowledge. 3. Outline of a Basic Moral Theory. 4. The Difficulties of Applying Moral Principles. 5. Solving Moral Problems. Part III: What Makes an Individual a Person. 6. Who Ought to Get Moral Consideration? 7. Reasons for Granting Personhood. 8. 5 INFORMATION FOR AUTHORS MANUSCRIPTS should be typed doublespaced on one side of good quality paper. Contributions should not exceed 25 pages, including notes and references. Please leave wide margins to allow for editorial notes and instructions to the printer. Five high-quality copies should be submitted, and a complete, sixth copy retained by the author. Classical manuscript form is to be used, i.e., having an introduction and sections with headings. An abstract of approximately 150 words accompanied by a few key words should be placed at the beginning of each article. The title page should indicate the author's name, title of the contribution, and, if necessary, a condensed title for use as a 'running head', which should not exceed 45 characters, including spaces. The author's full affiliation should appear at the bottom of the first page of the article. Each page of the manuscript should be consecutively numbered. Indicate italicized words and titles of books and journals by single underlining, bold-face by wavy underlining. QUOTATION MARKS: Double quotes should be used for short direct quotations. Extensive quotations should be set off in a separate paragraph. When quoting another author, always indicate the corresponding page number of the source. Single quotes should be used for words or phrases set off for emphasis. NOTES: Do not use footnotes. All notes that do not belong to the head of the article should be numbered consecutively and placed at the end of the article, before the bibliography. A note that refers to the head of the article should be indicated by an asterisk. TABLES should be consecutively numbered using Roman numerals and referred to as 'Table' in the text. Give a short title to each table. The use of vertical lines in tables is discouraged. FIGURES should be referred to as 'Fig.' in the captions, but spelled out in the text. They should be numbered consecutively. Give a detailed caption to each figure, refer to the figure in the text and note the approximate location in the margin. The captions should be collected on a separate sheet or sheets. Write your name, the figure number and indicate its top in blue pencil on the back of each figure. Only camera-ready figures are accepted, i.e., original drawings or glossy photos, no photocopies. Figures which are not reproducible may hold up publication until new copies are obtained. Check to see that all lettering will still be legible after the figure is reduced to fit the width of the journal page. Line drawings should be in India ink on white or tracing paper. REFERENCES (BIBLIOGRAPHY): A bibliographical list of all and only those works cited in your contribution must be headed 'References' or 'Bibliography', and placed at the end of the paper after 'Notes'. A journal reference should contain the names of all authors with initials, year of publication, full title of the cited paper within single quotes, full name of journal underlined or in italics, volume number, and first and last page numbers. The biliography should be an alphabetical and chronological ordering of the internal references. Please refer to issues of The Journal of Medicine and Philosophy for guidance or contact the Managing Editor. PROOFS: The author will receive two first proofs in page form from the publisher along with an annotated copy of the manuscript, and is requested to return one corrected proof with the manuscript to the publisher without delay. In those cases where proofs are not returned promptly, they will be read by the editor against the second manuscript copy and returned to the publisher without the author's comments. Second proofs will be read only by the publisher to ensure that corrections have been made as noted by the authors. Care should be taken to ensure that all contributions are typographically correct. A few corrections to the text are acceptable, but authors may expect to be charged for the cost of making extensive alterations to the text and/or illustrations once in proof. OFFPRINTS: The author will receive, without charge, 25 copies of the article. Additional offprints may be ordered when the proofs are returned to the publisher. NO PAGE CHARGES are levied on authors or their institutions. Consent to publish in this journal entails the author's irrevocable and exclusive authorisation of the publisher to collect any sums or considerations for copying or reproduction payable by third parties (as mentioned in article 17, paragraph 2, of the Dutch Copyright Act of 1912 and in the Royal Decree of June 20, 1974 (S.351), pursuant to article 16b of the Dutch Copyright Act of 1912) and/or to act in or out of court in connection herewith.
