8 Schütz, adapt and ed Alice Parker Selah Pulishing Co, Inc Order rom your avorite dealer or at wwwselahpucom (Or call in the US and Canada) This document is provided or review purposes only It is illegal to photocopy this music Psalms or Barara I Schütz: (Psalm 0) II Schütz: How Lovely Is Your Dwelling (Psalm 4) III Schütz: Praise Ye the Lord (Psalm 117) These three settings ring together a remarkaly large numer o participants Their source is the Becker Psalter o Heinrich Schütz, composed and compiled in the years leading up to 127, revised and enlarged as opus 14, and pulished in 11 The texts were German verse paraphrases o the entire 150 Psalms y the Leipzig theologian Cornelius Becker Schütz composed 10 new melodies or these rie hymns, and set all o them in delightully varied harmonizations ased on modal scales He had made several settings or the choiroys in his training, ut developed the whole volume only ater the death o his wie in 125 I we egin with the antecedents o these poems, the anonymous early singers who gave us the Herew Psalms, and ollow their handing down through countless translations in dierent tongues to the present, we come to the three translators here represented Jaroslav ada, a Lutheran o Slavic descent, living in St Louis, Missouri, has written many memorale hymn texts Jean Janzen, o Russian Mennonite descent, lives in Fresno, Caliornia, and has many pulished secular and sacred poems Henry S Drinker was a physician and musiclover who lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the irst part o the 20 th century; he translated all the Bach and Schütz choral works in his usy lie My work here has een principally as compiler and editor The Psalms are presented sustantially as Schütz wrote them (exactly in the case o How Lovely Is Your Dwelling ), with some added repetitions and very careul enhancements o the voicing to suit the occasion The editorial markings are all mine I have long elieved that the music o the Becker Psalter elongs in the lirary o every devotee o sacred music, alongside the chorales o JS Bach They have so much to teach us o complexity within simplicity, o sinuous sutlety in rhythm, melody, and harmony, and o expressive textsetting Composers, choirs, and organists adept in this music will e etter musicians, as well as having a wider vision o the possiilities o the hymns used in our daily worship All these people are gathered together in these three anthems in the name o a woman who lived lie to the ullest, reminding us o music and poetry s endless power to console and delight us even in loss Alice Parker wwwselahpucom
