Please use it as a compliment to and with any of my other books, CDs and workbooks. I realize that many people have very different viewpoints and beliefs about life, death and dying. It is important to me to state that the viewpoints I have written about in this ebook are my viewpoints based on my personal experiences and my interpretations of those experiences. 6 Introduction It is important for me to mention that the writings contained herein are based on my personal experience and my personal learning. I am not intending to persuade anyone to believe what I have come to know as my own personal truths. Rather, I am intending to share my own experience, strength, wisdom and knowledge to assist others along their journey of learning their personal truths. Many people ask me how I have come to know these things with such confidence and certainty that they are true. To them, I tell the story of Kenya. Kenya was my first dog (apart from the family dogs of my childhood). I rescued her in 1998 from a pound in South Central Los Angeles. I went there on purpose; with the clear intention that I wanted to save a life. I wanted to make a monumental difference in the world, and from my perspective at that time, I felt that saving the life of an animal was a worthy, important and valuable difference to make. Within two days of rescuing her, I brought her to the vet for her first heath exam, at which point the veterinarian told me that she had Parvo (a deadly virus) and that I should bring her back to South Central, have her euthanized and get another dog. To this day, I cannot believe that this vet did not first offer me the options for her recovery -- he just doomed her to death. Thank God I did not doom her, because Kenya lived a wonderful life for almost thirteen years, during which time, I came to know that she was my teacher and guide; a true master who came to me to be of service to me in my journey of my own personal awakening and enlightenment. 7 Everything really, really important in my life I learned from Kenya, so when I write this ebook, I am not just teaching what I have studied or learned from others, although certainly, I have learned so much from countless teachers in my life; I am teaching what I have learned from my own personal experiences with Kenya and with so many other animals who came to assist in my learning, so that I could then go forward and share that learning with you. 8 What is a Soul Although the concept of what a soul is may be uniquely defined by different people, most people can now agree that in general, a soul is the part of us which is: The immaterial part of our being The part that unites our body and mind in the physical world The essence and/or energy of a being The sacred spark of all life The limitless capacity within everyone and everything The place where all thought and feeling comes from The part of us which we sometimes call our intuition or gut instinct The part of us which many believe is our unconscious While modern western science is still attempting to prove or disprove the existence of a soul, even early philosophers spoke about souls, for example: Plato said that the soul is a spiritual principle of thought which governs human thought, choice and action Aristotle acknowledged that each being is composed of matter and form and that the soul takes place within those Shakespeare noted the soul as the player in a grand play Either way, I believe there are some things regarding what a soul is or is not on which we can all agree, for example, a soul is not: A body A mind A thought A emotion An experience A reaction to an experience or to another person Anything tangible Created by Lori Spagna at efil s god and efil s god Spirit. 9 Regardless of your faith, denomination, religion, age or creed, we can all agree that there is inside of each of us an essence or energy of some sort which is undefinable and yet is the very thing which provides us each with our own free will, free thought, feelings and emotions. From my perspective, I generally refer to this thing as love, because certainly, inside of every living being exists an infinite well of love which we can all access at anytime, although for some, it is just buried a little deeper, which might even make it a little richer. This kind of love is endless and cannot be measured. It is unquantifiable, and it doesn t matter if the living being it exists in is a human animal or any other kind of animal; it exists none-the-less. The soul is the same in all living things. 10 Do animals have souls? Most organized religions do not acknowledge the souls of animals and yet any animal lover or pet lover on the face of the globe can tell you that without a doubt, their companion animals have unique and distinct personalities and are extremely soulful, loving beings. In fact, even the book of genesis recognizes the souls of animals. I have worked, interacted and communicated with as well as learned from all kinds of animals, including: Whales Dolphins Seals Sea Lions Orangutans Elephants Bats Giraffes Pigs Cows Horses Rabbits Birds Guinea Pigs Dogs Cats Based on my personal connections, communications and dialogues with all of these different species, animals not only have souls, but they also have a knowing that us humans seem to have forgotten. 11 This is actually fairly easy to understand from a scientific perspective when we consider the following piece of information: the human brain is the only brain which is predominantly left brained. The left brain is the logical, rational, organizing brain. All of the other animals on the planet are predominantly right brained. The right brain is the sensing, feeling, intuitive brain. When we consider the fact that it is the left brain which operates from a logical, thinking place, and the right brain which operates from a feeling, sensing place, we can understand that humans must use our left, logical brain to explain and understand that which we feel, sense and perceive through our right brains. It might seem as though this very simple fact makes us a superior race, as has been widely believed for many years. However, animals don t really require that much processing. For them, their right brain is able to do all of that without the logic and analytical processing. We could even say, and I know this to be true, that the animals are even faster at processing information because the information does not have to pass through the processing center of the left brain. They are more in tune with their intuitive, feeling and sensing perception than we humans are. In addition, animals have a free will, and anyone who has ever listened to a bark or a dog, or witnessed the finicky nature of a cat can truly attest to this fact as well. We humans, in our own ignorance (I do not mean to offend anyone, it s just that this is simply a statement of the fact that we have not known this information in the past) and disrespect of animals (including one another) have often (and usually unknowingly) taken that free will away from the animals. 12 What Are the Animals Souls Doing Here? Most people don t actually consider that our animals are actually healing us humans. They take on all of our emotional and physical sensations and they teach us about our behavioral challenges. To many people, that concept seems absurd, and yet, it is absolutely true. I can personally share countless stories of clients and their pets, as well as my own stories about Kenya and so many other animals. For example, when I moved to Maui in 2008, it was just after my decision to divorce. I had no idea about the pain and sadness that would accompany that divorce and the feelings of rejection that came with it. I had no idea how little compassion I would be extended from my family and friends, who could not understand or empathize with what I was experiencing. All of my resulting sadness and anger, which I was unable to release, eventually became energy that Kenya took on for me, in an effort to heal me. She took that pain, sadness, anger, grief and suffering on as a gift to me for having saved her life when she first came into my life. And while many people may not believe or subscribe to the concept that emotions are energy and show up as physical manifestations in our bodies (which is another topic entirely), it is a Universal Truth that what we send out comes back to us ~ also called The Law of Karma. Kenya repaid a Karmic debt of healing and life saving for me. As we will come to see, it was part of our soul agreements to one another, our sacred contract with one another, and her divine blueprint. Created by Lori Spagna at efil s god and efil s god Spirit. Some are companion animals who absorb our emotional and physical pain. Some are spirit guides and teachers of our sacred contracts and agreements. Animals can and do reincarnate and often pick a perfect time to come into a new body so that they can end up with the correct human. 14 Soul Agreements and Sacred Contracts The concept of soul agreements is perhaps one of the most esoteric and metaphysical elements when understanding animals in the afterlife, after all, this is one of the few areas of spirituality which is still not completely explainable by quantum physics. However, if we dissect one of the fundamental principles of quantum physics, we know that all particles stay in a state of perpetual motion and that every particle, no matter how small, has intelligence. According to the laws of quantum physics, we also know energy continually renews and recycles and therefore never dies. And since we can also say scientifically that all living beings are energy, it does make sense logically that all living beings never die, and never loose consciousness, since every molecule of energy has innate intelligence. Therefore, the reordering of any and all molecules is absolute. Any molecule from the consciousness of any other living being just recycles itself in form and matter. This concept, which is also a Universal Law, applies to all things, including all living beings. Below are some other elements to help you understand soul agreements and sacred contracts: Soul agreements are agreements made between souls before we incarnate. These agreements are made between humans and humans, animals and humans and animals and animals we essentially agree before we come to this life to have experiences, learn from one another and teach one another. In most cases, all of the key details are worked out before we even incarnate. If you are here now, chances are that you made an agreement with an animal and you are here now by prior appointment; in fact, every life lesson is a soul agreement and/or sacred contract playing itself out. 15 This concept may be somewhat radical to some people, but in the path of evolutionary experience, our souls, human and animal, are here to have experiences. Along the journey, things happen to each of us, including our animals, which our souls long to play out and evolve as a result of. Therefore, before we actually incarnate, we make certain agreements with other souls who have impacted us in our lifetimes. Essentially, one soul says to another, let s learn this (thing) together. You play this part, I will play that part, and we ll let ourselves have this experience and this learning so we can come to know whatever it is we want to know and then be done with it and move on to something new. The animals do the same thing, and often times, they come into their bodies to assist us as we learn these things, because as animals, the people who love them most are often most willing, and therefore least resistant, to learn what they need to learn from their pets or the animals they love. This becomes easier to understand when we consider the fact that the animals don t carry the ego baggage that we have, for expressly this purpose. Then, based on all of this information, our souls make these agreements and essentially sign soul contracts with one another and with our pets, and these contracts get played out with and between us, other humans and our pets throughout our lives together. 16 Divine Blueprints and Soul Purposes A divine blueprint takes the concept of soul agreement one step farther. A divine blueprint essentially says, This is the blueprint plan for my life, and in this blueprint, every major soul agreement and sacred soul contract is going to played out along the timeline of my life. These blueprints are written into our genetic makeup and become part of our purpose on this planet. It doesn t actually matter what kind of animal we are speaking about in this scenario, human or animal, we all have these divine blueprints and soul purposes. Here are some of the elements of divine blueprints: The blueprint is a plan which is drawn for each soul prior to incarnation. The blueprint has the guidance of the individual s angels and guides. Souls plan rendezvous on earth to help others fulfill specific lessons or experiences. Soul agreements are generally connected to past life learning with and/or between those souls. These agreements are made to clear residual life/emotional energies from past traumas and life experiences. This becomes part of the soul s divine mission. This is an energetic resonance (sometimes recognized in the moment when to souls meet and can be referred to love at first sight); it is the recognition of a soul remembered and reconnected the in the physical world. These blueprints often wake up our souls to some aspect of us which had been asleep/dormant until that particular point in time. 17 There are many who might ask what is the role of free will and free intent and how does that factor into soul agreements, sacred contracts and divine blueprints. This is a fair and legitimate question. Of course we have free will to do and behave any way we choose, it s just that along the way, there are going to be certain unavoidable experiences which will factor into every free will thought or action we take, and those unavoidable experiences are the contracts, agreements and blueprints in action. Now here s the real beauty around the subject of soul purposes, soul agreements, divine contracts, blueprints and purposes: animals haven t forgotten their divinity they way we humans have. Hard to believe, right? Think of it this way: the animals of this planet are not bombarded with constant and continuous information overwhelm. They don t have all that incoming information related to school, media, human opinion, an endless to do list, appointments, money, career, etc., etc., etc. They live in the moment and stay connected to all that is and all that exists in that moment...and all that is and all that exists is literally, the soul of everyone, everything, and an empty no-thingness of no matter, no space and no time, all at once. 18 Guardians of Our Purpose With this understanding, we can then realize that the animals, especially our pets, are actually here in service to us, as guardians to help each of us fulfill our life s purpose and to learn certain things and they do this in total and complete awareness. A great way to understand this is to consider that in the same way that you always know your name, but aren t always thinking of it, the animals always know their purpose here as well as their connectedness to everyone and everything, even though they may not always be thinking of it. Here is some additional information about animals acting as guardians of our soul purposes: Animals as a group are in charge of all of our blue prints. Companion animals can recall not only their own soul s blueprints but also those of their human guardians. The animal holds the energetic vibration and frequency of our blueprint in his or her physical, emotional and spiritual body and does everything in his or her power to direct our attention toward aligning with this original plan so we can each find peace and harmony. Their work will continue until we learn the lessons we chose to learn and even beyond that and in the event that we don t learn the lessons, other animals will step in and assist with or even take over in the process until we do. 19 Animals as Teachers and Guides Not only are the animals guardians of our own blue prints, they are also essentially teachers and guides throughout all areas of our every day lives. In all of my years of experience traveling throughout the world and visiting countries all over the planet, as well as working with different kinds of animals in so many countries, there is one reining truth I have learned. The animals in every geographic area, in every country, state, community, environment and family, are simply demonstrating behaviors which the humans in their environments need to learn. I have seen this so consistently, even in the local dog parks, that I now know this is true, beyond any doubt whatsoever. This is how animals act as guardians of our purpose, which is essentially, their purpose. Moreover, the animals are actually aware that this is their role and purpose on the planet. Consider the eco-location of the dolphins. This eco-location creates sound waves and vibrations which bounce off of everything and anything and actually escalates the vibration of the planet. The same is true for the fluke (tail) slaps that whales practice, which creates a ripple effect in the water and escalates the vibration of our planet. Obviously, an entire library could be filled with books on the subject of how different animals serve humans and this planet in these ways. You can learn more about vibration, frequency and energy in my book, Animal Communication, How to Communicate with Animals. Did you ever watch a pet sleeping and see his or her eyes moving in a dream state? That s an example of a pet connecting to the divine, all knowing source, just as it is with us humans in our dream state. 20 This teaching from the animals continues even after the animal s body dies, or after the animal has passed on to other realms and dimensions. It is for this reason, we can and are able to connect with animals in the afterlife, in the same way that we can connect with humans in the afterlife. The teaching by and from the animals can and does continue after they cross. They want to connect with us so that we can continue to learn, grow and evolve. Once they have passed on, animals will connect with us in many of the same ways they connect with us when they are in their bodies, for example, in dreams and with signs, symbols and cues in the physical and non physical world. 21 Death and Dying from the Animal s Viewpoint Us humans are extremely attached to our bodies. We adorn them with beautiful jewelry. We lavish them with lovely clothes. We work them out in health clubs and participate in various exercise routines. We stare at them in the mirror and determine ways that we can make them prettier, skinnier, more muscular, healthier, stronger and more perfect, or whatever. We use our time and energy cooking for them and feeding them. We fill them up with all kinds of medicines, drugs and other products to make them better when we forget how wonderfully they serve us. Sometimes, we even listen to them when they get tired and tell us to slow down and rest. But the thing is, we are not our bodies. Our bodies are simply the vehicles or the cases or the shells which house us. The animals already know this. From their perspective, they know that they are not their body, and therefore, they are much less attached to it. They know that they will always be, with or with out a body, so they don t feel as attached to those bodies as we humans do. They also know that they can choose to re-enter a new body and choose a new role whenever they want to, and beyond that, they know that they never really leave their humans, or that they can revisit at any time, whenever they choose. It is simply not as traumatic for them as it is for us. Even beyond that, because they are always connected to their divine purpose as guardians, teachers and spiritual beings beyond their bodies, they take the perspective that they are performing their service to us for as long as their contract permits, and when their contract is up, they move on. 22 From the animal s viewpoint, they would prefer that we honor their lives and the service they provide to us with their lives. They don t need for us to grieve over them; they need for us to honor their role as teachers and guides so we get the lessons and our souls can move on and evolve. From the human viewpoint, this can make it much easier to accept their deaths, wouldn t you agree? 23 Letting Them Go Assisting Them with the Crossing Letting our pets go is perhaps the hardest part of the death and dying process. We don t want to loose them. However, it is our wishing for them to stay which often makes their transition even more difficult, not only for them but also for us. Generally speaking, our animals hold on to their lives, for us, no matter how traumatic or difficult their lives may be, or how much discomfort they may be in, until we are ready to release them. I am not suggesting early or premature termination of pet lives. There have been countless cases where human intervention ended an animal s life before the animal was consciously ready to leave. In fact, most cases of euthanasia in animal pounds and the needless and callous deaths of animals in puppy mills, as well as the entire farming industry are evidence of this. However, at this point in our evolutionary process, there does come a time in every individual s life when we must face death, and ideally, even welcome it as a passage into another kind of existence. It is helpful to remember these points at such times: Our wishing for them to stay often makes the transition more difficult for both of us. This can delay the actual separation of the soul from the body. When the time is right for a soul to depart its body, no one can stop it, so it s best to do whatever we can to make it as smooth, gentle and graceful of a transition as possible. 24 The Actual Crossing When animals cross and release their bodies in the physical world, they, like all living beings, are making a conscious intention to do so. When Kenya died, one of the teachers and healers we were working with taught me that there is no such thing as a suicide. This may be a challenging concept to accept, but really, all death is a choice, no matter who the living being is. Moreover, at this point in our evolution, our sacred contracts and agreements are such that we have a contract and at some point, it expires. Until that day, we are here so we may as well make the best of it. The same is true for our pets. The day before Kenya died, I asked her, Do you want to stay? I also said, Kenya, I want you to stay. But you have to decide for yourself. It is your life. You have to choose to stay. I will love and adore you no matter what. In my mind, I heard her say, Mommy, I want to stay, but I have to go. Once I gave her the choice, she knew she could leave. She died later that evening. When she crossed, we were in Maui, it was 3am, there was no available 24 hour vet and it was too late in the evening to do anything. I later learned that she did this on purpose, so I could not keep her body alive; she was too tired to continue in it. I was holding her in my arms. I had blue twinkle lights on in the room and candles lit. I was exhausted from nursing her for months and months, and I had very little strength to continue. I was crying, Please hold on. Please. 25 Suddenly, all of her bowels released. From the corner of my eye, I saw a white light into the room and at the same time, I saw more light leave her body and merge with the other light. At the same time, my other dog, Kiko, who was also in the room, stood up on all four legs and stared at the same white light as it moved gracefully through the room. Now here s the strange part: her body was still alive for a little longer after that. I cleaned her bowels. I hugged her and pet her and told her it was alright to go. I said, You re alright Kenya. I love you. I m here. I love you. Then, I heard her say, Mommy, go take a break. I m ok now. I actually thought that she might have been about to recover. I left the room for a few moments, drank some water and came back, and that was it. The life was gone from her. I stood over her body in complete and total shock. Here are some of the key factors you can know when an animal crosses: Non-physical light beings of light beings come in to assist with the crossing. The animal separates from the body but the body remains alive for a short time after that; the heart and lungs work for a short time after this transition. Energy is gathered; there is a short convulsion and their soul pops out of the body. The animal is greeted by benevolent light beings. They receive a deep feeling of support and comfort. 26 Below are some things you can do to assist any animal during his or her crossing: Listen to and honor the animal s soul blueprints during this time Honor and respect all parts of the circle of life. Remember that the body is part of a huge hologram or part of what appears to be real and actually is not. Know that the animal can easily get another body. Do your best to set them free in divine timing. They generally will not leave until we set them free they will hang on until we are ready to let them go, so when it is really time for them to go, allow them to do so as gracefully and gently as possible, and in the arms of love and compassion. Understand the benefits of viewing things in retrospect and that whatever lessons are meant to come from the experience will also come to pass. Moreover, in retrospect, things always look clearer. The animals also understand this. Play peaceful, calming music. Have dim lights on and/or lighted candles. Hold the animal calmly, releasing him or her in peace and stay grounded in your love for him or her; maintain your center and groundedness so that you can be fully present for the animal and allow him or her to have his or her experience. In some cases, they will request that you leave the room (as Kenya did) so they can let go fully. Research the use of plant based and homeopathic remedies, such as Arsenicum album, Carbo veg, Arnica, Kava kava, Valerian root, Bryonia, etc. to assist with the process. Know that the soul of the animal (humans as well) never actually experience pain; only the body experiences pain. When we realize that we are not separate from our soul, in the same way that the way the animals know this, we can also come to realize that there really is never any suffering and the experience of suffering is actually an illusion. 27 Where Their Souls Go When I was in Maui, I had the rare opportunity to leave my body and check into The Bliss Hotel, as I like to call it, on a number of occasions. I say this quite casually, but I mean it sincerely. It wasn t like your regular breathe and relax type of meditations. I was literally, from my perspective, somewhere between dead and alive. The peak of these experiences happened the week after Kenya s death when I literally wanted to check out and reconnect on some level with Kenya. I remember hearing her in my ear saying, It s alright momma. I m fine. You can come and visit for a little while. While the details of this experience could be explained in an entirely separate book, it is worthwhile to mention it here because those experiences are in large part responsible for my knowing what I am about to explain about where souls go. Beyond my own personal experiences both before and after Kenya s death, I also know these things to be true as a result of communicating with humans and animals, those still alive as well as those who have passed on who continue to connect and provide additional information about their unique experiences. 28 More than anything, I want to impart how challenging it is to put this kind of experience into words, because there simply are not many human words to explain such a experiences. However, to the best of my abilities, here s how I can explain it: There is a sensation of boundless freedom. There is a sensation of pure bliss, joy and caring, but not caring in the same way in the same way that we care in the physical world; it s more like caring with a detachment of knowing that everything will be just fine and there is nothing to worry about or fret over. It s not really a heaven in terms of a physical place, so to speak, but more of a heavenly type of experience, sort of like another dimension which exists in the here and now; an alternate dimension of a non physical reality. It s a place or experience of safety, peace and harmony where we all are reunited; but before we can get to that space, there are certain levels so to speak, which we must pass through, so to speak. Time and space as we know it is not real; what seems like two seconds may be hours of time in the human experience. There are light beings everywhere who are all loving and supportive and you can see and feel their presence. It is the same place that humans go, although it s not actually a place at all; more of a kind of experience. I never, in all of my wildest dreams ever expected to have this kind of experience. Before I moved to Maui in 2008, I never thought that any of this would happen to me. But it did. It is for these reasons, I can say first hand, that the information I am relaying to you here is real. 29 Are They Safe and Happy? In all of my experience of connecting with those who have passed on, be they human or animal, as well as my own personal experiences of leaving my own body, literally hanging out in other realms and experiencing my own body as somewhere between dead and alive, I can say this with complete certainty: they are happy. There is more love, joy, happiness and bliss in their energy field than we humans in the physical world could ever begin to imagine, and are just now beginning to wake up to. In fact, every time I ever left the bliss hotel, (in other words, came out of this in-between state), I was generally so over elated that I could not stop belly laughing for hours -- and I mean, real belly laughing to the point of muscle pain from the laughter. Moreover, in my experience and learning with and from many other animal communicators, as well as other professional psychic intuitives and mediums, as well as others who have had real life after death (or life after life ;) experiences, this information is further verified. In addition: The animals are safe, happy and completely in a loving, joyful, blissful state. They don t get stuck on the astral plane the way many humans do because they completely surrender to the physical death and don t try to hold on to their bodies or to their physical existence. Their wish is for their humans and all the beings of the world to live happily and joyfully, and with out worry, doubt, fear or anxiety. 30 The Grieving Process: Grief Release and Recovery After the crossing, the human grieving process can sometimes be so overwhelming that it often seems unbearable. From a true pet parent s perspective, losing a pet is no different from losing a human child and can in some situations be even more difficult because the pet parent is the primary caregiver; a pet child relies 100% on its parent for all of its needs. Moreover, the pet does not have a human voice to make sure its needs are met, so the responsibility to ensure this lies with the human. In addition, our society does not recognize pets as equals to humans and therefore the loss of a pet is not usually treated with the same kind of compassion, empathy and kindness that the loss of a human is treated with. I know this firsthand. When Kenya died, no one really understood the sacred bond she and I shared. Even my family judged me for being more affected by the loss of my pet, who I viewed as my child, than by the loss of my brother, who died over four years earlier and whom I credit with getting me on board with this ride when he first began connecting with me following his death. From my perspective, they were two completely different scenarios, and the love that I felt and continue to feel for each of the two individuals is immeasurable, and not based on their physical form or on society s ranking of who should be more important. In terms of Kenya s death, I was closer to my dog than I was to my brother. I also spent more time with her, so of course that death would impact me more intensely. 31 There are many things we can do to ease the grieving process and deal with the inevitable grief which can and does accompany the concept of separation after death. Some of these things include: Honor the journey and purpose of our animal teachers and guardians and respect them for what they taught us. See the process from the animals understanding, as explained in earlier chapters, rather than from the human s understanding. Recognize that while it often doesn t seem to be so at the time, there is dramatic healing happening even when it is not imminently evident (it becomes more evident in retrospect). See the experience for what it is: one of the greatest lessons which our animals teach us about what real love is: completely unselfish, giving, allowing everything and anything, non judgmental love. Seek out support from others who have experienced it; there are many pet grieving groups; in fact, I often offer them through efil s god, efil s god Dog Training and efil s god Spirit. Practice journaling and free writing to help release the sadness and the other associated emotions. Consider setting up memorials, alters or arranging other ceremonies to let them go, especially ceremonies to release them to their highest and best destiny which helps enormously; you can call in their higher selves and any and all light beings, who you trust to assist you, as well as your own higher power or God. Practice one of the most important and sacred lessons of all which we learn from the animals: forgiveness. Not only of others who may have been part of the experiences, but also of yourself. No matter what, you, as a pet parent, were doing the very best you could at that time. Your pet companion, as well as all of the other animals on this planet, knows this. So go gentle on yourself and forgive yourself for whatever transpired before, during and after the animal s crossing. Seek out professional help and counsel whenever necessary. 32 Forgiveness Forgiveness is an important process and worthy of mention in this ebook. I have no doubt that if you are reading this book or listening to the accompanying audio cd you understand the importance of forgiveness, and that it is not something we do for another, it is something we do for ourselves, so that we are free from the baggage of resentment and blame, and so we can go forward in our lives with more joy and happiness. In reality, forgiveness is a form of letting to of and releasing heavy, emotional and energetic baggage which is simply too burdensome to hold onto. However, when it comes to death, particularly of one who is so loved, such as our animal companions, forgiveness can often take on an entirely different meaning. It is often a question of forgiving ourselves. When Kenya passed, I spent a year blaming myself for not being strong enough to heal her, for not releasing all of my resentments about my ex-husband and our resulting divorce, for not caring for her (or me) in the way we both needed to be cared for, for not seeing and treating her illness sooner, for not protecting her from the very harm that was in our world at that time which ultimately led to her death, and for an endless list of list of couldas, wouldas, shouldas. Ultimately, this process of forgiveness was one of the many of the lessons she came to teach me. In the end, I had over a year of healing on myself to do to learn those lessons and absorb them on a cellular level, which I am not 100% certain I am completely finished with. What I do know for certain is this: Kenya chose to incarnate in her body, share those experiences with me and teach me those lessons and also to assist me awaken during perhaps the most challenging period of my entire life. 33 As a result, she has evolved as a soul -- an incredible, beautiful and magnificent soul to whom I am eternally grateful for having done that. What a tremendous gift to give! More than that, I am happy for her! Her soul got to evolve and move on and I had the magnificent opportunity to assist her in that process by being her student! And now, I get to share those gifts with you, so that they will further assist you in your journey of learning, growing and evolving. For all of those things, I am beyond grateful, and I know, she would not and does not want me to be in pain and sadness and self reproach. It is her greatest joy to see me in mine. This is how I reconcile, and I hope others will follow suit and benefit from this information. The weak are incapable of ever forgiving. 34 Reuniting and Reincarnation The process of reuniting and reincarnation is real. With animals, they tend to hang around in the non physical plane for somewhere around 7 to 10 days and then they will generally enter a new body. Humans generally take as many as 7 to 10 years before they come back to a new body in the physical world. This is because unlike humans, animals don t generally have a lot to process after they die. They live relatively simple lives, uncomplicated by resentments, angers, fears, frustrations, etc., so they have a lot less to work through before taking on a new body with new agreements and contracts. Now here s the really fascinating part about animals. Animals will often do what s called, walk-in. A walk in is when an animal who has crossed borrows the body of another living being (usually another animal) to temporarily walk into that living being s body to complete its physical experience, or to check in on his or her human. After Kenya crossed, there were several distinct times when I knew that she had walked-in to Kiko s body so she could have a human experience again and let me know that she was indeed, just fine. In those moments, I realized why I kept Kiko; during our experience together, I had actually intended to find Kiko another home right from the beginning, and somehow, I never could. I now understand why, and I know that Kiko and Kenya had a divine agreement which allowed Kenya to come back and visit a few times before officially moving on. 35 Even beyond that, there is always opportunity to reconnect with signs from the other side. For example, when Kenya passed away, I had a purple lilly in my bedroom; in fact, I always had purple flowers in our home. Months later, when I arrived back in Los Angeles after leaving Maui, I asked Kenya to provide me with some confirmation that she was still with me -- I wasn t ready for her to move on yet, and I knew that it was part of her agreement to stay with me until I was completely ready to let her go. That very day, I was walking down the street with Kiko and Dakota (Dakota is my other dogster ;) and there in front of us, was a purple lilly, which is kind of a not so common occurrence to see on the street in Los Angeles. As we continued to walk, I noticed houses and houses lined with purple flowers...and more lilly flowers too. In those moments, I knew that Kenya was still with me and this was her way of answering my request. I have story after story after story like this which further provides evidence to me that animals (and humans) can and do continue to stay connected to us even after they cross. The significant information about reincarnation is this: the same soul comes back over and over again to continually improve upon and experience new and different lessons, until all the lessons are complete. 36 Fulfilling Higher Duties and Purposes We are all here fulfilling higher duties and purposes, and the animals in this world are no exception. In most cases, we don t realize the higher duties and purposes we are all intended to fulfill on this planet. Those duties and purposes generally have something to do with our soul s evolution and the assistance with the evolution of other souls as well as the planet. Our animals are certainly doing just that. In light of that, I often remember and recite the following prayer, which is among my favorites: Prayer of St. Francis: A Prayer for Peace Lord, make me an instrument of Thy Peace where there is hatred, let me sew love; where there is injury, let me sew pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy; O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love; for it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life. 38 Within the year and a half after I made that request to The Universe, I had: Completely rid myself of all pharmaceutical drugs, tobacco and alcohol (and trust me on this, I was excessively using these products!) Completely transformed my food diet into almost exclusively all natural, mostly organic, mostly raw, vegetarian based eating. Let go of 65 pounds of weight which I was carrying around (and kept it off too!) Eliminated over $100,000 in bad debt. Removed myself from the unhealthy relationships of my past, including but not limited to previous friends who were not sincere friends, past employers and an ex-husband who were not able to see the true love, joy and happiness which exists everywhere, in everyone (including me!) and established new, healthy and fulfilling relationships. Radically transformed my thoughts, beliefs, ideologies and knowing, essentially re-programming my brain and my body for a new and higher level of experience, so that I am able to give and receive love, kindness, compassion, forgiveness, laugher and joy in ways I never knew possible. Started a new and prospering business with no money whatsoever. And I did all of this in the face of my own disease, divorce, relocation, job change and the death of my most loved pet, companion and (for me, my) child, Kenya. You can do this and more too!
