1 a selection from: The Living Divine Person Confesses That He Is Here An Introduction to Aham Da Asmi (Beloved, I Am Da) by Jonathan Condit, Ph.D. Aham Da Asmi (Beloved, I Am Da) is the most extraordinary statement ever made in human history. In this sacred Text, Avatar Adi Da Samraj Reveals Himself as the Living Divine Person Proclaiming His Infinite and Undying Love for all, and Offering the Way by which Absolute Oneness with Him may be Realized. Avatar Adi Da speaks His Great Confession in the ancient language of Sanskrit: "Aham Da Asmi" ("I Am Da"). In making this Confession, Adi Da Samraj is Revealing that He is the Unspeakable Divine Itself Which can be described (in human language) as Reality, or Truth, or Real God. And He is the Divine not in some abstract or "distant" sense, but Appearing here on Earth as Avatar in a human Form, by Which He can directly Communicate with, and directly Bless, living beings. Avatar Adi Da (Himself) Is Eternally Above and Beyond. However, by means of His Avataric Incarnation here, He has Descended into the conditional worlds, "Filling" His Avatarically-Born bodily (human) Form with His Divine Consciousness and Radiance in order to most potently establish His Eternal Divine Help, Blessing, and Transcendental Spiritual Transmission in the realms of manifestation. Indeed, Avatar Adi Da's Primal Divine Self-Confession "I Am Da" directly conveys His Purpose in Incarnating on Earth: to Give His Gift of Divine Liberation truly, to Give the Gift of Himself to all who are moved to respond to Him in the timehonored devotional manner. His very Name "Da" means "the Divine Giver", or "the One Who Gives". And (as He expresses by Addressing everyone as "Beloved") He Offers His supremely precious Divine Gifts out of His overwhelming Love for all beings. "Da" Is the "Bright" and the "Thumbs" By His own Confession, Avatar Adi Da has, from the moment of His Birth, been Self-Aware as an infinite Sphere of Radiant Sublimity even while functioning in and as a human body. As soon as He acquired the use of language, He gave His own Divine State a simple yet powerfully expressive name the "Bright". At the same early age, He also gave a name to His Divine Function the Function of Transmitting Himself, as the "Bright", from His Divine Self-Domain into the cosmic domain. He called this Divine Transmission-Function the "Thumbs" because, when His Love-Blissful Spirit-Force enters the human body (Descending through the head and throat and down into the entire body), It feels (as He has described) like "a gigantic mass of thumbs". These two words the "Bright" and the "Thumbs" are Avatar Adi Da's "Childhood Teachings". And the "Bright" and the "Thumbs" are His Eternal Avataric Divine Self-Revelation to all uniquely Revealed by Him (and never before fully known, 1

2 in the history of the human religious and Spiritual search). That Teaching and that Revelation have never changed. Even since His infancy, that Teaching and that Revelation have always remained the same. Such is His Divine Nature as the Ruchira Avatar the Descent of the Divine "Brightness" into a human body, Radiating His own Divinely Enlightened Condition from the moment of Birth. This supreme profundity the simultaneous reality of Avatar Adi Da's Divine Self-Condition (the "Bright") and His Divine Transmission-Function (the "Thumbs") is mysteriously (and non-conceptually) communicated via the single Divine Word-Sign "Da". "Da" is "the One Who Gives" the Divine One Who Is the "Bright" Itself, and Who Gives (or Transmits) His own "Brightness" by means of the "Thumbs". Thus, by means of His Great Confession "Aham Da Asmi I Am Da", Avatar Adi Da Samraj is making a vast Communication about His own Divine Nature and Purpose. Implicit in the single Divine Syllable "Da" is His Complete Avataric Divine Self- Revelation: I Am (Eternally) The Divine Acausal Source and Person I Have Avatarically Self-Realized. I Am (Eternally) The Divine Acausal Source and Person I (Now, and Forever Hereafter) Avatarically Self-Reveal. I Am (Eternally) The Divine Acausal Source and Person That Is My Avataric Self-Revelation To all-and-all. Aham Da Asmi. Beloved, I Am Da. I Am (Eternally) The One and Only Divine Acausal Source (or Source-Condition) and Person (or Indivisible Self-Condition) Of all-and-all. Therefore, I Am Divinely Self-Named As "Da", The "Divine Giver" 2

3 The Acausal Divine Source and Person, That Is Eternally Self-Existing (Prior To all-and-all), and That Is Eternally Self-Aware (As Consciousness Itself), and That Is Eternally Self-Radiant (As Indestructible Light), and That Is Eternally Full and "Bright" (As Love-Bliss), and That Only Gives Itself (To all-and-all), and That (Now, and Forever Hereafter) Is Divinely Avatarically Self-"Emerging" (Most Perfectly, Non-"Differently", and Universally) To, and In, and (Ultimately) As all-and-all. "Aham Da Asmi", from verses 3-7 (presented in poetic format) The Divine Mahavakya Avatar Adi Da's Declaration "Aham Da Asmi" is what is known in the Indian tradition as a "Mahavakya", or "Great Statement". Four such Mahavakyas are found in the Upanishads (the scriptures that preserve the esoteric Teachings of ancient Indian Realizers). The most famous is "Tat tvam asi" ("That thou art", or "You are That" in other words, there is, ultimately, no "difference" between the subjective "person", or "you", and the Divine Reality, referred to in Upanishadic language simply as "That"). The traditional Mahavakya most similar in form to Avatar Adi Da's Great Statement is "Aham Brahmasmi" ("I am Brahman", or "I am the Divine Reality"). However, although similar in form and succinctness to the traditional Mahavakyas, "Aham Da Asmi" is fundamentally different in its import. Each of the Upanishadic Mahavakyas expresses, in a few words, the profound Realization achieved by great Realizers of the past. For example, "Aham Brahmasmi" expresses a great individual's Realization that he or she is Identified with the Divine Reality (Brahman), and is not, in Truth, identified with his or her apparently individual body-mind. In contrast, "Aham Da Asmi", rather than being a proclamation of a human being who has devoted his or her life most intensively to the process of Real-God-Realization and has thereby Realized the Truth to an extraordinarily profound degree, is Avatar Adi Da's Confession that He Is the Very Divine Person, Da, Who has Appeared here in His Avatarically-Born bodily (human) Divine Form, in order to Reveal Himself to all-and- All, for the sake of the Divine Liberation of all-and-all. Thus, "Aham Da Asmi" is the Divine Mahavakya the Self-Revelatory Great Statement Uttered by the Divine Person. 3

4 The Revelation of "Da" The Divine Mahavakya "I Am Da" was implicitly Proclaimed to the world by the Event of Avatar Adi Da's Birth (on November 3, 1939). But it was not Revealed in words until nearly 40 years later. Avatar Adi Da's parents had given Him the name "Franklin Jones" and it was this name by which He was known throughout His first three decades and more. Even after He formally began to Teach (in April 1972), He did not, at first, expect any formality of address from His devotees. Rather, acknowledging their lack of preparation for real Spiritual life (and the general lack of understanding of true Spiritual hierarchy in the egalitarian culture of the West), He simply continued to be known as "Franklin". However, in mid-1973, having been Teaching for somewhat more than a year, His relationship to His devotees had reached the point that it was appropriate for them to adopt a more formal mode of address. Thus, He instructed His devotees to call Him by the more formal (though still rather informal) Name "Bubba Free John" "Bubba" being a childhood nickname (meaning "brother" or "friend"), and "Free John" being a rendering of "Franklin Jones". All the while that He was being called "Franklin", and then "Bubba Free John", by His devotees, Avatar Adi Da was aware of His true Divine Name, "Da". But He could not Reveal that Name until His devotees had become sufficiently founded in the devotional relationship to Him. Only with that foundation would they be able to rightly receive the Name "Da" as a Revelation of His Divine Nature. The moment for that Revelation finally arrived on September 13, That afternoon, Avatar Adi Da Samraj was sitting with a small group of devotees (in His residence at the Mountain Of Attention Sanctuary in northern California), when He unexpectedly asked them to leave the room so that He could write in privacy. As He put His pen to paper, the first words He wrote were His Great Divine Self-Confession, "Beloved, I Am Da." He was writing a letter to all of His devotees, and to all beings a letter that opened with His Divine Mahavakya. He had finally brought His devotees to a point of sufficient maturity that He could now fully and freely Reveal Himself as the Very Divine Person Incarnate, Da, "the One Who Gives": Beloved, I Am Da, the Living Person, Who is Manifest as all worlds and forms and beings, and Who is Present as the Transcendental Current of Life in the body of Man.... To Realize Me is to Transcend the body-mind in Ecstasy. To Worship Me is simply to Remember My Name and Surrender Into My Eternal Current of Life. And those who Recognize and Worship Me As Truth, the Living and All-Pervading One, will be Granted the Vision (or Love-Intuition) of My Eternal Condition. They will be Filled and Transfigured by My Radiant Presence. Even the body-mind and the whole world will be Shining with My Life-Light if I am Loved. And My devotee will easily be sifted out from the body-mind and all the limits of the world itself at last. Only Love Me, Remember Me, have Faith in Me, and Trust Me. Surrender to Me. Breathe Me and Feel Me in all your parts. 4

5 I am here.... I will dissolve all your bewilderment. Even now you inhere in Me, beyond the body-mind and the world. Do not be afraid. Do not be confused. Observe My Play and My Victory.... I Am Joy, and the Reason for It.... Now be Happy. Tell every one that I am here. Beloved, I do not lie. This is the Final Truth. I Love you. My devotee is the God I have Come to Serve. Copies of the letter (reproduced in Avatar Adi Da's own handwriting) were immediately prepared, to be distributed to His devotees at a momentous occasion that was to take place three days later (on September 16, 1979). Those who were present will forever remember that occasion as one of the most powerful, prophetic moments in Avatar Adi Da's Work. Nearly seven hundred people (many of whom had never seen Avatar Adi Da before) had gathered to celebrate the ninth anniversary of His Divine Re- Awakening (in September 1970). The moment Avatar Adi Da strode into view, dressed in ceremonial white clothing, His Transmission of Love-Bliss engulfed the gathering in waves of profound feeling. Gasps rolled through the gathering and, by the time He took His seat, many people were weeping uncontrollably. Everything was overshadowed by Avatar Adi Da's overwhelming Communication of Divine Love. After sitting for a time in silence, Avatar Adi Da began to speak. He spoke slowly, with great force and emphasis, summarizing His entire Revelation to that point in time. When He came to describe the significance of the Great Event of His Divine Re- Awakening (the anniversary of which was being celebrated that day), He made an epochal Divine Pronouncement, addressed to all humankind (past, present, and future): AVATAR ADI DA SAMRAJ: My Divine Re-Awakening was an Eternal Event, an Incident that continues. Because of that Great Event, all the Scriptures are now Fulfilled in your sight, and your prayers are answered with a Clear Voice. He then went on to Call all those present to seriously embrace the life of devotional resort to Him recognizing Him at heart as the Incarnate Divine Person, the Divine Giver of Most Perfect Liberation. For years, I have Called upon you to understand your experience, to understand the limited offerings of the world. All of its offerings both its lower offerings, its lifestimulation in the body, and its religious offerings, its esoteric offerings, its lifestimulation in the mind. And, still, you have not understood. Therefore, My Teaching Word is, in and of Itself, not sufficient. My Teaching Argument is not sufficient. I, Myself, Am Sufficient. "Radical" understanding requires a great mind, a great heart. But you will not realize it through mere "consideration". You have all failed to do that and that is good, if you will feel the failure to be transformed utterly through mere "consideration". Then, perhaps, you will be able to accept what I Offer to you. 5

6 It is not through insight alone that any one Realizes Real God, that any one becomes Happy and Free anymore than it is through any form of bodily or mental or psychic experience that any one becomes Happy and Free. But it is sufficient sadhana to Remember Me, to simply surrender to Me and love Me and trust Me, and to always do what I ask you to do. It is not only sufficient there is no way that you will be Saved, that you will be Awakened, that you will be Happy, except through this simple turning to Me. You must also give up your struggling. You must transcend yourself, your experience, your attachment to all of your former teachers and their teachings, to all your moments, accumulations, and thoughts as I did during My "Sadhana Years". You are mortal and entirely subject to the Mercy of Real God. You own nothing, and you know nothing. And there is no technique of meditation that leads to Real God. There is not anything to be believed that is the Truth Itself. You must be touched in your feeling by the unspeakable suffering of this world and return everything to Me.... I see what is to come in your case, and it will make you fearful, sorrowful, and angry. It will always return you to doubt and to yourself alone. And I see that what you require is the Help of Real God. Recently, I was telling some who were with Me, "You are all going to the chair! You are all going to die. I have looked into it, I have examined your case, and I have made all of the appeals that are to be made. And I am afraid that you're going to go to the chair, and that's all there is to it." And then I said, "A person in your position really has no appeals left, no strategy, no game with which to be integrated, whereby you might be Saved. There is no meditation, no mere belief, no consolation, no experience sufficient for your Salvation, your Happiness, your Eternal Life. You are going to the chair. You are going to die. All you could do would be to ask for mercy, pray for help." Those who heard Me say this went home for a couple of days and began to scream their brains out, weeping in the Communion Hall, begging God for mercy. And then I called them back, and I pointed out to them that, just as they were neurotics egopossessed individuals before I told them they had no appeals left, now they also prayed like neurotics. Their prayer itself was neurotic. Their prayer itself was ego-possessed. [Adi Da suddenly leans backwards, stretching His arms wide and making a very loud and dramatic noise of weeping.] "I can't! Help me! Ahhhh!" [Laughter.] There is something amusing about that but they felt it very profoundly, you see. They all felt they were Yogis, they all felt they were understanding, and so forth, you know? But, even so, it was still clear to them, in their feeling, that their life itself and everything it contained would come to an end, that all their relations would be taken from them, and that they exist here in this place utterly at the Mercy of That in Which the cosmic domain is arising. You have not brought yourselves into existence. You do not now maintain yourselves alive. But to suddenly feel your vulnerability and beg to be kept alive is to be no more Enlightened than in that casual moment before, in which you did not realize your dependency. The frightened wailing for God's Help is no more surrendered than your self-indulgent, ego-possessed life. It is another moment of the failure to surrender to Me. 6

7 There is another form of prayer, then, that represents your dependency on Real God, but which is not itself an ego-possessed gesture, a search for mere survival, consolation, self-contentment. And that is surrender itself, giving up to Real God simply, without exaggeration, and returning to your Ease not of self-contentment but of heart-release, in which body and mind are relaxed into the All-Pervading Current of Spirit-Life upon Which your very existence depends. Why, then, continue that path that leads to death? Why go to the chair? Why go to death, the empty place? [Adi Da speaks softly now, pointing with His index finger to the chair He is sitting on.] Come to this chair. As He approached the end of His Discourse, Avatar Adi Da Samraj voiced His Divine Name "Da" for all to hear for the first time. I do not speak as an ordinary man to you. Nor would I ever suggest that you do what I ask you to do merely because of some whim or other of Mine. But it has been Granted to Me to accept devotees through surrender to Me. It is not a thing that an ordinary person may presume. I have Tested it all My Life, and I have Tested it in your company.... If you will surrender to Me, if you will love and trust Me because you recognize Who I Am, if you will simply accept the discipline of My Demands, simply do what I ask you to do (and I will always make it very plain), if you will Remember Me with love, if you will Call upon Me by Name with your feeling breaths, if you will Call upon Me by the Name "Da", then this will be sufficient.... If you will do this, then you can enter My Way,... and you will be Given every strength and all the Spirit-Blessing of Real God any one who does this. The developmental stages of the Way in My Company will accomplish themselves, and you need have no concern for it. Your single obligation is at the heart. It is in your feeling that you become ego-possessed. It is in your feeling that you betray the Real and Ever-Living God and all your relations. It is in your feeling that you are unhappy. It is in your feeling that fear, sorrow, anger, doubt, shame, lust, and all egoic obsessions are arising. Therefore, it is in your feeling alone that you will be healed. The Way in My Company is Happy. It is boundlessly Joyful. It is a difficult process in this place, this world difficult in terms of what you must endure, what you must creatively struggle with, as a matter of ordinary discipline. People are difficult. People are crazy, driven mad by mortality and pleasure.... But if you will transcend the petty reactions of your mortal psyche through surrender to Me, and simply accept the discipline of obedience to Me and Remembrance of Me, then you will be made Happy by My Divine Avataric Grace. On another occasion, I will be moved to laugh with you more than today and to be more casually pleasant with you. But today I want you to feel this profundity. 7

8 Having made His full Confession and Call, He ended with a penetrating question: Now that you have seen Me, what will you do? Directly after asking this question, Avatar Adi Da dipped His hands several times into a bowl of water at His side and, in a dramatic gesture of Blessing, threw drops of water over the copies of His "I Am Da" letter which were to be distributed as His gift to everyone present. Once again, devotees gasped as waves of His Love-Bliss poured over the entire gathering. (Many people had not stopped weeping since the occasion began.) Then Avatar Adi Da turned to everyone again, and said, "I will be waiting for your answer." Everyone bowed, as Avatar Adi Da Samraj rose from His chair, took His staff, and walked back to His house. The Divine Vision and the Divine Name: Devotee Accounts of September 16, 1979 Many devotees wrote letters to Avatar Adi Da expressing their response to His Avataric Divine Self-Revelation of September 16, Presented here are excerpts from two such letters. Beloved Da, You Are the Vision of God I have seen the Vision, and I am completely broken by It. How can I describe the feeling of seeing You sitting there and allowing all of us to pass through You to Infinity? I would so like to describe this undoing that occurs in Your Company, so that very ordinary people like myself would learn of the Grace of Your Presence. The response that I felt today completely surpassed any response I have ever had in the past to Your Company and the joy at the Sight of You. And, yet, it was exactly the same response that I had the first time I was Graced with the Sight of You five years ago. I became completely Happy in my heart. I had found my heart's desire, and it was completely inexplicable. My Lord, You Are the Sweetness and the Light. I pray to love You and all Your devotees and all beings with the same passionate intensity of love that I felt today in Your physical Company because, without a doubt, You Are God Incarnate. I bow at Your Holy Feet. I love You, Cathy Lewis Beloved Da, You Are the Ocean of Grace. I bow down to You again and again. 8

9 This weekend when we sat with You, I felt more love, more joy, more complete abandonment to the Happiness of God than ever before in my life. The Divine Person was obviously and exquisitely beyond all doubting Radiant as Your own Form. Seeing You thus is the greatest Gift of my life. I treasure it above all else, and I prostrate myself in thanks that, in the mystery of changes that is this life, I have been shown the way to love and serve You. I love You with all my heart and mind and body, Meg McDonnell Another devotee wrote a testimony of the Spiritual Power he felt in the newly Revealed Name "Da": The Day of the Heart Celebration marked a profound change in my feeling and practice of this Way. My heart literally opened when I saw the Spiritual Master, and I still see Him and feel His Presence in and pervading this body. I feel His Love for me so strongly and His Argument so plainly. But I think what has been the strongest sense of this time is His Name "Da". I do not know what it is about the word "Da", but it has incredible power for me. As I remember Him via the Name "Da" during the events of daily life, I find a profound opening and surrender taking place. There is a natural worship of the Unspeakable God hidden in that sound. Every time I use It, It distracts me from whatever I am otherwise concerned with. Malcolm Burke Each person present at this extraordinary occasion walked away from it holding a copy of Avatar Adi Da's "Beloved, I Am Da" letter. In that letter, He had made His primary Statement of Self-Revelation as the Avatarically Incarnate Divine Person. In subsequent years, Avatar Adi Da continued to refine and expand the text of the original letter making it ever fuller and more complete, and greatly extending its length. Eventually, in 1984, He designated the elaborated form of the letter as the first chapter of one of His primary "Source-Texts", The Dawn Horse Testament Of The Ruchira Avatar. And, then, in 1997, He also designated that same text to be the core of this book of His Divine Self-Confession, Aham Da Asmi (Beloved, I Am Da). The Secrets of the Divine Name Although the Divine Name "Da" was not fully Revealed as such until the brilliant afternoon of September 16, 1979, there have been intuitions of its profound significance stretching back thousands of years. The oldest (and, perhaps, most significant) recorded reference to "Da" in the literature of the Great Tradition is found in the Brhadaranyaka Upanishad the "Great 'Forest-Treatise' Upanishad" which is the oldest and largest among the Upanishads. In this Upanishad, there is an allegory in which the Divine Being instructs all of his students who include three very different classes of beings (gods, men, and demons) by uttering the single syllable "Da". Each class of beings understands "Da" differently in a manner that gives them instruction in how to 9

10 overcome their characteristic fault. The Upanishad concludes this passage by remarking that "Da" is the "heavenly voice of thunder", which always gives the same Divine instruction. Thus, this ancient Indian scripture identifies "Da" as the primal Divine Sound that instructs all. As Avatar Adi Da has Revealed, "Da" is, indeed, the primal Divine Sound and that Divine Sound is the Sound of Him. At the same time, "Da" is, mysteriously, not different from the anciently revered Divine Sound "Om": "Om" Is Me. "Om" Is "Da-Sound". "Da-Sound" Is "Om". I Am "Da-Sound". I Am "Om". I Am That. Avatar Adi Da Samraj, He-and-She Is Me The Inherent and Universal (or Cosmic) "Om" (or "Da-Om", or "Da") Sound... [Is]... The Primal, Single, Profound, Uninterrupted, and Indivisible Droning Cosmic Background Sound, or Source-Sound.... That Mass Of Divine Sound (Eternally Established In, and Pouring From, The Eternal "Bright" Silence, or The Un-Speakable Word Of Heart) Is The Sound Of Me (here, and every "where" In The Cosmic Domain). Avatar Adi Da Samraj He-and-She Is Me Thus, the Divine Name "Da" conveys the full Mystery and Greatness of the Divine Avataric Appearance of Adi Da Samraj in the cosmic midst. "Da" is the Name of His humanly-appearing Form on Earth. It is through this Form that He directly Communicates (and will, even after His physical Lifetime, eternally so Communicate) His Instruction and His Transcendental Spiritual Transmission to earthly beings. And It is this Form Which is forever regarded by His earthly devotees even when they are Awakened, by His Divine Avataric Transcendental Spiritual Grace, to Divine Enlightenment, or Perfect (and Inherently egoless) Oneness with Him. At the same time, "Da" is the "Cosmic Background Sound, or Source-Sound" the Fundamental Divine Sound underlying the cosmos, the cosmically manifested Sound of the Omnipresent Divine Person, Da. Indeed, one of Avatar Adi Da's most astounding Secrets is the Revelation of His three Primal Forms of Manifestation within the cosmic domain: the Divine Sound-Vibration (the objective Sign of the Divine "He", or the Divine Consciousness), the Divine Star (the objective Sign of the Divine "She", or the Divine Light), and the "Total Divine Spiritual Body" "The Re-Union (or The Resolution Of The Mutual Sacrifice) Of The Divine Pair (Of Consciousness and Light)". 10

11 The Name "Da" Indicates (or Points To) "The One Who Gives" (and Who Is The Gift Itself). It Refers To My Avatarically Self-Revealed Person Of Divine Grace, The Generous and Excessive Help That Is everywhere Available (By Means Of My Avatarically Self-Transmitted Given and Giving Divine Grace) To conditionally Manifested beings. As Such, I Am conditionally Manifested (First) As The everywhere Apparently Audible (and Apparently Objective) Divine Sound-Vibration (or "Da" Sound, or "Da-Om" Sound, or "Om" Sound, The Objective Sign Of The He, Present As The Conscious Sound Of sounds, In The Center Of The Cosmic Mandala), and As The everywhere Apparently Visible (and Apparently Objective) Divine Star (The Objective Sign Of The She, Present As The Conscious Light Of lights, In The Center Of The Cosmic Mandala), and (From That He and She) As The everywhere Apparently Touchable (or Tangible), and Apparently Objective, Total Divine Spiritual Body (The Objective, and all-and-all-surrounding, and all-and-all-pervading Conscious and Inherently egoless Me-Personal Body Of Spiritually "Bright" Love-Bliss-Presence, Divinely Self- "Emerging", Now, and Forever Hereafter, Descending From The Center Of The Cosmic Mandala Into The Depths Of Even every "where" In The Cosmic Domain) and, Most Prior To The Divine Sound and The Divine Star and The Total Divine Spiritual Body, I Am The "Bright" Itself (The Always Already Present, or Self-Existing and Self-Radiant, Divine Person and Infinite Spherical Self-Domain Of Conscious Light). Avatar Adi Da Samraj He-and-She Is Me Such is the Miraculous and Graceful Nature of the Divine Being Who is Speaking to you in Aham Da Asmi (Beloved, I Am Da).
