Atticus, characterized as a courageous and wellrespected leader, is given the task of defending Tom Robinson. EXPAND/CONNECT: When he is put in the middle of this controversial case, his character is tested. Motivated by a sense of justice and a desire to serve as a role model for his children, he aims to defend Tom Robinson with all of his might. EXPAND/CONNECT: Even though this is difficult for him, Atticus never loses sight of his goal revealing his integrity and commitment. His decision to do the right thing proves troublesome for him, and he and his family face several conflicts as a result. For example...expand/connect: As the lens states, a person's true character is revealed during times of "challenge and controversy." For Atticus, the trial serves as the biggest test of his life and proves what an upstanding and virtuous person he is. 15
