15 Close Reading A Model of Christian Charity Therefore let us choose life, that we and our seed may live, by obeying His voice and cleaving to Him, for He is our life and our prosperity. HALE, continuing to Elizabeth: Let you not mistake your duty as I mistook my own. I came into this village like a bridegroom to his beloved, bearing gifts of high religion; the very crowns of holy law I brought, and what I touched with my bright confidence, it died; and where I turned the eye of my great faith, blood flowed up. Beware, Goody Proctor cleave to no faith when faith brings blood. It is mistaken law that leads you to sacrifice. Life, woman, life is God s most precious gift; no principle, however glorious, may justify the taking of it. I beg you, woman, prevail upon your husband to confess. Let him give his lie. Quail not before God s judgment in this, for it may well be God damns a liar less than he that throws his life away for pride. Will you plead with him? I cannot think he will listen to another. (Miller 132)

16 Reading Act 4 Pg

17 Imagine you re in a situation like those accused of witchcraft in Salem. Warm-Up 9/18/18 What would make you willing to lie? How bad would the punishment need to be? You have to confess to evil deeds, get your reputation totally ruined, and put blame on other friends and neighbors, knowing they are probably innocent too. But you get to avoid punishment and walk away free. If it came down to life or death, would you sell out other people to save yourself?

18 Coming to Terms Who benefitted from John Proctor accepting his execution? Did he learn anything from it? What did he decide about himself in the final scene? How might it help the town? Who was hurt by Proctor being executed? What would he have done if he had lived? What about Elizabeth and his family? How will the town feel? What might it do to public opinion? Ultimately, do you think he did the right thing by refusing to confess?
