JOMUN JOURNAL Words Of Wisdom from the Secretary General By: Claire Pettit Why did you want to become Secretary General? My passion for international relations and my want to work with the actual UN or some international governing body lead me to become SG. I also wanted to become SG this year especially in order to provide my insight and my experience in order to ensure that the JOMUN would happen this year. What has been your greatest challenge in preparing for the conference? Helping the new delegates being fully aware of what work they have to do and how the actual conference works, e.g. merging and lobbying etc. What do you spend your time doing during JOMUN? I go from committees to committees making sure everything is in order. I keep in constant communication with Ms. Spicer and the DSG, Bonolo. I read the emergency situation to the Security Council. I provide any assistance to chairs when they need it. I make sure that the UN charter or country s individual s sovereign rights are not infringed upon What is a piece of advice you would give to a new JOMUN delegate? Do your research! Don t be afraid to ask the chairs for help prior and during the conference. Don t be afraid to speak, once you overcome your fear of public speaking, you ll improve much quicker. Finally do not be afraid to associate yourself with more experienced delegates because I am sure you can learn a lot from them. What will you take away from this experience? I will remember everything, from the opening ceremony to the closing. I will remember the excitement when the crisis situation arrived in Security Council. I will remember the stress I had before giving my opening speech. What was your favorite moment from the conference? I really enjoyed the keynote speaker on Saturday because I thought It was brilliant to hear from someone who has actually lived the events that we read and watch on the news everyday. How do you think the conference has gone overall? I think it has gone great considering the late start that we had. There is a lot to improve for next year but I hope everyone had a great time. Thank you Maxime for all your hard work! You have made this conference an amazing experience for all. Volume X, Issue 3 September 30th
Page 2 JOMUN JOMUN Survival Tips By: Cecilia Godoy Yeah, you did it! You survived JOMUN! You were able to cope with 3 days on intense discussion with people who had never met before and trying you convince them why you are right. Well, as JOMUN is coming to an end, our delegates have done an incredibly great job in debating and passing resolutions. Although most of our delegates have done an exceedingly good job, others were caught a bit off guard with the whole JOMUN situation. So, here are a few tips for next year s conference, in case you want to repeat the experience with a bit more of success. Fist, get a good night sleep the night before. You will never be able to keep up with a debate if your sleeping through it so, word of advise, sleep at home! Secondly, make sure not to drink too much water during the break, or if you do make sure to go the bathroom during breaks, because trust me, you wont be able to concentrate with a full bladder. Next, make sure to have big breakfast in the morning, cause it s scientifically proven to help you concentrate. Make sure to ask a lot of questions during the debates. If you don't, you will probably get called on a subject you have no opinions on, so its best to speak on something you know then to be called on something you have no idea. The next one is especially for the girls: although it s tempting to wear high heels, try to stick with flats as much as possible. Another thing, if International Court of Justice: By: Gonzalo Etchart you feel tempted to fall asleep, you might want to start on the chewing gum habit. Other than not letting you fall asleep, studies show that chewing gum actually helps you concentrate, who knew? Drink lots of coffee in the morning said the Deputy Secretary Bonolo Ntatleng. Lastly, make sure to know your facts! One of the reasons why the other delegates did so well is because they have been preparing for months before the conference. If you have prepared all of your papers and made as much research as possible, you re sure to be fine. We have heard those tips our entire lives from our teachers and parents - it is now time to follow them. By following these tips and having a positive and professional attitude you will be more than successful in the next JOMUN conference. See you next year! I felt outlandish, secluded. A mere outsider sitting smugly behind my laptop in a room filled with composed advocates and justices alike. All eyes gazed upon the advocate for Croatia as he made his closing remarks on the case, only to be followed by the defendant of Serbia. My lack of knowledge on the appeals made, and the tearing of copious pieces of evidence can momentously describe my observations in the International Court of Justice. But even for the unacquainted bystander, the Courtroom invoked a sense of questioning and assertion. The past two days consisted of the persistent rebuttal between advocates and the presenting of evidence, a process almost entirely composed of the presence of applicants and defendants. However today s proceedings would hold something very different. Justices now had to make a decision on the evidence and arguments given, a procedure that begins with the discarding of evidence. Documents were judged on the basis of relevance versus reliability. After being witness to the literal tearing of papers deemed unworthy I listened to the Justices as they stated their views on whether or not the Geneva Genocide Convention was broken. I patiently waited outside the Courtroom along with the advocates and admin staff who were asked to leave during the deliberation process. And while my greatest stress lied upon finding the closest refreshment table, advocates worried themselves with having their deliberations rejected, by a more than capable board of Justices.
Volume X, Issue 3 Page 3 Directors Insight By: Raquel Wilson Oftentimes, many people forget about the teachers in a student run conference. This article depicts the views of the Directors of this JOMUN conference and their take on how well the students have discussed issues concerning peace and human security in Africa. The director of Secretariat, Mrs. Slattery, has graced us with her opinion of the conference. When asked if she liked the idea of students running the conference she said, Absolutely, I think it s sensational! A really good chance for you guys to show leadership. Everyone has done such a great job, I m so impressed! She also says, I ve been so impressed with everyone s level of knowledge and how serious everyone is as well as the wonderful ideas that will provide for ECOSOC By: Gabby Pires ECOSOC started with a debate on an amendment to licence of distribution of clean water. After an arduous debate and thoughtful insight, the amendment failed. As the negotiations regarding the protection and distribution of water resources of African resources continued, Ibrahim Rashid could not contain his needs: Speaking of water, can the delegate of Germany please be excused to go to the bathroom? After the highly important concern was resolved, ECOSOC continued to discuss issues concerning a better future. Another Director, Mr. Mcglothlin gave his input on the conference as well. When asked how well he thought the students were debating he said, I think you can tell who was prepared and who wasn t prepared. The prepared delegates did a wonderful job. He said his favorite committee to watch was, ICJ because they are always well prepared, they think a lot about the issue. Mrs. Murgue, another director says if she were a student protection and distribution of water and failed four amendments, refining the resolution. Meanwhile, the delegates of Australia and Ireland were taking part in their own personal discussion, causing the whole committee to lose note passing privileges. In order to keep its fame for embarrassing people, the note has been published in this newsletter, together with other inappropriate notes on the last page of the issue. ECOSOC, on the other hand, maintaining its fame for chaos, noticed the disappearance of the delegate of Paki- delegate she would enjoy being in the Human Rights committee because I find their topics very interesting and important. I also read a lot of child soldier s books, so the topic is close to my heart. Her favorite part of JOMUN is watching students debate and say their points of view. She enjoys their formal setting and how the students have to abide by the protocol. The chairs know what they are doing! Zwe is an especially good chair, he knows what he is doing. Overall, it seems as though the Directors are thoroughly impressed with the delegate s professionalism and knowledge of the works they are debating about. Well done delegates! stan while on the process of voting. The committee went into a short break of one minute, and after the delegate had not returned a suggestion was made: The delegate [of Russia] suggests that as a punishment for his absence, the delegate of Pakistan should break dance on the floor when he comes back. The fact that laughing was not in order did not prove itself to be useful at that moment. After the hmm - average start of the morning, ECOSOC passed the resolution and learned the full consequences of inappropriate note passing.

Page 6 JOMUN What REALLY Happens in the Admin Room... By: Gabby Pires From fighting stubborn printers to jumping shoe obstacles, the admin department breaks a sweat to make sure -- God forbid -- no delegate has to let go of the opportunity to pass a note about their opinion on the ceiling colour. While Admin is known for note passing and setting up country plates, they do a lot more than merely working as messenger pigeons. The admin room is as full of chaos as it is of stories collected throughout the conference. While in the committee rooms, the admin s only problem is keeping awake while notes are suspended or manage all the notes when they are not. However, the issues in the Secretariat room can all be summed up in two words: THE PRINTER. All issues could be avoided if the honoured delegates simply didn t all decide to print their resolutions AT THE SAME TIME. It gets too confusing. We not only have to print but staple and distribute the resolutions and it s really hard to do all of that in a given amount of time and still make sure that all rooms have the necessary number of copies said Simay Erayas. The ancient printer does not help either the first printer we had took forever to print everything. Sometimes it just denied to and we had to spend more time trying to print than the printing actually would take. By the second day, we had to replace it said Ms Slattery, the director responsible for admin. But the chaos also gives some space to laughter. Every time someone comes back to the room, there s a new story. The committees are very entertaining sometimes said Gabriela Mercade. Note passing is definitely the highlight of the conference. Although the delegates should use the notes for official conversations, it does not keep them from using such to discuss subjects from the colour of the walls to their wishes to elope. I really like the notes from Human Rights, they never fail to amuse me said Ines de Vlieghe. As for keeping themselves awake, the president of admin, Tadiwa Wazara recalled, by second break, your feet hurt so much, you can t even concentrate on anything else, so I don t think sleeping is really possible. Ines says that looking at what the delegates are doing when they think they re not being watched is always interesting. Comments on the boredom problem have become increasingly common, since as JOMUN comes to an end, our delegates seem to have become overly acquainted with each other, logically causing notes to be suspended with an incredible frequency. In a world in which wearing high heels could possibly injure a person for life, admin are the real people behind the show.

Funny Notes From Admin: What s your definition of getting girls? The way I look at you I could even be gay! Later on... The delegate would like to formally apologize for the note passing between delegates. Is it possible for the delegate to keep the notes for memorial purposes? Chair: The note has been given to Press, you can have your memory in the form of the Jomun Journal. Delegate: No! my girlfriend will kill me!! Is the chair open to bribes? Word Search! See if you can find all of the words... If looks could kill you would be murdering! What s that word for someone who puts money into something in hopes of a gain in the future? I am aware that this is a idiotic question but please answer me.
