The Golden Age of Athens 1 2 During the Golden Age, Athens got rich through gold and silver trade mined by slaves around the region. Golden Age of Athens BC Tribute payments by allies to Athens made them richer. Tribute Payments made to Athens by its allies Athens made 1ots of advancements in the arts, science, philosophy, literature and math. Pericles was the leader during most of this time. 3 Pericles made democracy stronger in Athens. Made a law that the city state PAID the officials. Poor people could afford to be involved. 4 Athens did lots of great stuff under Pericles such as construction of the Parthenon in honor of Athena AutoSave 2
Ancient Greece Religious Beliefs 1 Greeks worshipped a family of 12 gods and goddesses. Each one ruled a different area. Know at least one of the gods or goddesses. Be able to write a paragraph about him/her. 2 The Greeks were careful when honoring their gods. They didn't want to make them angry because they were temperamental and mean. AutoSave 3
Gods and Goddesses 1 Greeks built temples for their gods wherever they lived. Gods had human forms and characteristics. Immortal live forever 2 Honored gods ruler was Zeus lived on Mt. Olympus ALSO honored mortal heroes like Achilles 3 each city stated honored one of the gods more than others they held festivals and honored their god extra (like sacrificing animals) every four years the city states stopped fighting and came together for an athletic competition to honor Zeus at Mt. Olympus The Olympics AutoSave 4
The Oracles 1 oracles sacred sites where it was believed that the gods spoke Greeks asked the gods for advice responses were usually in a riddle delivered by a priest wanted the gods to show them how to live or behave or would foretell the future AutoSave 5
The Search for Knowledge 1 Starting about 150 yrs before the Golden ge of Athens some people began to believe that the gods were not in control of the world. AutoSave 6
Greek Science and Philosophy 1 philosophers came up with the idea of atoms philosophers believed that people could think to understand their world observe and think to figure out what is going on in nature philosopher people who believed that people dould reason and use the powers of the mind to understand natural events. Thales believed everything was made of water Democritus believed everything was made of tiny particles called atoms Democritus was more right AutoSave 7
Socrates 1 Philosophers were teachers and would talk to their students in public Socrates would talk with anyone, anytime usually in the public market 2 Socrates focused on the qualities of man like justice and courage Know thyself Socrates used questioning to make people think about what they said and what they believed. Some people got angry (especially the ones who thought they were really smart) when Socrates would ask them questions that showed they didn't know what they were talking about. 3 Socrates was brought to trial for dishonoring the gods (he didn't completely believe that they actually controlled everything) and corrupting the minds of young people (He helped them figure out how to question the people in charge like he did) Convicted and sentenced to death by suicide (had to drink hemlock) AutoSave 8
Plato and Aristotle 1 Plato was a student of Socrates and wrote down a lot of what he said. Because Socrates was sentence to death by a jury of Athenians, it made Plato worry whether democracy was as good as it seemed to be. In a book called The Republic, Plato explained that he believed society should have three groups: 1. workers, 2. soldiers, 3. philosopher rulers Plato taught Aristotle Aristotle believed that logic and reason should be used to make all decisions (not a bad idea) AutoSave 9
Visual and Dramatic Arts 1 The Greeks put a lot of time and money into the arts architecture, sculpture, and drama to honor the gods AutoSave 10
The Parthenon My Pics are from the replica in Nashville 1 Pericles (Athenian ruler) decided to rebuild the Acropolis Wanted to make all the buildings big and impressive 2 The biggest and most impressive building on the Acropolis was the Parthenon (temple of Athena) Tried to look perfect Had one big statue of Athena inside 3 Lots of sculptures outside Meant to show action, visually balanced, look lifelike but are perfect The goal of Greek art= show perfection in an orderly and balanced way AutoSave 11
1 Dramas Greeks are the first people to write plays Mostly during the Golden Age 2 Tragedies told stories of people put in horrible positions and had to make impossible choice Tragedy a serious story that usually ends with a disaster for the main character AutoSave 12
Comedies 1 Made fun of well known citizens and politicians AutoSave 13
Many City States, One People 1Greeks were very patriotic. So, they all tried to take part in government. Believed in free speech. Felt safe to try new ideas in politics, art, philosophy Traded with Egypt and around the Mediterranean learned and accepted ideas from other places 2 Greeks called themselves HELLENES (the word Greek in the greek language) (remember Helen of Troy?) no matter what city state they were from 3 Olympics they talked about it again AutoSave 14
