1 Truth and falsehood Feb Ps 12:1, 2 Wednesday Readings 1 2 Help, LORD; for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful fail from among the children of men. They speak vanity every one with his neighbour: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak. Eph 4:1, Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you. SH 82:1 2 In a world of sin and sensuality hastening to a greater development of power, it is wise earnestly to 1 consider whether it is the human mind or the divine Mind which is influencing one. 3 Judas conspired against Jesus. SH 47:22 He knew that the world generally loves a lie better than Truth; and so he plotted the betrayal of Jesus in order to raise himself in popular esti- mation. His dark plot fell to the ground, and the traitor fell with it. SH 26: Saul of Tarsus beheld the way the Christ, or Truth only when his uncertain sense of right yielded to a spiritual sense, which is always right. Then the man was changed. Thought assumed a nobler outlook, and his life became more spiritual. He learned the wrong that he had done in persecuting Christians, whose religion he had not understood, and in humility he took the new name of Paul. Conversion of Saul SH 9:1 2 1 Meekly our Master met the mockery of his unrecognized grandeur. SH 8:25 26 He unveiled the Christ, the spiritual idea of divine Love. SH 26: This Christ, or divinity of the man Jesus, was his divine nature, the godliness which animated him. Christ s demonstration SH 458:2 25 The Christianly scientific man reflects the divine law, thus becoming a law unto himself. He does violence to no man. Neither is he a false accuser. The panoply of wisdom SH 444: Let us be faithful in pointing the way through Christ, as we understand it, but let us also be careful always to judge righteous judgment, and never to condemn rashly. Charity to those opposed SH 207:9 1 /9

4 9 We must learn that evil is the awful deception and unreality of existence. Evil is not supreme; good is not helpless; nor are the 12 so-called laws of matter primary, and the law of Spirit secondary. Subordination of evil SH 186:11 14 Evil is a negation, because it is the absence of truth. 12 It is nothing, because it is the absence of something. It is unreal, because it presupposes the absence of God, the omnipotent and omnipresent. SH 480: 25 The Evil negative and self-destructive The supposititious parent of evil is a lie. SH 287: Evil calls itself something, when it is nothing. SH 71:2 4 It It is neither person, place, nor thing, but is simply a belief, an illusion of material sense. SH 186:17 20 Evil is self-assertive. It says: I am a real entity, overmastering good. This falsehood should strip evil of all 18 pretensions. The only power of evil is to destroy itself. It can never destroy one iota of good. SH 225: The despotic tendencies, inherent in mortal mind and always germinating in new forms of tyranny, must be rooted out through the action of the divine Mind. Slavery abolished SH 57:8 9 Truth creates neither a lie, a capacity to lie, nor a liar. 9 SH 58: (only) Truth should, and does, drive error out of all selfhood. 4/9

5 SH 476: Learn this, O mortal, and earnestly seek the spiritual status of man, which is outside of all material selfhood. SH 294:25 26 Man's genuine selfhood is recognizable only in what is good and true. SH 216:11 14 The understanding that the Ego is Mind, and that 12 there is but one Mind or intelligence, begins at once to destroy the errors of mortal sense and to supply the truth of immortal sense. Servants and masters SH 569: 5 Every mortal at some period, here or hereafter, must grapple with and overcome the mortal belief in a power opposed to God. SH 57:5 6 We sustain Truth, not by accepting, but by rejecting a lie. 6 SH 296:26 28 Mortal mind judges by the testimony 27 of the material senses, until Science obliterates this false testimony. SH : Truth, Life, and Love are a law of annihilation to everything unlike themselves, because they declare nothing except God. Annihilation of error SH 447:20 22 Expose and denounce the claims of 21 evil and disease in all their forms, but realize no reality in them. SH 54:15 15 The great verities of existence are never excluded by falsity. SH 97: /9

6 It requires courage to utter truth; for the higher Truth lifts her voice, the louder will error scream, until its inarticulate sound is forever silenced in oblivion. SH 542:5 9 Though error hides 6 behind a lie and excuses guilt, error cannot forever be concealed. Truth, through her eternal laws, unveils error. Truth causes sin to betray itself, and sets upon 9 error the mark of the beast. SH 45: You uncover sin, not in order to injure, but in order to bless the corporeal man; and a right motive has its reward. SH 8: If a friend informs us of a fault, do we listen patiently to the rebuke and credit what is said? Do we not rather give thanks that we are not as other men? During many years the author has been most grateful for merited rebuke. The wrong lies in unmerited censure, in the falsehood which does no one any good. Searching the heart SH 45:16 17 Honesty Honesty is spiritual power. Dishonesty is human weakness, which forfeits divine help. Knowledge and honesty SH 449:7 11 The wrong done another reacts most heavily against one's self. Right adjusts the balance sooner or later. 9 Think it easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for you to benefit yourself by injuring others. Right adjusts the balance SH 464:2 The weapons of bigotry, ignorance, envy, fall before an honest heart. SH 472:26 29 The right motive and its reward 27 Therefore the only reality of sin, sickness, or death is the awful fact that unrealities seem real to human, erring Unrealities that seem real 6/9

7 belief, until God strips off their disguise. SH 2:15 20 In 15 In patient obedience to a patient God, let us labor to dissolve with the universal solvent of Love the adamant 18 of error, self-will, self-justification, and self-love, which wars against spirituality and is the law of sin and death. SH 18:2 Obedience to Truth gives man power and strength. SH 91:5 Let us rid ourselves of the belief that man is separated 6 from God, and obey only the divine Principle, Life and Love. Here is the great point of departure for all true spiritual growth. SH 4: Simply asking that we may love God will never make us love Him; but the longing to be better and holier, expressed in daily watchfulness and in striving to assimilate more of the divine character, will mould and fashion us anew, until we awake in His likeness. Watchfulness requisite SH 28:2 5 There is too much animal courage in society and not 1 sufficient moral courage. Christians must take up arms against error at home and abroad. They must grapple with sin in themselves and in others, and continue this warfare until they have finished their course. Christian warfare SH 162:9 9 The effect of this Science is to stir the human mind to a change of base, on which it may yield to the harmony of the divine Mind. SH 450: Some people yield slowly to the touch of Truth. Few yield without a struggle, and many are reluctant to acknowledge that they have yielded; but un- Touchstone of Science 7/9

8 18 less this admission is made, evil will boast itself above good. SH 8:14 18 If we feel the aspiration, humility, gratitude, and love which our words express, 15 this God accepts; and it is wise not to try to deceive ourselves or others, for there is nothing covered that 18 shall not be revealed. SH 45:26 The apostle says: For if a man think himself to be 27 something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself. This thought of human, material nothingness, which Science inculcates, enrages the carnal mind and is the 0 main cause of the carnal mind's antagonism. SH 448:0 2 0 To talk the right and live the wrong is foolish deceit, doing one's self the most harm. SH 22:6 6 9 Waking to Christ's demand, mortals experience suffering. This causes them, even as drowning men, to make vigorous efforts to save themselves; and through Christ's precious love these efforts are crowned with success. Moral retrogression SH 495:20 Let Christian Science, 21 instead of corporeal sense, support your understanding of being, and this understanding will supplant error with Truth, replace mortality with immortality, and silence discord with harmony. SH 458:25 The The Christian Scientist wisely shapes his course, and is honest and consistent in following the leadings of divine 27 Mind. He must prove, through living as well as healing and teaching, that Christ's way is the only one 0 by which mortals are radically saved from sin and sickness. 8/9

9 SH 28:29 The trials encountered by prophet, disciple, and apostle, 0 of whom the world was not worthy, await, in some form, every pioneer of truth.
