1 Andrew Murray's Works - posted by todd, on: 2005/7/30 2:06 I have been blessed by some of Andrew Murray's teachings. I am amazed at how much he wrote. If you look on amazo n it just seems like never-ending titles of books. It makes me wonder if his materials are getting published by different p ublishers who are changing the titles of books but a lot of the content is the same. Or maybe even sometimes the same publisher doing this. I know this type of thing can happen. I also know there are some compilation volumes. Does anybody have some kind of reference about Murray's works? Li ke a comprehensive listing? Also, wouldn't it be nice if he had a "Complete Works"? I feel like it would sell real well. There seems to be a lot of resp ect for this man's writings throughout different streams in the Church. One problem if figuri ng out if new books that are being published are duplicates of older ones just with new titles. I know many publishing co mpanies switch the titles of murray's books. Also I believe many of his books if not all are all public domain, that means t hey can be re-sold without permission in most cases. I used to own alot of early 1900 copies of his books, I still have a f ew in my home in Toronto. EDIT: "444 results for Andrew Murray" on a search at amazon, this could take a while to figure it out and research. But I think its a great idea brother. I have recieved untold help from Murray's books. One bit of advice I would give you regarding his titles - very many of those 400+ books you find on Amazon are part of a large series with fancier covers that have been "edited for the contemporary reader." Whatever that means, I wouldn't e ven bother with these. Besides the fact that I just don't want other people editing what I read and tampering with classic s, I have looked at several and found entire chapters missing. I wa s going to recommend CLC, but I'm disappointed to see that even they are now publishing "edited" editions! Argh! So fr ustrating! Still, I do think they are your best bet. That's kind of relieving and kind of frustrating. How did this happen? I appreciate the lists that have been offered, but it seems unlikely that we will be able to offer an authoritative listing like t his. Because it's been said that even some of the same titles have been edited, and how are we to know? This could ta ke awhile to figure out. I'm also curious, why wouldn't the list in Murray's biography be comprehensive of all his works? That would have been v ery helpful. Why would they leave anything out? Also, I'm hoping to also list some of the compilation volumes. Such as "Andrew Murray on Prayer" which I understand h as 6 of his books in one volume. I understand it includes: 1. Abide in Christ 2. The Prayer Life 3. Waiting on God 4. With Christ in the School of Prayer 5. The Ministry of Intercession 6. The Secret of Intercession I also believe that "God's Best Secrets" is a compilation volume but I'm not sure what books are included in it. I also believe there are other compliations like this. It would be helpful if anyone could list them. I have about original old copies of his books, perhaps the safest bet is to hunt down orgininal copies of his books and compile and orginal listing that way. Man would I love to be able to re-publish his works under the banner of Sermon Index. It would be a big task though. But what a blessing it would be. I love the simplicity of the way that the T. Austin sp arks complete works are being published by this small church in america. It would be neat to copy their method and do it cheaply and simply for the public to be blessed with them. I think I remember some people saying he never want ed his works to be sold for profit of something so they are upset about it. But I'm not really sure about the situation. Any one know what I'm talking about? Maybe I'm thinking of something else. Is there an authoritative list of TAS's complete works? 5 Re: - posted by todd, on: 2005/7/30 15:59 I just realized that I purchased a Murray book within the last few weeks at the Christian book store. I have it here in front of me. The title is "The Believer's Call to Commitment." Then the subtitle says, "A devotional study of Ephesians presented for today's reader." On the back it says, "Andrew Murray wrote this devotional study- first published in 1909 as Aids to Devotion..." I don't think this version (Bethany, 2005) is listed on Amazon, but I did find a Bethany, 1983 version. The description ev en for that version 22 years ago says: Originally titled Aids to Devotion, this study on Ephesians focuses on the Holy Spirit and Christian commitment. Writing nearly a cen tury ago, Andrew Murray clearly teaches that commitment to Christ must be based not on determination but on complete dependence on the Holy Spirit. While retaining the authorâ s message and style, this edition has been carefully edited to update the language for the 21st century reader. (My bold- I think that sounds really good) So they've been updating the language for awhile. It seems pretty tricky to me in this 2005 version that I recently purcha sed. The subtitle, "Presented for Today's Reader" doesn't seem clear to me. I think when I bought it I just read that as meaning it's being republished for today's reader, not that the language has been edited. I don't see it mentioned anywh ere else except in the publication data in small print on the copyright page. There in the official summary it says: "Newly update for today's reader, this devotional study of Ephesians explores how a committed Christian life begins with depen dence on the Holy Spirit" On another front page there's this list: Books by Andrew Murray From Bethany House Publisher With Updated Language Abiding in Christ Absolute Surrender The Andrew Murray Daily Reader The Believer's Call to Commitment The Believer's Daily Renewal Believing Prayer The Blood of Christ The Fullness of the Spirit Humility A Life of Obedience Living a Prayerful Life The Ministry of Intercessory Prayer The Path of Holiness Teach Me to Pray I am wondering if Bethany is the only publisher that has updated the language. Maybe Whitaker doesn't do this. I don't think it's necessarily a bad idea to update the language. I think it might help many people. But I would like side n otes, appendix, etc. showing the original language as well. I think that would be great. Just like how in the Bible someti mes there's a notation which is linked to a side note that gives the literal translation, etc. Page 5/7

The Bridge-Logos description for Humility says, "Subheads added throughout the book to aid in following and understanding the text. Index of subheads to enable the reader to easily find material previously read." I'm not sure what this exactly means. It doesn't sound like it includes the original text, which is what I would really want. But it might. Does anyone have that version? Several of Austin-Sparks' books are being put out by different publishers, but the bulk of his writings are available at no c ost from the Emmanuel Church in Tulsa, OK, who publish and distribute his works as a ministry. It is a remarkable oper ation. During his lifetime the books published by Witness & Testimony were sold at a very reasonable price, mainly to cover printing costs; but he never "made money" o ut of his books. The whole work was supported by gifts and donations from appreciative readers. Emmanuel Church, (see "Austin-Sparks Resources" thread in the TAS forum), republish his works free of charge; but I a lways encourage people who order from them to help them out financially, as this enterprise is quite expensive. 7 It must also be noted that TAS did not want his works to be edited. Unfortunatly some publishers have done it. What I have done personally is to print everything that is put online on and got the messages bo unded in 100 pages volumes. In this way one can read them at leasure. Manfred Page 7/7
