1.1 Importance of Youth Youth is an important group of Thai population o Important for who? The nation needs to rely on the youth o Why? If youths are of good quality, the country will progress and easely develop o How can we measure the quality of youths?
Thai society expects youths to be the quality citizens with: Knowledge, abilities, wisdom, virtue and ethics o So they will be able to take responsibilities Improving themselves and their nation And they should be: Self-disciplined, responsible And they should not: Behave badly or harmfully to the society But, who is the society? How to define good or bad behavior? And the other way around: what should youths do if society behave badly or harmfully to the youths?
As citizens, youths need to be trained to have a public mind, which is fundamentally preferable o Who needs so? o What s a public mind? o Why should all think the same to better protect the interest of the society and the nation? o Can you protect Thailand using knowledge and critical thinking, instead of having public minds or expressing and conducting oneness? o If in North Korea they were to do the same, will you be ok with that?
1.2 Behaving as a Quality Youth 1. Respect rules and regulations of the society To help society live peacefully and prevent people from taking advantage of or harming each other. Youths should not: o Get involved in vices What about adults? o Be addicted to computer games What about adults vices? Can t we learn and improve skills while gaming? o Skip school What about all the activities and ceremonies?
o Destroy public property and environment What about the destruction of Rayong s environment by greedy companies and wrong public decisions? 2. Abide by laws Because the constitutions says so. Sure, but what is a constitution? What is the purpose of it? Who creates it? What about laws obviously NOT RESPECTED in Pattaya? The western definition of constitution is: a set of rules that, if respected, can grant the RIGHTS of the citizens in a given society.
3. Eager to learn Learn? Exactly, that s why I tell you so many inconvenient truths my dear students! A person must grow to be a quality citizen. To do so, he/she must be educated and must accumulate skills. But please do not mix up EDUCATION and WISDOM/KNOWLEDGE Youths must spend time learning different branches of knowledge, which are not limited only to the classroom. But you don t do so, you spend too much time at school, doing useless stuff No time for physical and practical knowledge Scandinavian education is far better
4. Be honest Youths must be honest. They should be shameful and afraid of sinful action. Really? Why? Shouldn t adults give the example? (Pattaya, etc) What does sinful have to do with civil duties? One of the main problems that affect the country s development is corruption, causing huge loss of government budget. Whose fault? Government budget is people s money, so they are the ones being affect by corruption
5. Be disciplined It is very necessary for the society to progress. It makes people doing what they should do and refraining from doing things they should not do. Sure, but who decides was is good and what is bad? Many societies excel and excelled with low levels of discipline. So what? (Read Mutual Aid, by Kropotkin. You can find a free ebook in PDF here:
6. Have virtue and ethics UNIT 1 ROLES AND DUTIES OF YOUTHS TO THE SOCIETY AND THE NATION Youths must follow the teachings of the religion that one believes in. One of the social problems caused by youths is that some of them do not understand the importance of religious teachings. Confusing sentences: it doesn t make sense to force somebody to follow his/her own religious beliefs. Adults often don t respect it either (low quality education, over-consumption, environmental destruction, prostitution, etc.) In a free society, one follows what he/she decides to be the best for himself/herself In free societies, you can easily find people NOT following any religion. There are non-religious people with virtue, and there s religious people without virtue In Thailand, Buddhism is the official state religion. And you must learn about it at school. Not necessarily a choice or a genuine belief, because it is imposed from top to bottom.
