Na$ve Science, Quantum Physics, and Wholis$c Educa$on IWISE CONFERENCE ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO 2015 Possibili$es for Powerful Collabora$ons Post Age of Reason
THE AGE OF REASON THE AGE OF REASON CAME INTO EXISTENCE DURING THE 16 TH CENTURY IN EUROPE. IT WAS A PARADIGMATIC, IDEOLOGICAL, AND PHILOSPHICAL MOVEMENT. IT IS ABOUT RATIONALISM: A BELIEF THAT YOU CAN COME TO KNOW OR ARRIVE AT TRUTH STRICTLY THROUGH REASON AS OPPOSED TO FAITH, RELIANCE ON THE PAST, INTUITION, AND METAPHYSICS. IT GAVE RISE TO DEISM: WE CAN COME TO KNOW EVERYTHING THROUGH OUR GIFT OF REASON FROM GOD. GOD MADE AN ORDERLY UNIVERSE AND IT IS GOOD AND BEAUTIFUL. GOD DOES NOT PLAY DICE. (EINSTEIN)
RAMIFICATIONS AND IMPLICATIONS OF THE AGE OF REASON THE AGE OF REASON, IT SEEMS, WAS A COUNTER MOVEMENT TO THE OLD ESTABLISHMENT OF THE DIVINE RULE OF KINGS AND RELIANCE ON TRADITION. IT ATTEMPTED TO SUBJECT ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING TO RATIONALISM. IT DID AWAY WITH THE SUBJECTIVE AND DEALT WITH ONLY THE OBJECTIVE. IT DID AWAY WITH EMOTIONS AND FEELINGS. FOR INSTANCE, WOMEN WERE TOO EMOTIONAL TO BE SCIENTISTS AND LEADERS. SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE CAME INTO BEING.
THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD IN THE AGE OF REASON MYSTICISM, MIRACLES, GHOSTS, AND THE LIKE WERE FROWNED UPON. MEASUREMENT AND, HENCE, THE ROLE OF MATHEMATICS BECAME THE FOUNDATION OF THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD. EXPERIMENTATION AND PURE REASON CAN BRING ABOUT KNOWLEDGE. FOR INSTANCE, THE HIGGS PARTICLE. THE SCIENTISTS SAY, THROUGH OUR REASONING (FORMULA) THE HIGGS PARTICLE SHOULD BE OCCUPYING THIS SPACE AND IT S WEIGHT SHOULD BE THIS. THERE IS NO ROOM FOR ANYTHING THAT CANNOT BE MEASURED NOR IS THERE ROOM FOR SUBJECTIVITY.
CHALLENGES TO THE AGE OF REASON VON GOETHE S SCIENCE IN THE LATE 1700 S AND EARLY 1800 S DID CHALLENGE THE PRINCIPLES OF THE AGE OF REASON. ONE CAN SAY HE WAS A FORERUNNER OF QUANTUM PHYSICS. HE HAD A SPIRITUAL APPROACH TO SCIENCE. FOR HIM, THE OBSERVED AND THE OBSERVER INTERACTED. GOETHE S SCIENCE WAS ABOUT WHOLENESS, INTEGRATION OF OTHER FIELDS LIKE ART, AND NOTIONS OF QUALITY. THEN IN THE EARLY 19OO S, QUANTUM PHYSICS CAME ON THE SCENE. IT IS ABOUT UNCERTAINTY, PARTICLE/WAVE DUALITY, NON- LOCALITY, CONSTANT MOTION, PROBABILITY, SPIRITUALITY (JEREMY HAYWARD).
NATIVE SCIENCE AND THE AGE OF REASON THE AGE OF REASON WAS IN FULL BLOOM AT THE TIME OF COLONIZATION OF NORTH AMERICAN INDIANS. BECAUSE NATIVE SCIENCE WAS ABOUT WHOLENESS, SPIRITUALITY, WAVES AS OPPOSED TO PARTICLES, EVERYTHING BEING ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS, AND EVERYTHING BEING ANIMATE, IT WAS TOTALLY DISCOUNTED BY THE RATIONALISTS. BECAUSE IT WAS NOT ABOUT MEASUREMENT AND MATHEMATICS, IT WAS NOTHING BUT MYTHOLOGY. IT WAS NOT TAKEN SERIOUSLY. BUT LET S TAKE ANOTHER LOOK.
Constant Flux 7
Energy Waves
Space/Place
Language is Process/Ac$on
Na$ve Science- Quantum Physics
Na$ve Science- Quantum Physics Quantum Physics Na$ve Science Consciousness: affects reality affects reality Maher/Objects: space curvature descrip$ons Time: space/$me con$nuum just is Maher: par$cle/wave duality wave Reality: no deep reality subjec$ve Cause/effect: paradox all cause/effect Perspec$ve: reduc$onist wholis$c Method: experiment/proof observa$on Knowledge: cumula$ve renewal Language: Binary/math process
Current Science Research Some Observa$ons Higgs Par$cle/field Na$ve science would say: Transforma$on/spirit Grand Unified Theory Will never happen- cannot reproduce energy levels of the big bang Via Superstring Theory, may be - it is about flux, process, and ac$on
Modified Newtonian Dynamics From a MOND perspec$ve, Einstein s Rela$vity is ques$onable- speed on the outside of the galaxy and speed on the inside of the galaxy is the same: no rela$vity and may be no dark maher Dark maher suggests uniform rota$onal speeds which do not affect Newtonian laws of gravity
Western and Na$ve Science Western Science is largely aimed at explora$on Na$ve Science is aimed at sustainability We exist in a very narrow gap of ideal condi$ons: we need to maintain those condi$ons if we are to be around as long as the fish has
THE OPPORTUNITY FOR POWERFUL COLLABORATIONS WESTERTN SCIENCE IS ABOUT MEASUREMENT. NATIVE SCIENCE IS ABOUT ESSENCE AND QUALITY. WESTERN SCIENCE IS PROPOSITIONAL. NATIVE SCIENCE DRAWS ON EXPERIENCE, TRADITION, SPIRITS, AND DREAMS. IT S RESOURCE BASE IS MUCH BROADER IN SCOPE. WESTERN SCIENCE IS REDUCTIONIST IN NATURE. NATIVE SCIENCE IS WHOLISTIC. WESTERN SCIENCE IS ABOUT QUANTITY. NATIVE SCIENCE IS ABOUT QUALITY. THE COMBINATION OF BOTH WILL LEAD TO A MORE COMPLETE SCIENCE!
COLLABORATION REQUIRES DIVERSITY DIVERSITY IS THE PATH TO WHOLISM UNIFORMITY IS THE PATH TO THE END LET S USE DISEASE AS AN EXAMPLE WHEN THE HEALTH PROFILES OF A SOCIETY ARE UNIFORM, A NEW DISEASE CAN WIPE WHOLE POPULATIONS - WHEN THE HEALTH PROFILES ARE DIVERSE, PANDEMICS DO NOT OCCUR
WESTERN EDUCATION SYSTEM WESTERN EDUCATION IS A PRODUCT OF THE AGE OF REASON: IT IS RATIONAL, LINEAR, SINGULAR, AND SPECIALIST ORIENTED IT ATTEMPTS TO MAKE EVERYBODY UNIFORM JUST LIKE PRODUCTS RUNNING OFF OF AN ASSEMBLY LINE IT IS ABOUT MEASUREMENT, ACCUMULATION OF FACTS: IT IS NOT ABOUT KNOWLEDGE, LOVE, RELATIONSHIPS, GOODNESS
EDUCATION: A FLUX PERSPECTIVE THE FLUX IS ABOUT CHAOS AND DIVERSITY REMEMBER THE OLD SAYING GIVE ME SIMPLICITY ON THE OTHER SIDE OF COMPLEXITY? A FLUX PERSPECTIVE MEANS RISING ABOVE THE SEEMING COMPLEXITY TO LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURE
ARTICULATING THE WHOLISTIC VIEW ONE OF MY STUDENTS WROTE, IN CONTRAST TO THE STATIC AND CATEGORICAL WESTERN VIEW, THE BLACKFOOT VIEW IS FLUID AND EASITLY ESCHEWS BOUNDARIES BECAUSE WITHIN THIS WORLDVIEW THERE IS AN INGRAINED UNDERSTANDING THAT THESE BOUNDARIES CAN EASILY BE TRANSCENDED. THIS ABILITY TO TRANSCEND BOUNDARIES LEADS TO RECOGNITION OF COMPLEXITY AND WONDER WITHIN A SHIFTING REALITY AND OPENS SPACE TO UNDERSTAND AND APPRECIATE THE POSSIBILITY OF CREATIVITY.
ARTICULATING THE WHOLISTIC VIEW HUMAN OBSERVATION OF THE FLUX IS NOT DISORDERLY AND CHAOTIC. RATHER AS CLYDE KLUCKHOHN SUGGESTS, IT IS ABSORBED PEACEMEAL AND SLOWLY INTEGRATED WITH THE PREVIOUS IDEOLOGY. IN OTHER WORDS, ADAPTATION IS MADE WHEN THINGS CHANGE RATHER THAN REPLACEMENT. AS JOHN RALSTON SAUL SAYS, IT IS BASED ON THE IDEA OF AN INCLUSIVE CIRCLE THAT EXPANDS AND GRADUALLY ADAPTS THIS IS NOT A WESTERN OR EUROPEAN CONCEPT. IT COMES STRAIGHT FROM ABORIGINAL CULTURE.
ARTICULATING THE WHOLISTIC VIEW IN OTHER WORDS, THE NATIVE PARADIGM CAN TRANSCEND COMPLEXITY AND ARRIVE AT SIMPLICITY. SO WHAT IS THE WHOLISHTIC AND SIMPLISTIC VIEW? IT IS ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS IT IS ABOUT ABOUT RENEWAL IT IS ABOUT ADAPTATION AND NOT REPLACEMENT
WHOLISTIC EDUCATION IF OUR PRESENT EDUCATION SYSTEM CAN INCULCATE IN OUR FUTURE GENERATIONS, IN A SEA OF DIVERSITY, RELATIONSHIPS, RENEWAL, AND ADAPTABILITY, IT WILL EVER GET CLOSER TO A WHOLISTIC EDUCATION. THE PRESENT EDUCATION SYSTEM IS TOO MUCH OF A PRODUCT OF THE AGE OF REASON. THE PAST 200 YEARS IS THE SAME OLD A PARADIGM SHIFT IS REQUIRED. THE NATIVE PARADIGM IS WAITING IN THE WINGS. THE AGE OF REASON IS NOW A PASSING PHASE AND OBSOLETE. THE NATIVE PARADIGM PRESENTS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR CREATIVITY!
