Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow briefly: english-course 'a' (Summative Assessment - II) Time : 3 Hrs. Maximum Marks : Do not write anything on the question paper. 4. All the answers must be correctly numbered as in the question paper and written in the answer sheet provided to you. 5. Ensure that questions of each section are answered together. 6. Read each question carefully and follow the instructions. 7. Strictly adhere to the word limit given with each question. Marks will be deducted for exceeding the word limit. More damaging than ozone depletion and far harder to control is the greenhouse effect, caused in large part by carbon dioxide. The effect of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is comparable to the glass of a greenhouse. It lets in the warming rays of the Sun but keeps the excess heat from re-radiating back into space. Man contributes to the greenhouse effect through carbon dioxide generated by burning of fossil fuels. This is hastening a global warming trend. In the decades ahead, scientists predict drastically altered weather patterns, major shifts of deserts and fertile regions, intensification of tropical storms and a rise in sea level caused mainly by the expansion of sea water as it warmps up. 0 Unlike ozone depletion, the greenhouse effect has some positive [35]

2 consequences. It prevents the Earth from being an ice-frozen planet. But the massive burning of coal, for instance, which pumps large quantities of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, might be too much of a good thing. By the year 2050, if the present rate of burning of fossil fuel continues, the Earth will be much warmer. The consequences would be disastrous. The plains could become a dust bowl. Some of the excess heat would be trapped by the oceans, which have an enormous heat absorbing capacity, but this heat would have to be released over the years. Nations are already worried over deforestation, especially of the Amazon rain forest in Brazil, which has been slashed for mining and agriculture.. (a) What is more damaging than ozone depletion?
