1 Holy Spirit Retreat Center Spring 2018 CENTER UPDATE The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1:5

2 A Letter From the Executive Director Dear Friends of Holy Spirit Retreat Center, The theme for this Center Update speaks of light shining in the darkness, and it is most appropriate to these times! As I sit here writing this letter, I m looking out at a dark and cloudy day, but along with the darkness comes the promise of rain and cooler temperatures. This gets me thinking that there is always hope and goodness hidden amidst the darkness. The mystics tell us that we need darkness as well as light, and without the darkness, we wouldn t see or appreciate the light. When you re in the midst of darkness, these thoughts can be hard to swallow, but there is truth in them. Difficult times call forth creativity and courage; the best of human nature as well as the worst that humans are capable of. The choice is ours: How will we respond? We are offering some workshops, retreats and other programs that can help to bring out our inner giftedness and help us to keep our balance when the going gets rough. I invite you to take a look and treat yourself to some nurturing, or maybe just a little time apart from the craziness that will enable you to dive back into the fray with a calmer heart and mind. As you examine our programs, please note that we have increased our rates for single-day events and eight-day retreats. The extra income will enable us to better meet our expenses. We thank you for your understanding! Come enlighten yourself, and help us to bring some light into this New Year. In the Light of the Spirit, Chris Machado, SSS Mission Statement Holy Spirit Retreat Center, as a chartered ministry of the Sisters of Social Service, is rooted in Scripture and the spirit of St. Benedict. We strive to create an atmosphere of prayer and hospitality where community is nourished, each person can thrive and an interfaith environment is established. Featured on the Cover The cover photo of the candle shining in the darkness reminds us that The Light shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot overcome it. (John 1:5) Holy Spirit Retreat Center offers the space and a place where light shines and hope revives in the face of a world where darkness seems to be spreading. You are invited to come and sit in prayer and meditation and find comfort and solace in times of darkness. 2 Center Update Produced by DDCC, Inc. (818)

If you weren t with us last summer, no problem! Come enjoy the prayer, drumming, Medicine Wheel work and Native American lore with us. Daily, there is time with your spiritual director. Retreat is time to learn more about you in relationship to God and to others, and respond to the movement of the Spirit. In this setting, silence is an attitude of making space for God. Silence invites you to give your attention to all the ways that God can speak to you.
