e Howell Enneagram Profile Questionnaire The questionnaire is comprised of characteristics associated with a typical person s type and ego fixation. Those who have taken the passageway out of their fixation and are no longer trapped by it, will not score particularly high on any one type. This is because they operate in a more healthy and conscious way. Also, their fixations may be less severe, making such people no longer definable in terms of the characteristics of fixation. Richard Rohr in his book Falling Upward provides an excellent insight to this phenomenon. The task of the first half of life is to create a proper container for one s life and answer the first essential questions: What makes me significant? How can I support myself? and Who will go with me? The task of the second half of life is, quite simply, to find the actual contents that this container was meant to hold and deliver In other words, the container is not an end in itself, but exists for the sake of your deeper and fullest life, which you largely do not know about yourself. Far too many people just keep doing the repair work on the container itself and never throw their nets into the deep to bring in the huge catch that awaits them. (1) For those persons who the second half of life has enlightened, and those in fewer numbers who are younger and have also shed their ego, this assessment device must be approached in a different way. Answer the questions as if you were younger (between ages eighteen and thirty). This is the peak time of ego fixation before suffering has called life into question. These answers will yield a score which can trace your probable type and its fixation. Young people who are just now beginning to look at their lives, egos, suffering, and level of consciousness may find the Enneagram and this profile questionnaire useful. They may be able to distill what had been unclear to them about their motives, fears and desires. Finding their type can be a passageway to consciousness. Any assessment profile device that produces a type number for you is merely producing a set of personality characteristics that define your ego, strengths, weaknesses, and fixations. Knowing your ego type is not knowing the real you. This thought is expressed by Marion Woodman, If we have lived behind a mask all our lives, sooner or later if we are lucky the mask will be smashed. Then we will have to look in our mirror at our own identity. (2) The real you is your essence, which is the set of spiritual energies and principles that underlie your being. How you express these energies and principles is your real nature, free from the encumbrances and motivations of the ego fixation which you at one time thought was you. Yes, your personality comes into play in expressing your essence. The wonderful smile you may have, your ability to tell jokes, or the way you hum when you re happy all these are part of your one-of-a-kind personality. Inborn, they were shaped, then driven by ego fixation earlier in your life, yet now these same characterological traits are expressive of your essence and Holy Idea which gave birth to them at the beginning of your life. from Becoming Conscious: The Enneagram s Forgotten Passageway by Joseph B. Howell, Ph.d 1

Directions for taking the Howell Enneagram Questionnaire On each of the nine following segments each containing fifteen questions, circle or check the number on the Likert Scale which most represents your level of agreement or disagreement with the statements. This is a self-report questionnaire. It is not a standardized psychological test or a statistically validated test of any kind. It is a tool for self-inquiry. Results vary widely among respondents due to the subjective nature of this questionnaire. Results are for the use of the respondent only. Avoid choosing neutral (#3) if possible unless you are truly neutral and have absolutely no other inclination. By midlife the ego has usually modulated and adapted to a less intense expression than it had in early adulthood. Therefore, the classic inclinations of personality type with its fixations and avoidances may not be as intense or definitive for those in the second half of life. For most respondents in the second half of life and for those of any age whose ego intensity is significantly decreased compared to a previous time in life, it is best to type oneself as if the ego is intense. Many report that answering the questions as if one is in the third decade of life has been helpful in self-typing. Strongly Disagree Disagree Neutral Agree Strongly Agree Scoring: After answering each statement on the following pages, add up your score for each segment and place your nine totals on the lines beside each of the nine numbers. Higher scores indicate stronger identification with that type from Becoming Conscious: The Enneagram s Forgotten Passageway by Joseph B. Howell, Ph.d 2

SEGMENT 1 My judgments are usually accurate I work hard for perfection When others don t try to do the right thing, I get frustrated and exasperated I avoid outwardly expressing anger Standards, law, and order are far more important than relaxation, play and enjoyment Unfairness bothers me so I work to correct it all around me ings are either right or wrong, so you should follow the rules and be on time Hard work I do not shirk; it satisfies me Temptation is lurking to get us off track, and I am always on guard about this It is more important to be right than to be well liked I find myself monitoring others behavior, even if I keep it to myself Should s and should nots about my behavior, and others frequently play in my mind I get down and out when others don t recognize the right choice, even when I point it out to them I seem to do better when my heavy sense of keeping things in order is balanced by a light hearted attitude Giving people the benefit of the doubt is not a natural inclination, but a freeing experience for me Segment 1 Total (Enter this total on page 2 beside #1.) from Becoming Conscious: The Enneagram s Forgotten Passageway by Joseph B. Howell, Ph.d 3

SEGMENT 2 I know very well how to give, and I give often I am helpful and am known for it I really don t need much at all People like to feel they have a strong connection to me Unmet needs in others stir me to provide for them whether I have the energy or not I find myself anticipating what others are going to need so I can give it to them before they even ask If someone doesn t have needs for me to meet, I ll find someone who does When I work hard to meet others needs, I am secretly miffed if my efforts go unacknowledged and want to find some way to be not so available next time People need to express gratitude to those who give to them I feel more loved when I am close to others Relationships are very important to me and I have many Sometimes I give to insure my place in the world Many times I seem to be of service to so many that I am exhausted and over burdened I tell people nice things about themselves frequently Whenever I do acknowledge my own needs and ask for help, I can give authentically out of a fullness inside Segment 2 Total (Enter this total on page 2 beside #2) from Becoming Conscious: The Enneagram s Forgotten Passageway by Joseph B. Howell, Ph.d 4

SEGMENT 3 I will work tirelessly to avoid failure I take short cuts to be more efficient in succeeding A successful image is very important to me because that is what people are buying these days I can administrate, delegate and get goals accomplished well I am decisive and a leader My getting the job done successfully is more important than making sure every detail is right I pride myself in knowing what people want and I have the natural gift to adapt to their expectations It is second nature to me to advertise what I m accomplishing even in general conversation It doesn t hurt at all to drop a name if that gets me the identification I need to accomplish the goal e outward appearances and stated beliefs of someone send messages. at s why I try to look and talk in ways that bring me acceptance by those I am with Success is more important to me than authenticity Failure makes me feel vulnerable to rejection and inferiority When it s all over, the one with the most toys, wins Accomplishing for the community and its well-being has tempered my passion for purely personal accomplishment and has given me a solid sense of being valued and accepted Segment 3 Total (Enter this total on page 2 beside # 3) from Becoming Conscious: The Enneagram s Forgotten Passageway by Joseph B. Howell, Ph.d 5

SEGMENT 4 I like to think of myself as unique I secretly weep at the beauty others can t even seem to see I dress in the understated, but the unusual I avoid being thought of as run of the mill I experience deeper emotions than most people I am creative in how I live my life My past preoccupies my thoughts ere is a flaw in me, and I am looking for the special, perfect person who can understand it and help me with it I d rather have one very good piece of furniture than a house full of sticks and stuff I have a passion for the arts and the refined, well mannered life I have been very envious of some people to the point it aches e plight of abused or neglected people or animals haunts me to no end I am waiting to live my real life Tragedy and heartache are themes which captivate me Knowing the right cause for me has pulled me out of self-absorption into harmony with myself and others Segment 4 Total (Enter this total on page 2 beside the #4) from Becoming Conscious: The Enneagram s Forgotten Passageway by Joseph B. Howell, Ph.d 6

SEGMENT 5 I am wise I avoid feeling empty inside Knowledge is power for me e more I can take in, the less empty and vulnerable I feel I constantly observe and analyze what I see I am useless at a party when I have to engage in small talk I can fade into the wood work if I feel overwhelmed by a situation or a crowd My fantasy life is as real and important as my conscious life I hoard things, usually books, computer parts and information I need lots of private time to process and to sort things out It can anger me if someone tries to pry into my mind or force information or feelings from me I do not usually like groups Time and resources are not ever to be wasted I have a more quiet and non-assertive style naturally, yet when pushed, I can be strong and even powerful Stepping out of my cocoon, to share with others and the world scares me at first, but assures me that I am not really ever empty Segment 5 Total (Enter this total on page 2 beside #5) from Becoming Conscious: The Enneagram s Forgotten Passageway by Joseph B. Howell, Ph.d 7

SEGMENT 6 I am a loyal person I avoid being a renegade or deviant Being a team player gives me a feeling of family and of security I want to be protected by an authority figure who values me as part of the team Decisions are difficult for me as I want to be certain I think gaining consensus is the best way to keep things going smoothly in an organization I anticipate the worst case scenario and all the dangers it may bring I never shirk responsibility and duty because I fear the consequences of falling short and being blamed I second guess myself endlessly I am so afraid of what could go wrong, that I sometimes think I am cowardly I like a tight schedule and clear guidelines I am trying to crack the code to figure out life so I won t be so anxious I just know inside myself whether a person is on my side or whether they would do me in I like to appear harmless, humorous and well-meaning I surprise myself at how brave I can be when push comes to shove Segment 6 Total (Enter this total on page 2 beside # 6) from Becoming Conscious: The Enneagram s Forgotten Passageway by Joseph B. Howell, Ph.d 8

SEGMENT 7 I am happy most of the time I avoid pain of any kind, physical or mental ings could be ideal if people wouldn t be so gloomy, heavy, and serious I love to take in the tastes, sounds, flavors, textures and all the good things of life I wish to travel to other places and to delve into many interests, hobbies, and activities I can be the life of the party If some is good, more is better I love to be doing something or going somewhere all the time Being denied or deprived of things I need or want, is a nightmare for me I do not like to see pain or deprivation in movies, art, or in real life I am optimistic and lighthearted about the future and find myself planning a lot for it I like to host gatherings, and go to parties and celebrations I enjoy making people happy, as do entertainers I have been accused of having ADD because I bounce from one interest or place to another I am able to create more depth to my life when I let pain come in. It s hard to do, but I find that it s worth it Segment 7 Total (Enter this total on page 2 beside #7) from Becoming Conscious: The Enneagram s Forgotten Passageway by Joseph B. Howell, Ph.d 9

SEGMENT 8 I am powerful and strong I avoid any inner weakness Being viewed by others as strong and forceful is essential for me Only a few persons, like me, can take the heat of real leadership I have an insatiable lust for life, and all the larger than life things it brings me I appear well-to-do, with plenty of resources and backing I lose respect for anyone who won t stand up to me or fight me back I fight for justice, for the underdog or for the disenfranchised I will not be ordered around by anyone Introspection of emotions or sentiment does not interest me Few persons will ever see my vulnerabilities or my tenderness, but I am very aware of their presence Intimidation is a great way to command power in a relationship or organization I know where others underbellies are, and I force them to submit or else If others don t go along with my program, I simply withdraw my support and watch them collapse When I let my tender, more caring and giving side be seen, I feel a greater passion for living Segment 8 Total (Enter this total on page 2 beside # 8) from Becoming Conscious: The Enneagram s Forgotten Passageway by Joseph B. Howell, Ph.d 10

SEGMENT 9 I am peaceful and OK I keep things on an even keel I avoid conflict I tend to put myself down so people will know I m not a threat e world would be a peaceful place if people wouldn t get so hot and bothered by their issues. It doesn t matter anyway I am thought of as lazy by some, but I just don t have the energy level to keep up with them Harmony is the key I can mediate and arbitrate excellently because I see all sides all the time Give me my routine; sameness is so settling to me I love being in front of my flat screen Detachment from others is my way to stay unflappable, calm, and peaceful My motto is, Why stand when I can sit and why sit, if I can lie down? It causes me high anxiety when outer disasters or my procrastination lead to things unraveling, and collapsing my sameness. at is when I panic Underneath my self- abasement, I know I am important. Don t discount me, or I ll find a passive way to get you back I can find an even greater inner balance when I set goals and create energy to meet them Segment 9 Total (Enter this total on page 2 beside #9) from Becoming Conscious: The Enneagram s Forgotten Passageway by Joseph B.
