Liane Collot d Herbois Rudolf Steiner worked tirelessly for the sake of earthly-human evolution. His vision of Anthroposophy was always oriented to the future, never the past. He saw the task of Anthroposophy as a world-cultural one, not just to transform human culture today, but also to prepare for its future. His goal was a gradual spiritual awakening of humanity, expanding from an esoteric core of Anthroposophists to all those drawn into its transformative orbit through work undertaken in the world. And yet, as the 100th anniversary of the re-founding of the Anthroposophical Society approaches (in 2023/24), the mission, teachings, and even the words of Rudolf Steiner are in danger of being marginalized and ignored. Though the daughter movements such as Waldorf education and Biodynamics are growing, it seems that fewer people every year read and study what Rudolf Steiner taught. As human beings, we all have a duty to the future; and, as anthroposophists, we have a duty to ensure the possibility that Anthroposophy participate in shaping that 1

At SteinerBooks, we see our mission as the cultivation of Anthroposophy both by spiritually free individuals, singly and in groups, and as a Society working inwardly and outwardly to create the seeds of a future spiritual culture of selflessness, sacrifice, and creativity (spiritual research). For this reason, in collaboration with Rudolf Steiner Press in the United Kingdom, we are committed to publishing The Collected Works of Rudolf Steiner. Our mission to make anthroposophic literary works ever-more visible and accessible to the general public, thereby encouraging the cultivation and spread of Anthroposophy as a spiritual and cultural impulse remains strongly in the forefront of all that we undertake and accomplish as an organization. 4 Art History as a Reflection of Inner Spiritual Impulses Rudolf Steiner understood that the history of art is a field in which the evolution of consciousness is symptomatically and transparently revealed. This informal sequence of thirteen lectures was given during the darkest hours of World War I. It was a moment when the negative consequences of what he called the age of the consciousness soul, which had begun around 1417, were most terribly made apparent. In these lectures he sought to provide an antidote to pessimism. After describing the movement of consciousness from Greece into Rome, which coupled with influences from the Orthodox East, he showed how these influences transformed as the Middle Ages became the Renaissance. The process that begins with Cimabue and Giotto develops, deepens, and becomes more conscious in the great Renaissance masters Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphael. And then the continuation of this movement in the Northern masters Dürer and Holbein, as well as the whole German tradition. An entire lecture is devoted to Rembrandt, followed by one on Dutch and Flemish painting. Thus themes are woven together that bring us into the way in which past epochs of consciousness and art live again in our consciousness soul epoch. Replete with interesting information and over 800 color and black and white images, these lectures are rich and dense with ideas, enabling one to understand both the art of the Renaissance and the transformation of consciousness that it announced. 5 Goethe s Faust in the Light of Anthroposophy Spiritual-Scientific Commentaries on Goethe s Faust This is the sequel to CW 272: Anthroposophy in the Light of Goethe s Faust. By late 1916, Rudolf Steiner is interpreting Goethe s Faust in the light of anthroposophy. Steiner is an important interpreter of Goethe. Although his readings are unconventional and unsystematic, Steiner s insights into the text are penetrating and prescient: they open up scholarly avenues that were discovered and pursued by others only decades later and, in some cases, are still awaiting fuller elaboration. Steiner s account is completely unlike those of his contemporaries, including the Goethe scholars he admired most. It is neither a philological construction of the ideal text, nor a positivistic account of the biographical genesis of the work and influences on Goethe, nor an intellectual-historical recasting of the drama as implied philosophical argument, nor a viewpoint on the tale through the lens of an especially refined sensibility. Steiner contributed to scholarship on Faust above all by opening up new aesthetic perspectives; by revealing the centrality of Greek Mystery religion within the archetypal unconscious of Faust; by making manifest the duality of evil latent within Goethe s text; and by exploring the alchemical transformation of consciousness.
