It is the balancing principle; it is also the correcting principle and it is the Principle of all Principles. Guru is Shiva the Param Sambhu and Shiva is the Guru. For a Sahaja Yogi, the destination is The Mother. And the fruits of our journey is the Gurupada. As the Mother has told us again and again, every Sahaja Yogi has to become a Sahaja Guru, in the end or else it is pointless to be in Sahaja Yoga. The obvious question is how do we achieve it? This profound question has reverbrated throughout the ages in the hearts of the seekers. It is still agitating the minds of most of the Sahaja Yogis. If we intently go through the Holy Mother's expositions during the Guru Pujas year after year, we come across very many pointers which clearly constitute a road map for the pilgrim's progress. Keeping this in mind, we have reproduced here two of Her landmark talks on Guru tattwa, namely, Guru Puja 89 and Guru Puja 92, both at Cabella. We have also published here Shri Mataji's revealing insights on Guru tattwa during the Maha Shivaratri Puja in 2004 at Pune, India. In addition, this issue carries the Guru Ashtakam by Adi Shankaracharya and its English translation. This extraordinary Guru Sthuthi by itself can provide an answer to the anguished cries of real seekers. Last but not the least, we have also narrated an anecdote, a true story, from the life of Adi Shankaracharya, which is like a beacon that illumines the seekers' path littered with pitfalls and quagmires. Taken together, we hope this issue will be a real delight for our brothers and sisters. Let us bow to the Mother, the Guru, the Annapurneshwari, with a quote from Shri Adi Shankaracharya. 5 PILGRIM S PROGRESS Shri Mataji On How To Get Into Meditation (As you will recall, in the last two issues of Sahaja News, we had published, verbatim, two separate talks by our Holy Mother on 'How To Get Into Meditation'. Both are landmark talks delivered during meditation workshops conducted by Shri Mataji Herself. Both have the potential to cleanse us from within and take us into complete Nirvichar. With a little practice, we can really settle down into Nirvichar Samadhi, as a way of life. We should go through them again and again. But what is the essence of Sahaja Meditation? E F F O R T L E S S N E S S. It should be without any effort, on our part; it is the power of the Guru that works it out. Meditation is not the result of our efforts but the blessing of the Guru. This realisation should sink into our system. Then the progress becomes smooth. Everything becomes easy and effortless. Continuing in the same context, we reproduce here Shri Mataji's perhaps the most valuable advice in this regard, delivered on 1st Jan 1980, London, UK. Ed) July - August

6 Pilgrim's Progress How to Meditate, London, England 1st Jan The life... In the same way the vibrations... vibrations are coming, they are radiated. What you have to do is to expose yourself to it, the best is not to put in any effort, don't worry at what point you have a problem. Say many people during meditation I have seen, if they catch somewhere they go on looking after it, you just don't have to worry, you just let it go... and it will work by itself. So you don't have to put in any effort, this is what meditation is. Meditation means exposing yourself to God's Grace. Now the Grace itself knows how to cure you... it knows how to mend you... how to settle down itself into your own being... keep your spirit kindled... it knows everything. So you don't have to worry as to what you have to do, or what name you have to take... what mantras you have to do. In meditation, you have to be absolutely effortless. Expose yourself fully... and you have to be absolutely thoughtless at that time. Supposing... possibility, you may not be thoughtless... at that time you have to just watch your thoughts, but don't get involved into them. You will find gradually as the Sun rises the darkness goes away, and the Sun's rays go into every crevice and every part and makes the whole place lighted. In the same way your being will be completely lighted but if you put in an effort at that time, or try to stop something within you, or try to give it a bandhan, it will not. Effortlessness is the only way to meditation. But you should not be lethargic about it... you should be alert and watch it. The other side could be people just doze off... no, you have to be alert. If you doze off nothing will work. That's another side of it, if you are lazy about it nothing will work. You have to be alert and open... absolutely aware... completely effortless, absolutely effortless... if you are absolutely effortless, meditation will work the best. Don't think of your problems at all... whatever chakras you have, anything... just expose yourself. See when the Sun shines all the nature exposes itself to the Sun... and receives the blessings of the Sun effortlessly, it doesn't put in any effort... it just receives itself. When it receives the Sun rays, then the Sun's rays start acting, and activating. In the same way the All Pervading Power starts working... you are not to manoeuvre it... you are not to do anything about it... just be effortless... 4 July - August 2009

7 Sahaja News absolutely effortless... don't take any names, do not bother if your Agnya is catching, this is catching, that is catching - it is working out! It will go on working as long as it can, and it will do the miracle that it has to do... you don't have to worry about it, it knows its job. But when you put in an effort, actually you create a barrier for it. So no effort is needed, be absolutely effortless and say let it go, let it go, that's all... no mantras to be chanted... in case it's impossible then you can take my name, but there is no need even. When you put your hand towards me that's the mantra... is sufficient, this gesture itself is the mantra. You see there is no need to say it more... but with the thought in the mind, the emotion should be there... we have now spread our hands to that, and it should work. When this emotion is absolutely complete... there is no need to say any mantra, you go beyond it... so one has to be absolutely effortless, absolutely effortless... that is what it is. Meditation is for your own ascent... is for your own capital gains, that you have to have... but once you get into it, you also achieve your powers... like, you become a Governor, you get the powers of the Governor. At this time you don't have to think about anybody else, you are not to put your attention to anybody else, but just receive it... just receive it. Do not think of any other problem, but that... that you have to be effortless... absolutely effortless. It would work best on the people who are just receiving it. You have problems, that's why you are here... but you cannot solve them - they are to be solved by Divine Power. This must be understood fully, that we cannot solve our problems. It is beyond us... to solve our problems. So, leave it in the hands of the Divine Power, and expose yourself effortlessly... absolutely effortlessly. Sit in comfort and... properly, with both the feet on the ground, with both the hands relaxed like this... be comfortable, you should not be uncomfortable at all... be very comfortable, because you have to sit for quite some time... and you try to put your attention to me, within yourself... if you can... to my Kundalini, if you can. You can come into my Kundalini... this should be done... just like this... the hands should be like this straight. So 'effortlessness' is the key word... absolutely effortlessly... whether you are meditating before me, or before my photograph. May God bless you! July - August

8 Turning Point ( In this chapter, we try to bring out Shri Mataji's rare and landmark speeches which, in a sense, constitute a turning point. Accordingly, in our last issue on 'Sahasrara Day Special', we had carried two remarkable talks 'You Have to be in Nirvikalp' and 'The Joy of the Absolute'. Similarly, this issue being 'Guru Puja Special', we are publishing here two very important lectures on the significance of Guru Puja and Her advice on how to achieve the Gurupada. The purpose of a Sahaja Yogi's life is to evolve as a Guru. Let us derive the inspiration and insight into the ways and means as given out in these expositions. Ed) 6 July - August 2009

9 Today we have had to spend a little more time than normal to get to the stage where we could really worship the Guru. When we worship our Guru, we have to know actually we are trying to awaken the Guru Principle within ourselves. It's not only that you are here to worship your Guru; you may worship many-a-times, maybe the vibrations would flow, maybe that you might get filled with that and you feel elevated, nourished. But this nourishment has to be retained within ourselves, so always remember then, whenever you are worshipping any principle outside, you are trying to worship your own principle within yourself. Within us as you know, in all of us there lies the principle of Guru. It's very interesting to notice the Guru Principle being drawn beautifully round the Nabhi chakra. We never see any chakras connected with the Guru Principle. You see Nabhi, and around is the Bhavasagara. So this Bhavasagara which is the Ocean of Illusion cannot be the Guru. So there are hidden chakras within this Bhavasagara within us, which are to be awakened and to be brought to light, to be manifested. Swadisthan is the chakra which gives you, first and foremost thing, is the creativity. A person who is a Guru has to be creative by nature. If you are not a creative person you cannot become a Guru. For example, you are faced with disciples with whom you have to converse: you have to create a word of divine magic to impress on the disciples or the people who are attracted towards you as Guru, to show that you have much more divine magic than them. If you are a very mundane type of a person, very ordinary, cannot create a beautiful couplet or a beautiful sentence, or a humour or a joke, or a beautiful painting or a beautiful tapestry or a beautiful house; if you lack in creativity you will lack in your Guru Principle, because a Guru has to create out of ordinary people something extraordinary. He should be able to create a new personality out of an old personality which is decayed. So the first principle you have to understand within yourself, that you should be able to create a new personality in a person. So how do we do it? Of course you have got powers to July - August

10 Turning Point raise the kundalini, you have got powers to cure people, you have got powers to talk big or talk small. Despite all that, if you cannot create a new personality out of the persons with whom you are dealing, then you are not a Guru. And the new personality has to be a special personality of very unique combination of compassion and dynamism. So it is important that in your creativity you have to use the energy of compassion. You can only mould people through compassion and never through anger, never through suppression, never through showing off your powers of gurudom. Unless and until you handle the situation and the personality very carefully, showing all the respect, showing all the concern and all the love for the person whom you are giving realization; just showing off that you are a great Guru, it will only create a kind of a fear about you, and after some time people would not like to see your face. So the most important thing about Guru Principle is that you have to create. Many people get realization, all right, they get realization and then they stay in some ashrams maybe. They come to pujas, they listen to music, they may dance, they laugh, they're collective; but still their Guru Principle is not awakened unless and until they have created many, many more Sahaja Yogis Sahaja Yogis. So the vision of a Guru should be, How many Sahaja Yogis I am going to create? How am I going to use this creativity to create more Sahaja Yogis? So the basis or the essence of the Swadisthana chakra, though is aesthetics, the force and the energy of Swadisthana chakra is attention. If you have a wobbly attention, if your attention is one minute here, one minute there; if you have an attention by which you just can criticize others and cannot see your own faults; if you have an attention by which you show people that you are a frivolous, nonsensical person, then your Guru Principle is wasted. It is the effort of Sahaja Yoga that is wasted, and your Guru's job is also wasted. Minimum of minimum, first the attention has to be pure. But pure attention doesn't mean harshness, it doesn't mean asceticism, it doesn't mean disciplining your eyes like a blinkers of horse, but in all freedom your attention to be concentrated. Where do we pay our attention the most? If we are honest we can think on human level we pay our attention to our children, to our wives, to our husbands, to our family, to our relationships which are with love. So when your attention has got the compassion and the love for another person, then only you can work out the realization of others. If you have to work out the realization of others, it has to be an intense love for another person. If you don't have that intensity, you are just moving your hands raising the Kundalini because your Mother has given you powers, and it's finished off. That intensity of love can only give you success with your pure attention, and I think the pure attention can only love. Impure attention cannot love, because all impure attention is self-oriented, I-oriented. They are not self in the sense spiritual-oriented. But the idea that spirituality is love, it seems to be a new idea for many people. They think spirituality means a person who is just absolutely dry like a beanstalk and nobody can go near that person, nobody can communicate with such a person because that person is too pure. If the soap cannot cleanse your body, what's the use of having the soap? If the soap is afraid to come near you, then it's better not to be called as soap. So we come to the point that the creativity if it is our aim, lakshya, for that the attention we should purify, and to be purified with love, with compassion. And the same attention when it is filled with love and compassion it gives you dynamism, it gives you strength, its untiring zeal you get. And the joy of seeing your 8 July - August 2009

11 Sahaja News reflection into another person is very beautiful. No words can describe it. Actually when you give realization to another person, what you try to see is your image in that person, as if out of an ordinary glass you are making it into a beautiful mirror and then you want to see that. That is how you create, you create your own reflections and through the cleansing of the reflectors, once you understand that without creativity this Guru Puja is useless for you. If you just live for yourself, for your family, for your husband or just for an ashram, then you have not expanded at all, you have not done any duty towards your Guru. Of course as soon as you take to this principle you develop so many qualities within you. The first you develop is wisdom, because you realize where you are going wrong, why this is not working out, why there's a problem, why your creativity doesn't act. It becomes evident to you, obvious to you and you start learning; and wisdom comes to you, and you understand. Wisdom is when you realize your mistakes and rectify them, and with that you develop the balance, the understanding how to deal with another personality. I always tell the story of a car, that there's an accelerator and also there's a brake. You have to use first both of them without understanding what is it, still you are not a Guru, you are not even a driver. Then when you know then you automatically drive; then you are a driver, but still the master is sitting behind. So now you have to become the master, and when you become the master you can balance the vehicle and you can see the driver, accelerator and also the brake. And you can manage it just in a very simple manner. So this Guru Principle is limited, and goes on increasing its limitations like the horizon. As you start growing into more creativity, the more people you create. And the central point of this one is the Nabhi in the centre, which like a big pivotal point on which the whole of this movement takes place. Nabhi chakra as you know, you get it from your mother to begin with. So a Guru has to be the mother, he must have the qualities of the mother not the modern mothers, but in the real sense of the word: that a Guru has to love her children and has to have strength and courage to correct her children. And the earnest desire should be to put the children onto proper lines to guide them and to help them to rise. So the first nourishment comes to us even when we are in the womb of the mother, through the mother; and so you are the mother though you may be a man or a woman, but in quality you are the mother. And whatever you think or whatever you do has an effect on the child. The way you behave, the way you talk, the way you live, everything has a bearing on the development of the child. In the same way when, supposing a Sahaja Yogi who is trying to give realization is a hypocritical person, if he's a wrong type of a person, if he does not respect his own Guru, the children behave the same manner and they take to wrong things much faster, they see to wrong things first. So you have to be perfect in your behavior towards your own Guru, you have to respect your own Guru in a full way. Complete surrender to your own Guru is important; then they will see how you have treated your own Guru, and that is how they will treat you. If you don't treat your Guru with that respect, with that understanding, with that surrendering, then don't expect your children or the people whom you are guiding are going to respect you. So this Guru Principle within us has to be like a great sage or a great seer, who is above the normal mundane people and sees the things in a proper perspective, and delivers the proper understanding of all this perspective he sees, to his disciples, doesn't give them distorted or wrong ideas. Now one may say that, Mother, how is it July - August

12 Turning Point that the love we can express and also tell them the truth? You have to look after the benevolence hita. You have to look after the benevolence of your disciple, which may appear that he may not like what you are telling that person today; but a day will come when he will think, thank God your Guru has corrected you and has put you on the right path. If the goal of the disciple is not to ascend, is just to be there for some sort of a purpose, then it's better not to have such disciples, not to have anyone of this kind who are not there for their own ascent, but for other gains which are absolutely of no avail. This question arises sometimes, how to love? It's a very funny question that we don't know how to love human beings. We can love our things, we can love our useless things, we can love some sort of a beautiful scenery because it gives us joy. We can love some nice restaurant because you can get good food there, or some sort of a thing which is of a very baser nature. But love for love's sake is this, that when you really love for love's sake then you try to put or implant that love into somebody else, that you make another person as loveable as you are. So the whole system becomes different if you understand that we have to base all our progress, all our love, all our movements, all our behavior, all our understanding on love. Otherwise your Guru Principle is extremely weak, and after some time you will find you are just standing out of the shores of Sahaja Yoga. Anybody who is attached or biased and has conditionings cannot become a Guru, cannot; because even if he becomes, so-called, all those things will be reflected in that person. Or say if he is very full of ego, thinks no end of himself and thinks that, I am a great Guru, that ego also would be expressed. Supposing such a Guru talks too much, also they find the disciple the same style. If he is a quiet type you find the disciple the same style. So we reach a conclusion that first we must develop our own Guru Principle. If we cannot develop that, it is no use doing any Guru Puja because it is just temporary, it's not going to help you much, unless and until you really decide that you are going to nourish and develop and establish your Guru Principle. So today, when you are worshipping Me as the Guru, you must know that any amount of My talking, any amount of My giving you blessings or anything is not going to work out, unless and until we really develop our own Guru Principle, and the depth. Because a Guru makes his disciple cross the Bhavasagara; he's like the boat who takes his disciples and crosses with love and with proper direction. That has to be with all of you. As it is you are all realized souls and as I have told you, you are all angels. But if you do not establish your Guru Principle, you know of angels how they have fallen down and gone forever. So be careful: it's easy to be an angel but difficult to maintain it. It is difficult to be the Gods and Goddesses, but easy to maintain it. So all of you are here; I'm very happy to see that you have come to worship Me as your Guru. And I would expect that My children are after My own image. That My image should be such that My children should feel that oneness with My image, and I should be a proud Mother of so many children who have come from so many countries. 21 Sahaja News Maha Shivaratri Puja (Maha Shivaratri Puja on 15th Feb 2004 at Pune constitutes a turning point, so to say, since that was the last talk by the Holy Mother in India before She went silent. It was also equally significant that during the Maha Shivaratri Puja, She talked about the essence of Guru tattwa, which virtually sums up all that She has revealed about the significance of the Guru principle. Shiva is the Guru and the Guru is the Shiva. It is the highest principle, it is the correcting principle, it is the balancing principle, and it is the principle of all principles in the creation. And this principle cannot be attained by efforts. It is such a small talk, but so very significant in the Sahaja pantheon, like the icing of a cake. Let us all try to enjoy and absorb, as much as we can. Ed) Pune, India 15th Feb 2004 This is a subject which you can only explain in Hindi language, which says that this Gurupada you get from somebody else. But that somebody else is itself, is endowed with, the power, the power of peace of mind, to begin with, and also the power to overcome all kinds of earthly problems, mental problems, physical problems. All these problems you can solve through your mental balance and mental blessings from your Guru. When you become the Guru, you yourself have the power, to bless others. With your blessing power you can create a Guru out of many. And once the Guru is created and there is a Guru, who has this power, it's very satisfying and is very ennobling. The satisfaction is so much that you don't want anything. This is the power of Shiva. You have seen Shiva, doesn't have much clothes, He doesn't decorate Himself, He is just sitting in meditative mood, all the time. He doesn't want anything. He's so satisfied with Himself that He doesn't want anything. And that is the power you get after the Self-realization, if you have a Guru, and Guru of that level and calibre. One should not try to become a Guru. That's very, impractical. If you try to become, you'll never. It has to come to you automatically, without any asking, without any effort. So July - August

22 Maha Shivaratri Puja the only way you can get to it is through Dhyana. Dhyana is meditation. When you meditate, just meditate, and meditate, do not ask for anything. Meditation itself gives you that instrument which can bear this great power of the Guru. And then you automatically, you give this power to others; you don't have to work it out. Just in your presence, people can get this power of complete satisfaction. And there is salvation, for you and for others. So all the problems which are faced for the journey of ascent are finished and you are drenched in the bliss of heavenly peace and joy. That's why it is called as Kaivalya, means only, only the blessings. See that means there is no other word to translate it. There's no other way of explaining it. It's a state. It's a Stithi. It's a state, in that state you have to rise and you know that you are in that state. It's a very remarkable thing, that once you reach that state you don't have to ask for anything. It's all there, and you are so satisfied. I can go on talking about this special power but I think whatever I have said please meditate on that. And you are all capable of reaching that state. And achieve the GURUPADA. Question arises, how do we really achieve it? Shri Mataji had made it clear in Her revealing discourse on the Maha Shivaratri Puja, reproduced at page 19, that If you try to become (the Guru), you will never. It has to come to us automatically. How then do we approach this profound question? Let us consider an anecdote, from the life of Shri Adi Shankaracharya. That may perhaps provide a useful insight. Legend has it that amongst the illustrious disciples of Shri Adi Shankaracharya, there was a humble follower, Annandagiri by name, a washerman by caste, who was totally illiterate. In those days, all the dialogues between Shri Adishankaracharya and his disciples used to be in Sanskrit which was totally alien to this 'dhobi'-the washerman. He could, therefore, never understand what the Guru was teaching to his great disciples. Nor would he try to go anywhere near the constellation around the Guru. He used to be just absorbed in the daily chores such as cleaning of clothes, washing the utensils and keeping the surroundings, spick and span. He used to do his daily duties with utmost care and sincerity, always counting his blessings that he was in the service, albeit, in a humble capacity of such a great Guru. Years rolled by and the dhobi's dedication deepened with each passing day. Then on a designated morning, Shri Adi Shankaracharya was to deliver a discourse on a very intricate and deep subject of Vedanta. His disciples had gathered and the discourse was about to begin. Suddenly Shri Adi Shankaracharya announced that the day's lesson would be taken by the dhobi-the washerman. Lo and Behold! The humble dhobi prostrated before the Guru, faced his audience, and in chaste Sanskrit delivered a great exposition, to the astonishment of the assembled luminaries! Literally overnight, the dhobi became the Guru! He was named Thodakacharya by Shri Adi Shankaracharya. We achieve the Gurupada only through the grace of the Guru. We do not need any scholarship, any position or even any speciality. We only need that washerman's heart. May all of us seek that from the Holy Mother. And may the Mother make us just like that simple washerman, content to be in whatever station we are and always reflecting on the Guru's teachings. Jai Shri Mataji! July - August

Ujjain has been highlighted on the world-map of Sahaja Yoga on 7th June 2009 when the road leading to the meditation center was named after our most beloved Mother. The road in front of Sahaja Yoga main center Sethi Nagar, Ujjain is named as 'H.H. Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi Marg'. Our Holy Mother's image had appeared on the stone slab kept for inauguration, and that after a Havan performed on 15th June for propitiating the rain Gods, Ujjain which has endured very heavy dry spell, received revitalizing rains. National Sahaja Yoga Seminar (North India): 2009 By grace of our Holy Mother, National Sahaja Yoga Seminar (North India), 2009 was conducted at Haridwar from 18th Jun 2009 to 21st June For the first time in the history of this seminar, the number of Sahaja Yogis crossed the mark of 5000 and the total registered Sahaja Yogis were The seminar had an international touch with 32 yogis from Nepal joining the Indian brothers and sisters The Seminar shall be remembered not only for the large number of attending Sahaja Yogis but also for the blessing of the river Ganges flowing alongside the seminar site, where yogis not only took bath on all four days but also did foot soaking. There were nearly 200 volunteers coming from every part of Uttrakhand and becoming instruments in making arrangements for the seminar. After Hawan on 18th June in the evening, the first day started with morning meditation at 5.30 AM led by Sh. Srichand of Rajasthan, followed by Shri Mataji's audio talk of Ramnaumi Puja. The morning session started at AM with inauguration of seminar by collective singing of Swagat Gan in praise of Shri Mataji followed by lighting of lamp by Chief Guest Sh. 29 Sahaja News One Day Seminar at Satara ( Maharashtra) aspects of spreading of Sahaja Yoga and informed about the constitution of National level committee for this auspicious work for providing guidelines and other necessary support. He called upon Gen Kapoor, who is the Chairman of this committee, to brief the audience about the functions of this committee. The evening session saw a plethora of bhajans, dance, drama and music from children as well as Yogi & Yoginis. Everyone started to clap and dance and the whole atmosphere became joyous and merry. 21st June (Morning session) : The morning meditation was led by Sh. S K Bahl, Coordinator of Noida along with light music. The morning session was devoted to importance of collectivity in Sahaja Yoga, responsibility and duty towards Sahaja Yoga and Sahaja Protocols. Sh. YP Singh of National Trust spoke about the importance of collectivity at home and in the Sahaja centres. It was followed by a Question-Answer session where different questions were answered by Sh. Suresh Kapoorji, Sh. YP Singh and Sh. MN Jha. 21st June (Evening session) : The last session of the seminar started with Maha Mantras. All our dear musicians, Deepakji, Dr. Rajesh Universe and Mukhi Ram sang and the whole atmosphere was charged with jubilation. There was also a viewing of a video film The Vision in between. The evening concluded with thanks giving and exchange of token gifts to all participating musicians. By the grace of H.H. Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi, one day seminar was organized at Satara District, under the guidance of Maharashtra Committee, on 28th of June, The basic idea was to update the Sahaja Knowledge to all the Sahajis coming from rural areas. The Nirmal Vidya in the form of various speeches including practical demonstrations was covered to all the seekers. Many new seekers who participated in the seminar appreciated the benefits of Sahaja Knowledge. The topics which were discussed as per the local requirements were: meditation and ascent, spreading of Sahaja Yoga, collective development, feminine power and health, balancing, protocol and exchange of vibrations. Spreading of Sahaja Yoga was stressed to a greater extent and many Yogis were motivated for their active participation in Public programmes. The new centres are being started in interior rural areas. For their benefit, a brief procedure on the management of new centres was also covered in the seminar. The effective use of audio visual presentation and speeches during programmes were introduced to many coordinators who attended the seminar. About 600 Sahajis were present in the seminar. It concluded with a question/ answer session. Sahaja Yoga Awareness Programme (Chetna Yatra) in Rajasthan For the second year running, Sahaja Yogis of Rajasthan under the worthy leadership of Shri Sri Chand Chaudhary, Shri Bhagwati Singh and their worthy lieutenants organised an ambitious Sahaja Yoga Awareness Programme throughout the length and breadth of the state of Rajasthan. Mission Transformation Pune Sahaja Yoga District Committee has Launched Mission Transformation 2010 for the overall development of Sahaja Yoga in Pune District. The Mission was explained to all yogis in Pune Seminar on June 7th The period of Mission is from June -09 to Dec-10. Mission: Double the Collective of each sub-center by Dec 2010 One Public Program Activity per sub-center per two months One Mini- Seminar Activity per sub-center per two months 100 Sub-Centers in Pune District by Dec 2010 Development of 500 Yuvas in Pune District (Min 5/10 per sub-center) by Dec 2010 This mission has created a great drive to spread Sahaja in Pune District. In One month after launching the mission, 45 + public programmes were organised and new seekers got their realisation. Every week there is atleast ten programmes. The public programmes are generally organised in public places, gardens, temples, schools and corporate institutions. Through these efforts six new meditation centres have been opened over and above the existing 68 centers. 28 July - August 2009

31 Sahaja News In addition, one day seminars were organised for new comers in the areas like Junnar, Ambegaon and Khed where on 14th June at Narayangao, 200+ Yogis attended the seminar. The Seminar covered information about Importance of Collectivity, Prachar Prasar Activities, Collective leadership, Protocols and guidelines for Yuva Shakti. For Pimpari-Chinchwad regional Collectivity, there was a similar seminar organised on June 21st in which 150+ Yogis attended. The Seminar gave the valuable information about Chakras & Nadis, Treatments, Prachar Prasar Activities, Collective Leadership, Protocols, etc. For the development of the Yuva, there is a Yuva Meeting at Pune Main Center on every 2nd Sunday. The meeting is focused on Sahaj Knowledge, Vibratory Awareness, Prachar Prasar Activities, Career Development, Personality Development, Art & Culture. Self Realization Programmes at Ahmedabad Sahaja Yoga Propogation Oracle India Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore A stress management workshop was organised for three days in Oracle India Pvt Ltd, BG Road, Bangalore. Around 80 working professionals took their self realization. Panel of speakers included Mr. Vasanth Upadhya, Mr. Manoj Kandoth, Mr. Ravi Bhatnagar and a few more. Response was positive from all the new comers and they felt the change in their physical system. Around 40 seekers settled for the final day session. This is still continuing as part of 18-weeks Sahaja Yoga workshop in Oracle. Let us pray that the Holy Mother takes them all under Her wings. Sahaja Yoga Programme in Ladakh With the blessings of our Divine Mother, Sahaja collectivity of Ahmedabad put up a stall during Exhibition (namely Vacation 2009) in the city from 22nd May to 1st of June The stall was visited by about ten thousand people during these 11 days and about one thousand seekers sat down for meditation and self realization at a specially arranged and decorated space at the stall. Most of the people felt cool breeze at the Sahasrara and felt peace even at the crowded and noisy atmosphere of the exhibition. This was the third year in a row when such a stall was put up. Mrs. Renu Sharma, a school teacher from Bangalore, was in Ladakh in June 2009 and conducted several programmes in the schools, colleges and ITBP establishment. It may be noted that her efforts are really commendable in that all the students and teachers are Lamas of Ladakh region who are ardent followers of Budhism. It is only Param Pujya Shri Mataji's all powerful, all pervading power of love that has made this impossible possible. It is also interesting to note that her husband Colonel Sharma who is heading a Batallian in Leh has similarly introduced Sahaja Yoga in his Unit where people in hundreds have adopted Sahaja yoga as a way of life. Realisation was given to about 100 teachers and follow-up programme was also conducted. Realisation Programme conducted in the ITBP auditorium with a 70 mm theater-size screen on which Mother's video was displayed to about 250 Jawans' families and officers' wives. 33 Questions & Answers (Starting with our May-June issue of Sahaja News, we have introduced a new chapter called 'Questions & Answers'. It has been our experience in seminar after seminar to come across so many versions of even the basic techniques such as taking Bandhan, Shoe-beating, Allah-ho-Akbar, etc. This creates confusion in the minds of many, which gets compounded as we go further away from the epicentre of Sahaja Yoga in the metropolis' to the far-off places in rural India. People get really confused. Fact of the matter is that almost all the techniques including Bandhan had undergone some amount of evolution, picking up changes along the way, and very few people are aware of the whole story, far less the latest position. It is in this background that a conscious decision has been taken to deal with the common questions and provide authentic answers. To that end, we have nominated a panel of experts, so to say, headed by Shri VJ Nalgirkar who, as many of you will be aware, had been with our Holy Mother for very many years and had maintained copious notes of Her instructions/advice and observations. We sincerely hope that this will help our brothers and sisters in clearing their doubts. You may feel free to ask questions and we will try our best to provide you the answers. Jai Shri Mataji! Ed) Humble Suggestion Clearing should be done from the heart. It should not be a mechanical process. It should be done with the faith and understanding that the Mother has given us these techniques, which have to work. Standing on that faith and remembering the Guru in the heart, we should very reverentially work out the techniques. And then, these will work wonders. Candle Treatment 1. What is candle treatment? Is it for all the channels and Chakras? What is three candle treatment? Please explain the procedure. Candling is for clearing the left side and/or left chakras. Procedure is as follows: (a) Sit (preferably on ground) in front of Shri Mataji's photo. The photo should be kept at a proper place and height. Keep a candle or deepak lighted in front of the photo. Take bandhan. (b) Keep left hand towards photo. Keep the burning candle near and in front of your left hand finger tips. Keep the right hand on the ground. One may take mantra of left channel and/or the affected chakras of the left hand side. (c) Take a candle of proper length duly lighted. The burning candle should be moved up and down on left side, crossing Agya chakra to the end of the channel. The same can be done by another person from backside. While doing this, one may take the mantra of left side i.e. 'Shri Mahakali- Bhairabh'. (d) Further, as required, the burning candle should be rotated clockwise from front over the affected chakras on the left hand side. The same can be done by another person from backside rotating the candle anticlockwise. One may take the mantra of the chakra being treated. (e) For Agya chakra specifically, one should hold the candle in such a way, approximately six inches away from the eyes so that one can look through the flame at the vermillion mark, Bindi, of Shri Mataji in the photo. This is to be done till one feels the Agya chakra is cleared out. (f) One more burning candle of proper height may be kept near the left Swadhishthana behind/ at the back on the ground. This can be kept while doing above actions at (a), (b), (c) and (d). This is called Three Candle Treatment. (One in front of photo, one behind near left Swadhishthana and one in front or moving up and down). This is done for severe left side problems. Paper Burning 2. What is paper burning or slip burning? For what kind of problems should we apply this? What is the correct procedure of doing this? First and foremost, paper burning and slip burning is the same. For one, this is an omnibus solution for all types of problems - one's own, relations, friends, neighbours and also pertaining to one's own chakras. The procedure is as follows: (a) Take bandhan to self. Take a blank piece of paper. Give seven times bandhan to it. Write the name or the problem on this paper. Fold it and keep in front of Shri Mataji's photo. Give bandhan to it. Keep for min 15 minutes at least. (b) Take bandhan to self. Take the paper. Hold it by a fork. Go to open area or terrace and burn the paper holding the fork in hand and without looking at the flame directly. While burning, it should be held over a place such that the fallen ashes can be flushed directly into the drain. (c) If no open space or terrace is available, one can do the burning over the toilet and flush the ashes. (d) Wash your hands under the tap. Take bandhan to self in front of the photo. String Knotting 3. What is string knotting? Please explain the correct procedure. 31 July - August 2009

34 Sahaja News This is a method to clear left side and specially left Swadishthana chakra. The procedure is as follows: (a) Take bandhan to self in front of Shri Mataji's photo. Take some cotton wool. Spin it by hand into a thick thread/string. Tie seven knots on the string. While knotting each time, take the mantra of left chakras one by one. (b) The knotted string should be soaked in sesame or mustard oil in a bowl. Keep the bowl of soaked string in front of Shri Mataji's photo for minimum ten minutes. (c) Take a long fork to hold one end of the string. Hold the string vertically by the fork over a plate or bowl. The knot of Sahasrar should be at the top. Light the lower end of the string. The flame will travel from bottom to top end. Look constantly uninterrupted at the flame from beginning to end. While looking at the flame, one may take Mantra of left side and left Swadishthan. If catch from false guru exists, one may say additional mantra of Ekadasha Rudra or Rakshasagni. (d) The ashes of burnt string and oil will fall into the plate or bowl. The ashes may be put into a flush such as toilets, terrace drain, etc. while pouring water over the plate or bowl. The plate or bowl can be of any material and should be used for such purposes only. (e) Wash your hands and feet. Offer Pranam to Shri Mataji's photo and take bandhan to self. Marriage By Choice 4. Marriage in Sahaja Yoga is a great blessing. But a great number of Sahaja Yoginis are left out every year. Can the parents of these girls try to seek partners for their daughters among Sahaja Yogis of the same place or far off places? Can the boys and girls, similarly, arrange their own marriage in Sahaja Yoga? Please clarify. In one word, the answer is NO. Shri Mataji has called it 'anti- God activity'. Please go through the excerpts from the Mother's talk, on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, on 11th Aug 84 in London, UK. One of the things I discovered here in the West, that though we have understood the importance of the Muladhara, which is very important, and that unless and until we re-establish our Muladhara fully, we are not going to have the speediest ascent. Despite all that, still there are lingering things you see around - like people start choosing their life partners in Sahaja Yoga. That is not allowed. That is not allowed. You are not to spoil your ashrams, your centres, using them for a marriage - searching society. You must respect. This point you must respect. If you have to marry, then you can find your life partner outside Sahaja Yoga - to begin with. But if you want to marry in Sahaja Yoga, then you should not go on searching people in Sahaja Yoga. It is a very dangerous thing for Sahaja Yoga itself and for you people. That is one thing one should never try to do with Sahaja Yogis. For all practical purposes, you are brothers and sisters and that's why I always encourage marriages between people who belong to another country or another centre." "Most of the marriages which were done like that are very [much more] successful than the marriages that were selected and were done. It's very wrong to do such a thing as to arrange your marriage with a Sahaja Yogi by yourself. It will MARYADAS OF MARRIAGE RAKSHA BANDHAN, 11 AUGUST 1984, LONDON be dangerous. I don't want to say anything, but it won't turn out to be good because it is an anti-god activity, absolutely anti-god. You are supposed to develop your brahmacharya. You are supposed to develop your Muladhara. Instead of that, if you start using a Sahaja Yogini or a Sahaja Yogi for the selection of your married life, it's going to be very, very troublesome. Your Muladhara will not settle down. I mean that's a very bad stroke for your development. For your own sake, for your own pleasures, you should not spoil the name of Sahaja Yoga. That is one thing I have seen, so I would say that today, as it is the day of purity in relationships, let us know that you have to treat each other as brothers and sisters. No such play should be followed. Don't allow your mind to drift into this. Because if you allow, then there's no end to it. As it is, you know how hard it is to bring you back to normal." And I have seen such marriages are never, never successful so far. And even if they are, it is a sort of makebelieve thing. It doesn't give real joy. It's a joyless pursuit. Maybe in one case, it may be successful. That doesn't mean that you should take any help from such difficult things, but have normal marriages which are enjoyable, which have created permanent bonds between people. NB: Lastly, plenty of people have been turned out of Sahaja Yoga for violating protocol of brother-sister relationship. July - August
