Rudolf Steiner s Mystery Dramas and the Michaelic Renewal of Rosicrucianism Summer Conference July 2013 at the Goetheanum

Summer Conference at the Goetheanum At this year s summer conference Gioia Falk s and Christian Peter s production of Rudolf Steiner s four mystery dramas will be performed for the tenth and last time before the main stage is closed for renovation work on the one hand; on the other the Michaelic renewal of the Rosicrucian impulse is a central theme contained within the mystery dramas, and the lectures, plenary discussion sessions and working groups will be focussing on this. Those individuals with overall responsibility for the Goetheanum will be making significant contributions to the theme in the lectures and working groups. There will be simultaneous readings and translations into English, French and Spanish of all performances, lectures and plenary discussion sessions. We would like to warmly welcome you to this year s summer festival and conference at the Goetheanum.

The Michaelic Renewal of Rosicrucianism Rudolf Steiner s mystery dramas are imbued with the spirit of Rosicrucianism and contain essential elements of Rosicrucian wisdom. This is particularly true of the first two plays, which are also closely linked in spirit to Goethe s fairy tale of the Green Snake and the Beautiful Lily. One impulse central to Rosicrucianism is that the secrets of primeval cosmic wisdom are no longer only available, as was the case in pre-christian times, to those individuals who have been thoroughly tested and prepared through a process of initiation in the mystery temples, but that this same wisdom has been transformed in such a way that it can be tested by the human reason found in contemporary science. Rosicrucian knowledge not only addressed the intellect but always spoke to the human heart and hand, too, for any true spiritual insight always wishes to inform and influence both artistic and practical life. At the end of the third mystery drama Rosicrucian development comes to a crucial turning point: a group of spirit pupils familiar with the principle of the super-sensible Michael School that gives the broadest access to the deepest esoteric knowledge are to replace the previous protectors of the temple who were members of the mystic brotherhood. Benedictus, the central figure in the sun temple and main teacher of these spirit pupils initiated the transition, describing the turning point for the temple to the brotherhood in the following way: You my spirit pupils will bring the new to what has become old. The new, the Michaelic element, can now find a beginning: this emerges as a theme of the fourth play, in which the spirit pupils find new fields of initiative in both life and work. The premiere of the fourth mystery drama took place in Munich one hundred years ago, on August ; the Anthroposophical Society had been founded just under a year before. The Michaelic renewal of Rosicrucianism became and
still is an ideal for the members of this society and continues to inform and inspire their initiatives in science, art and practical life. For this reason at this year s conference and festival we, the members of the General Executive Council of the Anthroposophical Society and the heads of the Sections of the School of Spiritual Science as the newly created directorship of the Goetheanum, want not only to speak about the four mystery dramas but also to examine the present and future development of anthroposophy on the basis of the plays. What work, what perspectives emerge today for anthroposophy? How can we all develop a karmic sense for the new impulses inspired by Michael? As the spirit of the age in which we are living Michael relies on individual human beings, on human freedom and on each individual human being as the cosmic eye of the needle. This eye of the needle, or the self-recognition of the I, as found in the seal for the fourth mystery drama, is a cosmic process that is as real and creative as any found in nature but is a free human deed at the same time. The summer festival and conference will address both in thought and deed the question of creative renewal as Michaelic renewal. On behalf of the Goetheanum

This was important in 1910 and has also played a role in the decision to restage the plays.
