King of Kings Lutheran Church Connecting People to Christ Now and Forever 3621 Socialville-Foster Road, Mason, Ohio Rev. John W. Mueller, Pastor ext. 302 or ) Debbie Billman, Director, Worship & Music Ministries ext. 325 or ) Malinda Long-Copland, Administrative Assistant ext. 301) Diane Horvath, Early Childhood Education Ministries Director ext. 304) Welcome to King of Kings! Our prayer is that the Holy Spirit will draw you closer to the living God through your time of worship with us today and strengthen your connection to Christ our Savior. Please refer to the maps at both entrances for location of rooms. A staffed nursery is available for children through kindergarten age. Prayer cards are available just outside the Worship Center (gym). The Education hour resumes next Sunday, January 7, Celebration of Holy Communion at King of Kings + We believe that Holy Communion is a Sacrament whereby we receive, under the bread and wine, the true Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of our sins. Our Lord invites to His table those who trust His words, repent of all sin, and set aside any refusal to forgive and love others as He forgives and loves us (Matthew 6:15). Our gathering together at Jesus table also gives us the opportunity to profess our common faith as one church family (1 Corinthians 10:17). Guests who are members of other LCMS congregations are invited to commune with us. Visitors from other churches, or guests without a church home, are invited to come forward and place your hands over your heart to receive a blessing as you stand with those communing. Children are also invited to come forward with their parents for a special blessing. If you have any questions regarding the Sacrament or your desire to receive it, Pastor Mueller is eager to meet with you. Please feel free to contact Pastor John Mueller at pastor.john@koklcms.org or

Divine Makeover (Isaiah 61:10 62:5) Welcome to our ongoing Christmas celebration worship. Unlike the world that quickly moves on from Christmas, we continue to rejoice and celebrate God s greatest gift in His Servant Son, Jesus. Today we focus on God the Father s willingness to take back His unfaithful bride (rebellious sinners) through dressing her in a new wardrobe of righteousness purchased by the ministry of His Servant Son, Jesus. Let our praises continue as we celebrate our total makeover including a new name (as Christ s ones) because of Jesus, who has made it all possible. Prelude Sunday, December 31, 2017; 10:00 am Divine Service, Setting One, Page 151 Announcements and Greeting Preparation for Worship Musical Interlude Opening Hymn O Morning Star, How Fair and Bright #395 Verses 1 3 Invocation, Confession and Absolution Page 151 Introit Selected Verses from Psalm 98 Antiphon Isaiah 52:10 L: The LORD has bared His holy arm before the eyes of all the nations, C: And all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God. L: O sing to the LORD a new song, for He has done marvelous things! C: His right hand and His holy arm have worked salvation for Him. L: The LORD has made known His salvation; C: He has revealed His righteousness in the sight of the nations. L: He has remembered His steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel. C: All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. L: Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth; C: Break forth into joyous song and sing praises! ALL: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. L: The LORD has bared His holy arm before the eyes of all the nations, C: And all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.

Page 2 Kyrie Page 152 Hymn of Praise This Is the Feast Page 155 Salutation and Collect L: The Lord be with you. L: We pray together: ALL: O God, our Maker and Redeemer, You wonderfully created us and in the incarnation of Your Son yet more wondrously restored our human nature. Give us grace to follow in His steps so that when He returns we may be clothed with the baptismal garment of righteousness and peace; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. The Old Testament Lesson Isaiah 61:10 62:5 (The Lord announces the coming salvation to be established in Jerusalem and proclaimed to the ends of the earth. If God had not taken pity on His fallen creatures, their faith would have been like an unfaithful wife, abandoned by her husband, to live out her days amid the ruins of her wrecked life. However, the Servant Son lived and died to effect reconciliation. God put on Himself and Israel the bonds of marriage, which He will not break.) 10 I will greatly rejoice in the LORD; my soul shall exult in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation; he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. 11 For as the earth brings forth its sprouts, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to sprout up, so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to sprout up before all the nations. 62:1 For Zion s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem s sake I will not be quiet, until her righteousness goes forth as brightness, and her salvation as a burning torch. 2 The nations shall see your righteousness, and all the kings your glory, and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the LORD will give. (to page 3)

Page 3 The Old Testament Lesson (continued) Isaiah 61:10 62:5 3 You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. 4 You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate, but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land Married; for the LORD delights in you, and your land shall be married. 5 For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your sons marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you. R: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. The Epistle Lesson Galatians 4: 4 7 (At a specific, appropriate time in human history, God acted to fulfill His eternal purpose by sending His one and only Son. God takes into His family, as fully recognized sons and heirs, both Jews [who had lived under the Law] and Gentiles who believe in Christ. Christ earned the right for us to call God our Father.) 4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, Abba! Father! 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God. R: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. The Alleluia Verse (Please rise) Page 156

Page 4 Gospel Lesson Luke 2: (The Holy Spirit led a righteous and devout man, Simeon, to faithfully watch for God s promise of salvation [through the Messiah] to be fulfilled. The Spirit led Simeon to recognize that promise as being fulfilled as he identified the 40-day-old Jesus and blessed God for having seen God s salvation in this toddler. The prophetess Anna praised God for the child Jesus and the wonderful gift of redemption that He would now bring.) P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the second chapter. C: 22 And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord ) 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons. 25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. 27 And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law, 28 he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said, 29 Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; 30 for my eyes have seen your salvation 31 that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel. 33 And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed 35 (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed. (to page 5)

Page 5 Gospel Lesson Luke 2: And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from when she was a virgin, 37 and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day. 38 And coming up at that very hour she began to give thanks to God and to speak of him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem. 39 And when they had performed everything according to the Law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. 40 And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of God was upon him. P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Directions are on the STMO Board. Hope to see you there. A Longer Look At The Lessons Continues into January When we take the time to dig deeper in God s Word, the Holy Spirit often leads us to undiscovered treasures. Join A Longer Look At the Lessons Bible study during our Sunday morning Christian Education Hour, 9:45 10:45 am. We meet in the Fellowship Hall where participants have the opportunity to dig deeper into the three Scripture lessons for that Sunday s worship. For each lesson, we ll explore: 1) What does it say? 2) What does it mean? and 3) What does it mean for us? Pastor John and Dr. Bill Polzin invite you to join them beginning January 7. New Sunday Evening Bible Study Begins January 7 Beginning Sunday, January 7, at 6:00 pm, we ll start a new small group Bible study called, The Path to the Cross, by noted teacher and historian, Ray Vander Laan. In the illuminating DVD lessons, filmed at various locations in the Holy Land, we ll look at the intense devotion of God s people and discover how their faith prepares the way for Jesus and His ultimate act of obedience and sacrifice at the cross. This unique Bible study weaves together the Bible s fascinating historical, cultural, religious, and geographical contexts, and reveals unique insights into the Scriptures significance for modern believers. This study is a wonderful way to prepare for the Lenten season. Lessons include: (1) The Way of the Essenes Filmed in Qumran, (2) The Way of John the Baptist Filmed in Machaerus, (3) Into the Desert to Be Tested Filmed in En Gedi, (4) The Last Passover Filmed in Jerusalem, and (5) The Fifth Cup: Our Way of Hope Filmed at Gethsemane. We will be meeting in the Fellowship Hall and all are welcome! Please contact Jane Glandorf or the church office ( ) if you would like to participate or have questions.

Page 10 Church News & Events (Continued) Join Midweek Bible Study Of Revelation January 3 You are invited to an in-depth small group Bible study led by Pastor John which will resume on Wednesday evening, January 3, 7:00-8:30 pm in the Library to discuss the last 14 chapters of Revelation (8-22). The book of Revelation points to the final meaning and the final answer to all that is revealed in the Bible. Revelation reveals and confirms that Christ was prophetically promised and that His incarnation, death, and resurrection happened so that God s creation could be restored to its original glory and righteousness. Your journey through Revelation will give you so much more than a preview of what will happen when Jesus returns. Through God s inspired words you as participant will be challenged to hold fast to the faith (Rev. 2:10) and to complete the mission God has given to His Church. (Rev. 10:11). Bible On Trial Begins January 7 Biblical criticism, ancient historical voices, the illumination of archaeology, the testimony of first-century followers of Jesus Christ -- all these come to bear on the examination of the reliability of the Scriptures. In this Lutheran Hour Ministries study, The Bible On Trial: Beyond A Reasonable Doubt, the case is made that the Scriptures are authentic, dependable, God-inspired and worthy-not only of our full attention but of our complete faith. Attorney Craig Parton leads viewers through relevant points that comprise this important discussion. He asks, Is this book, the Bible, and its contents-reliable? This question has been fiercely debated for centuries-and rightly so. The four DVD sessions with discussion guide address critical views of the Scripture, examines evidence from the ancient world, surveys how archaeology often corroborates the Biblical record and considers the word of those who were either Jesus contemporaries or were closely connected to eyewitnesses who knew Jesus and His remarkable life-well. Join Susan Heitner in the Library at 9:45 am beginning Sunday, January 7.
