1 The Insider A publication of Edgewood Baptist Church A Note from Pastor Kevin October 2018 Dear Edgewood Family, Thank you for all your prayers and cards. As I write this Paige is in surgery. So many of you have walked similar roads. So many have walked even harder roads. I love you all. Your faith and lives inspire me. We exist to LOVE GOD, LOVE OTHERS, KNOW CHRIST, & MAKE HIM KNOWN for the glory of God and the joy of his people Kevin Hollinger Senior Pastor Below is something I wrote after learning of Paige s cancer. I shared it in church recently and I hope it points us to Jesus. On the inside of Paige s and my wedding rings is Romans 12: "Never lacking in zeal. Keep your spiritual fervor In serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, and faithful in prayer." As we pray for healing we are also praying for deeper faith, a firm grasp of the hope we have in Christ, and a chance to share the love and hope we have found in Christ with those we meet on this road called cancer. Cancer. It is just a word until a doctor speaks it to you or someone you love. In an instant everything changes. It pushes everything else out and then draws to itself a whirlwind of emotion. Fear. Worry. Guilt. Grief. They all are stirred up. It makes hearing hard and thinking a great labor. Faith. It is just a word until crisis hits. In an instant it becomes a lifeline, a stream of hope in a desert of despair. It does what only it can do - it takes the power away from that word "cancer." It puts the focus back on God. It silences the why s that come without answers and replaces them with a great vision of the who. (The great I Am, God the Almighty, Lover of your soul). It assures you that God can, and will, carry you through. Grace. The gift of God-empowering faith that would otherwise be drowned in doubt. Grace that brings joy to the road filled with tears. A joy that does not remove the sorrow but comes alongside it and fences it in - keeping it away from places it should not go. October 7 The Power to Encourage Acts 11:19-26 October 14 The Power to Respond to Crisis Acts 11:27-30 October 21 The Truth About the Power of Prayer Acts 12:1-19 October 28 The Triumph of God Acts 12:20-25 November 4 Empowered to Go Acts 13:1-3 Hope. Sure, confident hope anchored to Christ. Reminds you that nothing can separate you from the love of Christ. As a child of God nothing can change your identity or your destiny. Kevin Hollinger 1 October 3, 2018

4 children Shannon Bullock Children s Director It has been a busy start to the fall as the new routines and activities have started. Our fall children s Sunday school classes are up and running and we are getting into a groove. Thank you to all our volunteers and teachers who make our children s ministry possible. Our teachers want to show the love of Christ and instill it in our kids. It is our desire to point kids to God as the main character throughout the Bible. We also want them to understand that God and the Bible is not only for Sundays but for each day and every moment of their lives. I want to share with you what your kids will be learning this year. We have gone with a curriculum called Truth:78 (formally Children Desiring God). Twos and Threes A Sure Foundation by Truth:78 This curriculum teaches children truths about God in simple words and shows them who God is throughout the bible. God is Good. God is big. God is Strong. God is Kingdom Kids Preschool/Kindergarten He Has Spoken by His Son by Truth:78 The New Testament beautifully unfolds the wonder and power of Jesus Christ. This curriculum explores the greatness of God in Christ by noting key themes found chronologically throughout the New Testament. Bible stories are not written out; teachers prepare the lesson through the study of scripture using a list of key themes, opening illustrations, and application questions to acquaint children with a great God who has spoken by His Son. 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd Grade Jesus, What a Savior by Truth:78 Our children (like us) are helpless sinners, deserving of God s eternal wrath. Children need to hear this truth so that they, like us, can turn to the perfect and only remedy the free gift of salvation through Jesus the Savior! Each lesson in Jesus, What a Savior! is designed to present the material, including Bible stories, in a way that proclaims the centrality of the greatness and worth of God. This chronological study on redemption focuses on God s revelation of His Son, Jesus, as the one and only hope for desperate sinners the good news of the Gospel! 4 th, 5 th, and 6 th Grade In the Beginning Jesus by Truth:78 The Bible is one complete true story that progressively reveals God's redemptive plan, which comes to complete fulfillment in the Person and work of Jesus Christ. In the Beginning...Jesus begins with a historical mystery Jesus' death on the cross and asks the questions: "What really happened here?" "Why did Jesus die?" and "Who did it?. To find the answers to these questions, the study goes to the beginning of the Bible narrative in Genesis and then moves chronologically through the Old Testament text as students search for clues that foreshadow the coming of Jesus and His redemptive work on the cross. Special emphasis is given to showing that the Bible is God's story from beginning to end and that Jesus is the key to understanding the story. Parents: Watch for handouts about the children s lessons and some devotions that you can go through at home. 4 students Boston Johnson Student Ministries
5 adults Caleb Community (Senior Adults) We continue to meet on Wednesday at noon in the Junction. September meetings included a presentation by Heidi on the Arrow Prep Academy. We all learned what her heart was for children and Christian education. Then we had a session where we looked at pictures of our parents and tried to match them up. The highest score was 9 out of 21. Well done, Lee Gulke. October will include a time with a representative from Dignity Memorial and then, later in the month, Cascade In-Home Care. In November, we have Trudy Dana coming to talk about her experience writing a book and having it published. If you are available at noon on Wednesday, we welcome you to come join us with your brown-bag lunch. It is a great time for fellowship, prayer, and study. Any questions call or see Randy McCormack. Church Donations While we appreciate your generous donations, please be sure to check in with the Front Office before bringing items (toys, books, etc) into the church. Reminder: Life Chain is this Sunday October 7 th. This is an opportunity to stand up for the pro-life cause. There is a non-denominational group of folks who will be meeting on Sunday from 2-3:30 pm in the Target parking lot on Everett Mall Way and 3rd Avenue SE. worship Edgewood, I wanted to take this opportunity to share with you about a new song we've recently introduced into our worship services. The song is called "Made Alive." Verse 1 I once was dead in sin, alone, and hopeless A child of wrath I walked, condemned in darkness But your mercy brought new life, and in your love and kindness Raised me up with Christ, and made me righteous Chorus You have bought me back with the riches of Your amazing grace and relentless love I'm made alive forever with you, life forever By your grace I'm saved Verse 2 Lord, you are the light that broke the darkness You satisfy my soul when I am heartless If ever I forget my true identity Show me who I am and help me to believe Bridge My sin has been erased I'll never be the same! I appreciate this song for two reasons: The first is it's 80's electronic/pop vibe. It's rife with synth goodness and moving bass lines, which I love. The second (and significantly more important) is that the song declares the truth of salvation as explained in Ephesians 2:1-10: Ephesians 2:1 10 [1] And you were dead in the trespasses and sins [2] in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience [3] among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. [4] But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, [5] even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ by grace you have been saved [6] and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, [7] so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. [8] For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, [9] not a result of works, so that no one may boast. [10] For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. (ESV) I hope and pray that this song will cause you to reflect on the glorious transformation from death to life available by the grace of Christ. -Kaleb Kaleb Willey Worship & Media 6
