2 Page 2 Volume 274, Issue 204 A WORD TO THE WISE R A B B I J AY H. R O S E N B A U M AN RX FOR SUMMER BY DR J Someone once said, hard work never killed anybody, but stress, aggravation and tension surely can sap us of our strength, vigor and health. So, let us take time during the summer months to unwind, rejuvenate and engage in activities and endeavors that will contribute to our physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing in the coming year. Let these be activities that will make a difference in our lives, the lives of family members and loved ones, our community, the Jewish people and our Temple Israel. I, therefore, suggest to you from heart to heart, my own personal Rx for wellbeing. 1. Take the vacation time you are entitled to. An often-quoted survey revealed, that only 25% of people with paid vacation time took the time allotted to them. If you are self-employed or have your own practice, be good to yourself and take time off this summer. The need for time away from one s daily work routine was stressed by Judaism three millennia ago and canonized in the Torah in the Ten Commandments. From our very beginnings as a people, Judaism has commanded us to set aside the Shabbat as a day of rest. Yes, thousands of years before there were unions and labor laws, our people and the Holy understood, that for our physical and spiritual wellbeing, we needed a change of pace; a time to affirm our humanity, connect with family, community and God. The Torah goes on to command us to provide this day of rest even to our domesticated animals. Indeed, we are more than beasts of burden. As Genesis teaches, we are created in the image of God and must treat ourselves accordingly and remember, on the 7 th day, even God rested from His/Her labors. 2. Make added time for family and friends. In our high-tech world of texting, tweeting ing and Facebook, we often neglect to connect on a personal and in-person basis. An is no substitute for a hand shake, hug or kiss. As you know, my service to you, my Temple family and the Jewish people, brings me in contact with people from all walks of life. But, nothing gives me greater pleasure, personal satisfaction or feeds my soul as a day at the beach with my family. Spending time with family is the essence of another mitzvah we find in the Ten Commandments which is, Honor thy Father and thy Mother. Truly, we honor them with the time we share together when we have them and also by spending time with our children and grandchildren. After all, didn t they raise us and teach us to be the type of parents who always make time to spend with their children? 3. Take the time to do something for yourself treat yourself to something special just for you. The Torah commands us Love thy neighbor as yourself. Unfortunately, many people treat others better than they treat themselves. Furthermore, if we do not treat ourselves as we should, how can we expect to treat others as they should be treated? Therefore, this summer, find the time to be good to yourself. That is not being selfish, but rather acting wisely. 4. Do something different. There is a tendency today to over think every and any endeavor or activity. Tradition tells us that the Jewish people standing at Mt. Sinai, when asked by God if they would accept the Torah responded, We will do and we will listen. In addition, with family and work obligations requiring many of us to multitask and only address the immediate and constant need of our lives, there is

3 Page 3 Volume 274, Issue 204 little room or time in our schedules to try something new, different or creative. Let me suggest that this summer, you join with me and members of our Temple Family Saturday mornings 9:30 AM 10:30 AM for our weekly Torah study session and breakfast. I assure you, it will provide you with an added perspective in the way that you look at the World and your lives. 5. Attend our Friday evening Shabbat Services. During the summer, our services which are held in the Chapel, are of a less formal and more participatory in nature. Joining in congregational worship and letting the beautiful music enter your heart is a wonderful way to relieve tension, put the cares of the World and your lives aside and boost your emotional and spiritual energy. 6. Think about ways to help our Temple Israel grow. The future, vitality and impact our Temple has on our families, community and the World is dependent upon your involvement. Temple Israel, for over a century, has set the standard of excellence in Jewish education, worship and the performance of Tikkun Olam for congregations around the World to follow. As we enter this, our 111th year, we must double our efforts at outreach, increase our membership and grow our Temple Family. This can only happen with your personal commitment and involvement. Please reach out to your neighbors and friends and tell them what it means to be a member of our Temple family and ask them to join our congregation. Please provide me with names of prospective members that I can call and personally meet. In this way, in the New Year, that will be here before you know it, we will not only survive, but thrive and fulfill the mitzvah of Hachnasat Orchim, inviting people to become part of our spiritual home. We have accomplished much in this past year. Our programs of excellence have enriched our lives. My heartfelt thanks to the Officers and Board members, lay leaders and you, the members of the congregation that have made this possible. Now as you know, any prescription any Rx, to be effective, needs to be followed. So, please try to incorporate some of these suggestions that I have made to you into your lives this summer. Amy, Michelle, Jordan, Dylan, Ryan, Liam and I wish you, your loved ones and family members a very healthy, happy and fulfilling summer and please know that during this vacation time, I am here for you. Rabbi Jay Rosenbaum, joins with Ambassador Oren David, Ambassador of Israel to the Holy See at a reception in Rome given by the Government of Israel on May 15 th to celebrate the 70 th Anniversary of the founding of the Jewish State and the move of the American Embassy to Jerusalem. Rabbi Rosenbaum said, In addition to the establishment of the Embassy in Jerusalem, an acknowledgment of three-thousand years of history of Jerusalem as the National and spiritual capital of the Jewish People, I hope it will be a dynamic move that advances the peace process.

4 Page 4 Volume 274, Issue 204 P R E S I D E N T S M E S S A G E M A RYA N NA P R I C E First, let me thank everyone who attended our fund raiser Monte Carlo night. The party, coordinated by Marc Isseks and his committee, was a wonderful evening to meet old friends, make new ones, and just have a great time with family and friends. I can t believe that a year has passed since I was sworn in as president of Temple Israel. As a first-year president, you rely most strongly on the officers that serve with you. I want to thank those officers for rising to the occasion and helping me steer Temple Israel for the past year. In the many decisions that had to be made, I always knew I could rely on sound, logical, intelligent, and compassionate advice -- and I did. And of course, the Board of Trustees were always there to offer assistance. For all those who served on our committees that managed our day to day programs, let me again express my gratitude. All these myriad functions and events could not have taken place without all of you behind the scenes. This has been an extremely gratifying year for me as president. With the direction and support of the congregation, we have been able to implement new policies to maintain and support our congregation in the times ahead, building upon our rich heritage while embracing our current congregational needs. We are entering into numerous discussions now so that in the coming year, we can expand on this trend. As a new partner with the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ), we can now take advantage and offer additional, fun programming to celebrate our culture and heritage. Our Rabbi, officers and lay people have already attended the first information gathering program and got a chance to meet and share information with over 20 Long Island Reform synagogues. The information gathered at these events will be brought back to the Temple and integrated into our daily operation, to hopefully make a current, fresh, and evolving religious experience even better, which should be expected from the oldest continuing Jewish congregation on Long Island. Yes. we are relevant! It has been proven that children brought up with a Jewish religious background, by families involved and sharing in their children s cultural discoveries, tend to be more successful, well adjusted, and live happier lives. I look forward to sharing this ongoing, wonderful responsibility with you in the coming year!! From my family---wayne, Jeff, Liz, Rachel, Shawn to yours, have a wonderful summer! See you at the beach club.

Rosenbaum at or via rabbijayrosenbaum@yahoo.com RECOLLECTION I lie enveloped in the counterpane of night, dear Evelyn beside me. My mind flows upstream on the river of our lives, against the one-way reality of time. The warm illumination of memory reveals us at the beginning of our journey together. I recall the sweet discovery of love and of each other and the birth of our children. I feel the intoxication of limitless potential and the boundless ambition of youth. Now, a smile comes as I remember the way it was and cannot be again. I am grateful for our journey together. By: Dr. Albert Levenson Written on the occasion of his 60 th Wedding anniversary

On Friday, June 8th, at 7:30 pm, our choir will present the Cantorial Concert. Our choir members are working hard and enthusiastically on learning musical selections. This concert will be a wonderful and joyful experience for all. I am confident that this project will rejuvenate the spirit of our talented members and put our singers in the spotlight. We hope you will join us at this fun event. We encourage everyone who finds Jewish music inspiring and loves to sing to join this group. In addition to singing, choir is a fun way of expanding Hebrew vocabulary and making new connections. We meet on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month at 7:30-8:30pm in the Chapel, and participate on the last Shabbat service of the month. We are looking forward to greeting you and celebrating Shabbat together.
