DIFFERENT SKIES
DIFFERENT SKIES by NIGHT CIRCUS or MISPLACED ADULTHOOD : A Tale Of Delusion And Despair As One Man Struggles From Youth To A Disreputable Middle Age In Seven Sizzling Chapters! A young man steps out into the world filled with hope and optimism, but his confidence is taken for arrogance; his pride for egotism. He is conflicted but peruses his dream, building a wall of defences around his fragile inner self; a wall that will not survive the push for conformity of those around him. Disillusioned, he seeks solace in the common vices of the time, sinking into depression in the company of other lost souls. But witness to the violence in this underworld, he realises that if he does have a place in this world, it is far from here. Lost and confused he takes to the road, wondering where he is bound, searching for a purpose in life. The small voices remind him of a home life he once enjoyed and he considers abandoning his selfish exile. Lately, he s been suffering recurring dreams of an unrequited love, long lost and once forgotten. He knows he can never be with her again - she made that clear - but perhaps somewhere out there he could find someone else; someone to love him for who he is. Years pass and we find that our eponymous hero has settled down and made a nest for himself in a distant land. His wife loves him and his children are growing up well. Sure, he has a pointless dead-end job, but it puts a roof over the heads and food in the bellies of his family and that, after all, is what matters. As time goes on, the banality of it all starts to weigh him down. He had goals and dreams and ambitions and now finds himself tied to this mundane existence. This wasn t the plan, damnit! Depression starts to weigh on him again and he struggles to find reasons to carry on. But maybe, just maybe, there is somewhere else away from this pain. Some other place where he could have it all; the comfortable life and the hope of a better future. Maybe somewhere out there, beyond the horizon, under Different Skies
FRIDAY KNIGHT His arrogance belies the conflict within Constantly causing chaos, still believes that he can win Broken dreams, forgotten plans, lie scattered all around Forever searching, never knowing what he has found He s polishing his armour - he tries to take control But in the end he ll see - the cost will be his soul "Well that's all she wrote for him" Another day, another dream, another whim But he always seems to find the time Placing his faith in his Maginot Line And so he plays his scene upon the stage of life Never once believing he's the cause of all his strife He sings the same songs every day and always walks away His life is out of tune but he don't see it any way Centre-stage spotlight - he s blinded by the glare Shouting out to the crowd - but there is no-one there "Well that's all she wrote for him" Another day, another dream, another whim But he always seems to find the time Placing his faith in his Maginot Line He never learnt to keep both feet fixed firmly on the ground He s waiting at his crossroads but there s no one else around A fear of mediocrity his only motivation In his life his driving dream to be the new sensation Looks into the mirror - he stares into his wall Another Friday Knight - he knows he cannot fall "Well that's all she wrote for him" Another day, another dream, another whim But he always seems to find the time Placing his faith in his Maginot Line
THE CUTTING EDGE A dark heat, a crowded bar - packed tight from near and afar Broken glass in a pool of beer - tension mounts, taste of fear Gaining space, circle of sweat - no escape, caught in a net Adrenalin surge, pumping vein - steel slips into palm again And we brace to face the cutting edge Another night, another fight, another walk on the edge Hard feel, cold steel, like a razor's edge The world turns, we never learn Hot street, a quiet night - lonely time, no hope in sight Face off alone in the crowd - clenched fists, hearts beat out loud Tense up, time to burn - no escape, nowhere to turn Charge the foe, cut him down - leave him bleeding on the ground And we brace to face the cutting edge Another night, another fight, another walk on the edge Hard feel, cold steel, like a razor's edge The world turns, we never learn Time and again - always the same Playing the fool - playing the game Time and again - crowding my brain Breaking the rules - time and time again And we brace to face the cutting edge Another night, another fight, another walk on the edge Hard feel, cold steel, like a razor's edge The world turns, we never learn
RESTLESS SOUL Laying low Tried to find the reason I'm still alone But I don't know Through my life Racing with the wind, chasing down memories across my mind And the night is a lie Have I the will to make this journey on my own? Have I the will to play this game? I tell myself each night right there when I m alone I m a restless soul and I won t change Lost again A self-inflicted exile on a road That has no end So I roam Searching for an answer, still I just cannot see where I went wrong And the road is my home Have I the will to make this journey on my own? Have I the will to play this game? I tell myself each night right there when I m alone I m a restless soul and I won t change All I see Many smiles on countless faces of old friends And my own family Continue on? Or do I let this selfish journey draw to an end Taking me home? Have I the right to make this journey on my own? Have I the right to play this game? I ask myself each night right there now I m alone I m a restless soul, will I ever change?
DREAMSCAPE The edge of darkness crawls across the sky The setting sun calls my never time I lie awake, I wait for sleep, a chance to dream My conscious fades from me as I enter the machine Distant images, pictures from the past - drifting words, a spell that s never cast Their fate is sealed now, those times we had they could not last Another place, just another time - I couldn't find the words and make them rhyme There s only one way you can be mine - is in a dream I see your face again and again I call your name, but you're not there You're nowhere and why do I care? Another dream fails to resolve And I can't solve the puzzle within my mind I can't find you Caught in my dreamscape - lost again in time Reveal my dream state - can t get you out of my mind I need a dream escape - some way to break out of line I m lost in my dreamscape - I m forever lost You never understood me I couldn't live in your fantasy We never had a chance you see Remember: you and I living a lie Another heartache leading to another heartbreak Remember: I can't recall when I first lost you, what did I do? I can't recall when you stopped loving me but still - you're all I see Caught in my dreamscape - lost again in time Reveal my dream state - can t get you out of my mind I need a dream escape - some way to break out of line I m lost in my dreamscape - I m forever lost You never understood me I couldn't live in your fantasy We never had a chance you see Lost - in my dreamscape Lost - I need a dream escape Lost - in my dreamscape Lost - and I m lost
ALIVE Look into my eyes, what do you see? Frustration, desperation, pain or misery? Don t be deceived, it s not how I feel today Can t wait to break these chains at 3 and ride away Now I m gonna go and let the good times roll And I can be the king - it s good to be the king And now I m alive, just like you re alive And I tell you all right now I feel fine That s right I m alive, just like you re alive And I m telling you I feel fine Sometimes I can t believe where I am today But I can recall all the steps that led this way Is this all I ve become? A cog in their machine? Another dead-end Joe? Or so it would seem Then I get to go to where the good times roll And I can be the king - it s good to be the king And now I m alive, just like you re alive And I tell you all right now I feel fine That s right I m alive, just like you re alive And I m telling you I feel fine Now I m gonna go and let the good times roll And I can be the king - it s good to be the king And now I m alive, just like you re alive And I tell you all right now I feel fine That s right I m alive, just like you re alive And I m telling you I feel fine
TIES THAT BIND Day to day in a life full of distractions It's easy to shut out that voice inside Something is wrong Walls close in and my inhibitions trap me Caught in a cell inside my mind Life still goes on Running scared from facing my fears, I'm too weak to go there I know it's all lies, I can't break these ties I tell myself it's just a phase I have to get over When pressures rise Cling onto the ties that bind Now I've heard the dark voice that I ve been ignoring I m starting to question the demon inside Tearing my soul Through my own weakness I find the path of least resistance And so each day I grit my teeth a little bit harder Is it too late to find me some way from all the ties that bind me? Running scared from facing my fears, I'm too weak to go there I know it's all lies, I can't break these ties I tell myself that it's just a phase I have to get over When pressures rise Cling onto the ties that bind Running scared from chasing my dreams, I'm torturing myself I've opened my eyes could I break these ties? Different skies are calling again, I m longing to see them I'm out of my mind Break free from the ties that bind
DIFFERENT SKIES I need to get away from this day to day - feeling that I'm going the same old way Down a dead-end street, I can't compete against a world that responds to a different beat Another day's over, another night's here I need a new dream to follow There s so much to do but I reach for a beer so it can just wait until tomorrow A noise is drifting up from the room below, my brain is kicking in but it moves too slow A man is trying to reassure someone but I hear his words they come out all wrong Now I'm alert and aware, I want to be there just to tell her there's someone who cares That it isn't all wrong and she can go on, someone still feels strong I feel the anger burn inside but I've got no way to use it There's no point clinging on to your pride if you let the world abuse it If you let the world abuse it Maybe there's somewhere away from this pain Different skies are calling me from this lonely room again Maybe there's somewhere away from this pain Under different skies - calling me again Nothing I can say can make you change your mind don't walk away Tomorrow is another day and I can't stand to watch To watch you die All I know is I want to let go 'Cause I can't keep up with the ebb and flow I can feel the pain though it drives me insane I put my feet on the ground and step forward again Another day's over, another night's here I need a new dream to follow Got so much to do but I can't see it through so it can just wait until tomorrow Just wait until tomorrow Maybe there's somewhere away from this pain Different skies are calling me from this lonely room again Maybe there's somewhere away from this pain Under different skies - calling me again
Simon Hutson Simon is very loud. Really very loud! He does most of the screamy-warbly bits. Dave Foz Forsdyke Dave is also quite loud, but only when hitting things. He also does some screamy-warbly bits. Steve Hall Steve is very loud but only when he's awake. He does all the strummy, twiddly, boomy bits. Special Guests Simon Fox did all the plinky-twinkly bits on Dreamscape Leah Hall did all the girly sing-song bits on Dreamscape Deryn Cullen did all the stringy-woody bits on Under Different Skies
DIFFERENT SKIES by NIGHT CIRCUS The music was mostly written by Steve with contributions from Dave and Simon, and some other splendid people we encountered along the way, namely Simon Fox and Michael Cunningham. The lyrics were also mostly written by Steve, except for Under Different Skies which was written by Simon Fox, and Ties That Bind which was more of a group effort as Dave and Simon reworked Mr. Fox s original words. Drums and Vocals were recorded at Thin Ice Studios, Surrey. Guitars and Bass were recorded at Kaos Kavern, Worcestershire. Engineered, mixed and mastered by Karl Groom at Thin Ice Studios. Produced by Karl Groom & Night Circus. Artwork and design by Dave, Simon and Steve. Brought to you by the letter L.
