2 Third Sunday of Lent Page 2 REFLECTIONS THIRSTING FOR LIFE-GIVING WATERS Especially during the Lenten, Holy Week, and Easter seasons, the prayer texts of the Eastern Church revel in paradoxical images of Christ: the eternal life who is put to death, the host of the supper who is also its meal, the thirsty crucified one with living water streaming from his side. These images flow from the evangelists portrayals of Jesus and from his very ministry, during which he often upset or reversed people s expectations about him or the ways of God. This reversal is at play in today s Gospel, as Jesus speaks to an enemy foreigner who is also a woman beneath his status. In addition he, the thirsting one, shows the woman to be the one truly thirsting. He whose parched lips will say I thirst before he dies is the source of life and life-giving water. Lent calls upon us to dwell on how each of us is thirsting for Christ, and it leads us, ultimately, back to the life-giving waters of our baptism into his Body. REFLEJOS * * * * * * * * * * SEDIENTOS DE LAS AGUAS QUE DAN VIDA Especialmente durante la Cuaresma, la Semana Santa y el tiempo de Pascua, los textos de oración de la Iglesia Occidental se deleitan con imágenes paradójicas de Cristo: la vida eterna que muere, el anfitrión de la cena que es también alimento, el crucificado sediento del que mana agua de vida de su costado. Estas imágenes fluyen de las representaciones de Jesús por parte de los evangelistas y de su mismísimo ministerio, durante el cual muchas veces cambió o invirtió las expectativas que las personas tenían sobre él o sobre los designios de Dios. Esta inversión está en juego en el Evangelio de hoy, cuando Jesús habla con una extranjera enemiga que está por debajo de su condición social. Además él, el que tiene sed, demuestra que la mujer es la única que tiene sed verdadera. Él cuyos labios secos dirán Tengo sed antes de morir es la fuente de vida y del agua que da vida. THE BASICS OF LENT Palm Sunday Lent concludes with Holy Week when, like the early Christians, we prepare for Easter by an intense recollection of the final events of Jesus life: his triumphal entry into Jerusalem (Passion or Palm Sunday), his Last Supper (Holy Thursday), his crucifixion and death (Good Friday) and the discovery of his empty tomb and the experience of this resurrection (Easter). Holy week begins with the Palm Sunday commemoration of Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem that climaxed with a great public demonstration of acclaim. In a prophetic sign mocking the triumphant victory procession of a military messiah on horseback, the humble messiah Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey while people joyfully strewed palm fronds on his path (Mt 21:1-9; Mk 11:1-10; Lk 19:28-40) Our Palm Sunday Liturgy Some of the Church s earliest Holy Week practices date back to ancient celebrations in Jerusalem. Around the year 388, Christians processed with the bishop from the Mount of Olives to Jerusalem bearing palm and olive branches. Our Palm Sunday celebration continues this practice as palm fronds are blessed and the Gospel account of Christ s entry into Jerusalem is proclaimed. Then follows a joyous procession into the Church sanctuary for the Eucharistic liturgy. The main Gospel for Palm Sunday is the account of passion or suffering and death of Jesus taken in a three year cycle from Matthew, Mark, and Luke (John s Gospel is read on Good Friday). This juxtaposition of joyful palm waving and the stark reality of Jesus crucifixion sets the tone for the roller coaster of emotions that the drama of Holy Week evokes in us. As we wave palms and recall the triumph of Jesus final entry into Jerusalem, and then hear the Gospel stories and confront the tragedy of his passion and death, we are invited to enter more deeply into our own connection to Jesus and God s salvation struggle of good over evil, of life over death. Blessed Palms Blessed palms are sacramentals (material objects, things or actions set apart or blessed) and thus are to be treated with reverence. They are blessed and distributed today in commemoration of the triumphant entrance of Christ into Jerusalem. Some of these are burned to make ashes for Ash Wednesday. From Ashes to Easter, Lenten Boxes The diocesan Ashes to Easter Lenten Mission Campaign began on Ash Wednesday, March 1. We invite each family to take a mission box home in support of the missionary works of the Diocese of Austin. Please support this long-standing campaign.
