1 Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church 123 Gilkeson Road pittsburgh, PA (412) Fr. Michael Kallaur fr. Dan Korba On. Frank Dickos Weekly Bulletin INn lancer FG4R GOD, UTI Love NH t ~. Saint Anthony, the Father of monks, was born in Egypt in 251 of pious parents who departed this life while he was yet young. On hearing the words ofthe Gospel: IIlf thou wilt be perfect, go and sell what thou hast, and give to the poor ll (Matt. 19:21), he immediately put it into action. Distributing to the poor all he had, and fleeing from all the turmoil of the world, he departed to the desert. The manifold temptations he endured continually for the span oftwenty years are incredible. His ascetic struggles by day and by night, whereby he mortified the uprisings of the passions and attained to January 17, 2016 the height of dispassion, surpass the bounds of nature; and the report of his deeds of virtue drew 5 uch a multitude to follow him that the desert was transformed into a city, while he became, so to speak, the governor, lawgiver, and master-trainer of all the citizens of th is newly-formed city. The cities of the world also enjoyed the fruit of his virtue. When the Church was troubled by the Arians, he went with zeal to Alexandria in 335 and struggled against them in behalf of Orthodoxy. During this time, by the grace of his words, he also turned many unbelievers to Christ. Saint Anthony began his ascetic life outside his village of Coma in Upper Egypt, studying the ways ofthe ascetics and holy men there, and perfecting himself in the virtues of each until he surpassed them all. Desiring to increase his labors, he departed into the desert, and finding an abandoned fortress in the mountain, he made his dwelling in it training himself in extreme fasting, unceasing prayer, and fierce conflicts with the demons. Saint Athanasius the Great, who knew him personally and wrote his life, says that he came forth from that fortress liinitiated in the mysteries and filled with the Spiritof God." Afterwards, because of the press ofthe faithful, who deprived him of his solitude, he was enlightened by God to journey with certain Bedouins, until he came to a mountain in the desert near the Red Sea, where he passed the remaining part of his life. He reposed on January 17 in the year 356, having lived altogether some 105 years.
2 Hymns ofthe Day Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal Fourth Mode From on high didst Thou descend, 0 Compassionate One; to burial ofthree days hast Thou submitted that Thou mightest free us from our passions. 0 our life and Resurrection, Lord, glory be to Thee. Apolytikion for Anthony the Great in the Fourth Mode Emulating the ways of Elias the zealot, and following the straight paths ofthe Baptist, 0 Father Anthony, thou madest of the wilderness a city, and didst"support the world by thy prayers. Wherefore intercede with Christ our God that our souls be saved. Apolytikion for the Church in the First Mode Save, 0 lord, Your people, and bless Your inheritance. Grant victory to the faithful against the adversaries ofthe faith. And, protect Your people by the power ofyourcross. seasonal Kontakion in the First Mode Your birth sanctified a Virgin's womb and properly blessed the hands of Symeon. Having now come and saved us 0 Christ our God, give peace to Your commonwealth in troubled times and strengthen those in authority, whom You love, as only the loving One. Epistle Reading Prokeimenon. Grave Mode. Psalm ,12. Precious in the sight of the lord is the death of his saints. Verse: What shall I render to the lord for all that he has given me? The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 13: Brethren, obey your leaders and submit to them; for they are keeping watch over your souls, as men who will have to give account. let them do this joyfully, and not sadly, for that would be of no advantage to you. Pray for us, for we are sure that we have a clear conscience, desiringto act honorably in all things. I urge you the more earnestly to do this in order that I may be restored to you the sooner. Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our lord Jesus, the great Shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do His will, working in you that which is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. Gospel ReadilJl 12th Sunday of Luke The Reading is from Luke 17:12-19 At that time, as Jesus entered a village, He was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance and lifted up their voices and said: "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us." When He saw them He said to them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." And as they went they were cleansed. Then one ofthem, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus's feet, giving Him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. Then said Jesus: "Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?" And He said to him: "Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well."
3 Welcome We warmly welcome all visitors and seekers in our midst today, trusting that your experience here will be an uplifting and enriching one. The Greek Orthodox Churches are the ancient and native Christian communities of the biblical world, with centers in the Holy Lands, Syria, Egypt and Asia Minor, and by extension in Greece, Cyprus and throughout the world. Like the ancient Christians, we engage the whole person, heart, mind and all senses in Divine Worship. This experience has been so powerful to seekers in the past that it was often said "We knew not whether we were in heaven or on earth. We knew only that there God dwelt among human beings." (Russian Primary Chronicle) That communion experience of heaven on earth and God in our midst forms the heart of all Orthodox worship. It culminates in the sharing of Holy Communion, which not only unites us with the Divine, but also expresses the deep unity in faith and life between all Orthodox believers. Since Holy Communion expresses that deep unity in belief and practice alike, it is reserved for observant Orthodox Christians. This does not mean, however, that non-orthodox are 'excluded' - rather, the Orthodox choose not to make an external display of unity when actual unity does not exist. While working to restore the full communion that did exist in antiquity, today we offer the sign of the blessed bread at the service's conclusion as a symbolic gift of hospitality and growing unity that is offered to all present. If you would like to learn more about the Orthodox way of life, or have any questions about worship or Holy Communion, please approach Fr. Michael or one of the clergy following services. Thank you for joining us, and again, we welcome you all.
