Thoughts of Rev. David Feltman, Pastor to the Presbytery, Presbytery of North Central Iowa Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, I lost my father suddenly to a heart attack when I was 22 years old. If you have been around me, you have heard me talk about it; it was a defining moment in my life. It was my first real encounter with death and grief. I grieved for a long time. Perhaps the antique tractors in our shed, replicating the tractors of my childhood, are still symbols of my grief. I had hoped in adulthood to go back to the farm and help Dad plant and harvest in the spring and fall. There were those who helped, listened to my struggle, and there were those who did not understand. I soon learned who would walk with me and who would not. It was the laboratory for ministry. Paul writes, Blessed be God... who consoles us in our affliction, so that we may be able to console those who are in any affliction with the consolation with which we ourselves are consoled by God (II Corinthians 1:4). When we served the church in Luverne, Minnesota, the first six weeks, before I was installed, I officiated at six funerals. I was 29. The first 10 months there were 20 funerals. Enlisting a chaplain from the Mental Health Center, he and I started a grief support group, seeking to help folks through grief. Personal grief is complicated, but it does not hold a candle to institutional grief. I just heard the story of a congregation which was struck with a great loss. It crippled them to the place they could not face the future. They could not catch their breath and make decisions which needed to be made. There is no skirting around the suffering of grief. If we are to incorporate this event (the loss, whatever it is*) into our lives, we must walk through the center of our suffering, with our eyes open. We may be tempted to do otherwise to save ourselves from this pain. It doesn t work. (Healing After Loss, Martha Whitmore Hickman July 14 (*my addition).) 11 North Iowa Presbyterian E-News

Thoughts of Rev. David Feltman, continued Every great loss demands that we choose life again. We need to grieve in order to do this... Grieving is not about forgetting. Grieving allows us to heal, to remember with love rather than pain. It is a sorting process. One by one you let go of the things that are gone and you mourn for them. One by one you take hold of the things that have become a part of who you are and build again.... Grieving may be one of the most fundamental of life s skills. It is the way that the heart can heal from loss and go on to love again and grow wise. If it were up to me, it would be taught in kindergarten, right up there with taking turns and sharing. (My Grandfather s Blessings, Rachel Naomi Remen pp. 38 and 145.) There is no doubt much of the energy of mailnline churches is consumed by grief these days. Remember when the community was vibrant? Remember when these pews were full? Remember when the children s choir, or a choir sang? Remember when we would send folks to seminary? It will take the spiritually mature ones to nudge us on, saying, Let s offer the pain to God and see what God has in store for us now. With love in Christ, David Feltman 12 North Iowa Presbyterian E-News

Poor Richard s Almanac by Richard Francis, Stated Clerk, Presbytery of Prospect Hill As you look around the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) you see many different models for leadership and organization. Part of this is due to the greater freedom given to Presbyteries in the last major revision of the Form of Government section of the Book of Order. Part of it is due to the realization that the models we have been using, models that were often derived from secular corporate culture, were not doing what we wanted them to do: support congregations and pastoral leaders in their ministry for Jesus Christ. And part of the change is due to shrinking budgets most Presbyteries can no longer afford several, or even one, full-time professional staff person. What this means is that where a few years ago every Presbytery would have had at least one Executive Presbyter (or sometimes a General Presbyter) and often an Associate Executive or two, you now see a wide variety of titles like Pastor to the Presbytery or Mission Enabler. And, of course, there are Presbyteries, like Prospect Hill, that have chosen not to call anyone to a centralized leadership position by any name. This change began several years ago for us when we decided to move in a more Missional direction. We formed a Task Group to study the issue and ended by adopting their recommendation to eliminate the position of (full-time) Executive Presbyter and move to a part-time Mission Coordinator whose responsibilities would not be administrative but supportive. After a time, we added the administrative role to the Stated Clerk s job description in the hope that the Mission Coordinator would be free to work with congregations on their individual mission and ministry. None of this worked out the way we had hoped, and we ended by eliminating the position of Mission Coordinator. Now we are in the position of re-inventing Presbytery leadership again as we have voted to a) increase our Per Capita apportionment to fund a new part-time position, and b) elect a Task Group to come up with a job description for the new position. Those elected to the Task Group at the April Presbytery meeting are Ruling Elders Rebecca Brown, Bill Crawford and Lorna Peters, and Teaching Elders David Koehler and Dave Ullom. I will staff the Task Group as Stated Clerk with voice but no vote. 13 North Iowa Presbyterian E-News

Poor Richard s Almanac, continued We are also in serious conversation with the Presbyteries of North Central Iowa and Des Moines over possible staff sharing when Pastor to the Presbytery Dave Feltman retires from North Central Iowa in June of 2019, but the Moderator Team felt that we need to proceed, at least on an interim basis, to put somebody in place before that. While the Task Group will be looking at the small questions What will we title this position? What will the job description look like? What kind of salary and benefits can we offer they will also be looking at the big questions What do we need as a Presbytery to help you as congregations fulfill your ministry in your place and time? What should that ministry look like? How can we best support, challenge and encourage our pastoral leadership? What are some creative solutions to both leadership and mission? So the Task Group needs your prayers and, eventually, your ideas. This is a challenge but also an opportunity. At the Synod meeting April 29-May 1, Chip Hardwick referred to Isiah 43:18-19: Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? He recalled that when we learn to drive, we are encouraged to check our rearview mirrors frequently, but not to spend too much time looking back, because then we might not see what s right in front of us. That, he says, is what Isiah (and Paul in II Corinthians 5:16-21) is telling us to do: know where you ve been, but don t dwell on it, because God s future is in front of you. What future does God have for the Presbytery of Prospect Hill? We don t know, but we know that it is ultimately in God s hands, and that means that it will be good. Blessings, 14 North Iowa Presbyterian E-News

Grace and Peace to You! A Word from Your Moderator On April 29th I had the honor of commissioning Charlie Flick to serve as Commissioned Pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Albion, IA. It was a day of joy! We had four sermons in the service... but they were all thoughtful expositions of scripture, and encouragements to Charlie and the Albion Church as they continue on in ministry. I suppose you can t have a worship service with many preachers and expect there to be only one sermon. This was the beginning of a new chapter in Charlie s life. Charlie has completed our Lay Academy, and served the church in many ways for decades. Now he will serve in a new way, and he will continue to grow and learn and be faithful to Jesus. He preached sermon number four right before the benediction, and hearing his sermon at the end of the service brought me such joy. It didn t bring me joy because it was the final sermon of the day, but because you could sense how much Charlie loves Jesus and seeks to be faithful. It encouraged me in my own faith do I show how much I love Jesus in my sermon, in my worship leadership, in my everyday living? It gives me much to ponder as I seek to be faithful in my own life. As we turn towards Pentecost and the gift of the Holy Spirit, may you sense the Spirit leading and guiding you as you seek to be faithful in your own tasks. Joy, Rev. Sara Hill, Moderator Presbytery of North Central Iowa 15 North Iowa Presbyterian E-News
