The script for the presentations is on the blog. We strongly encourage you to read through it and the Catholic Update background material prior to Sunday. Heifer Project Money: There will be a large container at my desk for the money the children bring in. At some point during your session, a catechist, some children, or the whole class can come to bring their contributions to the big container A LOOK AHEAD 3/10 Session 21: Being Like Jesus 3/17 Session 17: Jesus Loves the Church
2 PASSOVER / THE LAST SUPPER / EUCHARIST MARCH 4, :00 9:10 / 10:45 10:55 Please do the gathering wordsearch 9:10 or 10:55 Get ready to move to Aux Gym. PLEASE BE IN THE AUX GYM BY 9:15 / 11:00. INTRODUCTION THE PASSOVER AND SEDER MEAL Passover Dramatization - The 6 th graders will present a dramatization / summary of the Passover meal and some of the special prayers and customs that take place. Sample Tables After the dramatization, the 2 nd grade will be invited into the cafeteria to visit 5 sample tables that reinforce the drama. Each 2 nd grade class will have two sixth grade tour guides. The 6 th graders will travel through the rotation with that class and present the information for that station. The visits to these tables are quick (3-4 minutes). The children WILL NOT sit down but gather around the table for the brief activity. Each 2 nd grade class will start at a different table and move clockwise through the five tables. We will have parent volunteers to help keep the tables neat and organized. For background information I have included the talking points for each station pay no attention to the number (i.e. you may be starting at Station 3 so your order would then be 3,4,5,1,2): o Sample Table 1 Pillows o o o o Sample Table 2 Traditional Foods Sample Table 3 Bitter herbs Sample Table 4 The four cups Sample Table 5 Matzo bread
3 TABLE 1 Pillows Pillows CD player with traditional music Setup: Place pillows on couches Activity: This station is actually located on the couches in the lobby. Sixth Grader: At this table we will answer the question: Why is this night different from all other nights? We lean on pillows to remind us that we are now comfortable and now we are free. If you have a large class - QUICKLY separate the group in half and have each group take turns sitting on the pillows. For each group say: So Relax, close your eyes and think about all the blessings God has given us. Pause for a few moments for the children to think, then go around the group sharing the blessings out loud. Volunteers: After each class visits, straighten up the pillows
4 TABLE 2 Traditional Foods Trays and small portions of: Brisket / Haroseth / Egg Signs Portion cups, napkins, plastic forks and spoons Setup: Place foods on trays. There will be a table for each food, and a corresponding sign for each table. One volunteer will help at each of the foods. Activity: The sixth grader will present the following information near the BT Spirit Store in the lobby. Sixth Grader: At the tables in the cafeteria we want to show you some traditional foods that are eaten during the Seder meal. The three foods we will sample are: The Roasted Egg which represents springtime and renewal. It also represents the roasted sacrifice that was brought daily to the Jewish temple. Haroset a sweet, pasty, brown mixture made mainly of apples and spices the symbolizes the mortar that our ancestors used to build brick in Egypt. And finally roasted Brisket a main part of the Jewish meal (like our Thanksgiving turkey). Jewish families also use roasted lamb, chicken, veal, or turkey. Now let s go in and try some of the foods. Go into the cafeteria tables and let the kids look at the food and sample them if desired. Volunteers Please straighten up the trays and cups after each class visit 9:00 volunteer When the five classes are finished, please put unused food into the refrigerator in the teacher s lounge for 10:45 to use. 10:45 volunteer - please clean up all the portion cups, discard the food and trash, and gather the materials onto the table.
5 TABLE 3 Bitter Herbs: Trays of pieces of parsley Cups with saltwater Signs with questions Setup: Trays of parsley and cups of saltwater placed around the table Activity: Children gather around table Sixth Grader: At this table we will answer the two questions: Why do we eat such bitter herbs? (Pause) The bitter herbs remind us how hard the Jewish slaves worked in Egypt. Why do we dip our vegetables in saltwater? (Pause) The saltwater reminds us of the tears of sadness that the Israelites shed while in bondage, and the parsley is a reminder that they always had hope for the coming of a deliverer who was Moses, and that new life would begin when they were free people. These foods are actually eaten in small portions during the Seder meal. Would anyone like to try them today? Volunteers Please straighten up the trays and cups after each class visit 9:00 volunteer When the five classes are finished, please put unused food into the refrigerator in the teacher s lounge for 10:45 to use. 10:45 volunteer - please clean up all the portion cups, discard the food and trash, and gather the materials onto the table.
6 TABLE 4 The Four Cups Four signs with pictures of cups and words 5 trays with small paper cups of grape juice. Sign with blessing Setup: Juice will need to be poured into small paper cups. PLEASE ONLY FILL THE CUPS HALF FULL Please put 20 cups (9:00) or 25 cups (10:45) of juice on each tray, consolidating after each class visits this station Signs need to set around the table Activity: Pass out the cups but have the children just hold them! Sixth Grader: Let s remember the meaning of the four cups One Freedom Two Deliverance Three Redemption Four Praise At the end, help the 6 th graders lead them in the prayer: Blessed are you, Lord God, King of the Universe, Creator of the Fruit of the vine 9:00 volunteer When the five classes are finished, please put unused cups into the refrigerator in the teacher s lounge for 10:45 to use. 10:45 volunteer - please clean up all the cups, and gather the materials onto the table.
7 TABLE 5 Matzo Bread Trays of broken matzo Large cloth wrapped matzo Signs with questions Setup: Place wrapped matzo in center of table Place trays of broken matzo around table Activity: Children gather around table Sixth Grader: At this table we will answer the question: Why do we eat matzo bread instead of regular bread? Matzo bread is made without yeast. Yeast is what make our regular bread rise and be soft and fluffy. When the Israelites were freed they had no time to bake the bread because they left Egypt so quickly. They even took the dough and baked it under the hot sun as they traveled in the desert. This bread is a very important part of the Passover celebration. Would anyone like to try them today? 9:00 volunteer When the five classes are finished, please put unused broken matzo into a container provided to be set out again at 10:45. 10:45 volunteer Please start with the container of already broken matzo from 9:00, then break more as needed. After all the classes have visited the table, please put the unused broken matzo in the container, clean up all the trash, and gather the materials onto the table.
8 Volunteers - When the classes have rotated through all the tables, it would be a huge help for 9:00 to put any food items back in the refrigerator as well as getting the tables clean and orderly for 10:45. At the end of the 10:45 session it would be TREMENDOUS help to gather all the materials onto one table (leftover food does need to go in the refrigerator) and wipe down the tables. THE LAST SUPPER AND THE EUCHARIST TODAY 2nd graders come back into the gym and sit in the bleachers.. There will be a dramatization of the Lord s Supper. Following the Last Supper presenation, we have have the presentation on the Eucharist Today. During this presentation:: There will be a pair of sixth graders that will stand in front of each class. They will go through the motions of receiving the Eucharist while the presenter talks through it. After that (time permitting) we will have the kids line up and each class will work on their own practicing how to receive the Eucharist. We will be using mini saltines. We will be practicing how to receive the Blood of Christ on another day.
