This was a part of th clbration, and, if 1Chron. 13, ar takn as fairly chronological, thn this would hav bn part II of th clbration. Part I is moving th Ark from Obd-Edom s hom to th front gat of Jrusalm (which would hav involvd singing and clbration this is 1Chron. 15); and part II would hav bn th clbration which followd, aftr th Ark had bn succssfully placd in its tnt. Now, thr is th altrnativ viw that, at th nd of 1Chron. 16, th original author (not of Chronicls, but of th manuscript which th writr of Chronicls usd) wrot down what h rcalld from this clbration, which would includ songs sung both on th way to th city of Jrusalm and aftr th Ark had bn put in th tnt. I am not crtain that this is all that important of a point, but I am simply making an attmpt to accuratly intrprt th Word of God without making any unwarrantd assumptions. In any cas, somtim during th moving and dpositing of th Ark, this psalm was sung. Moving th Ark into Jrusalm was an vnt which involvd grat clbration; thrfor, w would xpct th psalms sung during this tim to b clbratory. Psalm 96 is clarly clbratory, whr th psalmist calls upon th havns, th filds, th trs, tc. to rjoic. In any portion of th Word of God, it dos not strik m that clbratory languag is nough (Psalm 150 may b an xcption to this). I would xpct that thr would b som mat, so to spak. Thr ar going to b two things which stand out in this psalm: Jsus will b spokn of by nam and th psalmist will spak of th circular orbit of th arth (if you want to s this right now, just go to th final translation at th nd of this documnt). Whn I cam across ths two things in th Hbrw, I must admit, it knockd my socks off. To prpar you for this, lt m xplain th writing of th psalmist vrsus th writing of th Holy Spirit. All Scriptur is God-brathd, so th writr is brathing in Bibl doctrin, and h braths out Scriptur. God th Holy Spirit is th sourc of divin viwpoint that th human author braths in, and God th Holy Spirit has an ffct upon th nd product (i.., th writtn Word of God). God th Holy Spirit so suprnaturally dirctd th human writrs of Scriptur that, without waiving thir intllignc, thir individuality, thir prsonal flings, thir litrary styl, or any othr human

3 3 Th Book of 1Chronicls (1Chronicls 16) factor of xprssion, His complt and cohrnt mssag to mankind was rcordd with prfct accuracy in th 1 original languags of Scriptur: th vry words baring th authority of divin authorship. I do not bliv that vry writr of Scriptur fully undrstood all that thy wrot. This dos not man that th authors of Scriptur just opnd thmslvs us, and God th Holy Spirit took ovr thir bodis and hands but thr ar aspcts to Old Tstamnt Scriptur in particular, which wr not fully undrstood by th writrs thmslvs. What w find in Psalm 96 is a prfct xampl of this. On could rad and translat this psalm, and nvr raliz that on vrs spaks of Jsus by nam, and two othr vrss spak of th orbit of th arth. I do not bliv that th psalmist himslf knw this. Howvr, as w find many tims throughout th Word of God, th Holy Spirit sms to b giving us additional information from maning-rich passags which vn ludd th author. You might say that in many passags, thr ar layrs of maning, which, with tim, bcom clar. It is lik God th Holy Spirit is saying a fw things to us through this psalm, and winking, so as to say, Can you bliv that I hav insrtd this information hr? In my xamination of Scriptur, I hav oftn com across passags and vnts which smd to b somwhat confusing why ar thy thr, what is bing said, why is this important to point out? And, with a littl study, all of a suddn, it all maks prfct sns. On xampl of this is whn Saul spok to Samul, who was brought back from th dad. I must admit that, thr wr a numbr of tims whn I rad this passag or hard it taught whr I thought, what s up with that? But, with a littl bit of study, and guidanc from God th Holy Spirit, whn I ralizd what was going on, my jaw droppd in amazmnt. So was my xprinc with this psalm. Thr ar two mor things which ar found in this psalm, hiddn away. W will find th nam YHWH hiddn in v. 11; and thn w ar told twic H has com! Although it is common to rpat a vrb in ordr to giv grat mphasis to th action, it is lss common to rpat a phras. I find it intrsting that Jsus is hiddn in th 2 nd vrs, YHWH (on mmbr of th Godhad) is hiddn in v. 11; and now in v. 13, it sounds as if Jsus will com to th arth two tims (two advnts). So, although som might tak this to b mphatic, I think th tru undrstanding hr is, Jsus will com to th arth on two occasions first as God s suffring srvant (Isa. 53) and thn H will rturn to judg th arth (Psalm 96:13). Spurgon commnts on th thm of this psalm: [Psalm 96] is a grand Missionary Hymn, and it is a wondr that Jws can rad it and yt rmain xclusiv. If blindnss in part had not happnd unto Isral, thy might hav sn long ago, and would now s, that thir God always had dsigns of lov for all th familis of mn, and nvr intndd that his grac and his covnant should rlat only to th sd of Abraham aftr th flsh. W do not wondr that th larg-hartd David rjoicd and dancd bfor th ark, whil h saw in vision all th arth turning from idols to th on living and tru 2 God. Th NET Bibl is vn mor succinct: Th psalmist summons vryon to prais th Lord, th 3 sovrign crator of th world who prsrvs and promots justic in th arth. In 1Chron. 16, w hav th first third of Psalm 105 rcordd; and a fw lins from Psalms 106 and 136; howvr, narly all of Psalm 96 will b rcordd in 1Chron. 16. W will xamin Psalm 96 carfully and in grat lngth hrin, and giv it a suprficial xamination in Chronicls. W should b abl to rasonably limit th authorship of this psalm to on of two mn: David or Asaph. In a modratly confusing inscription which is not found in th Hbrw David is namd as th author. David did dirct Asaph to put togthr th songs and choir for this clbration, and Asaph chos this as on of th psalms to b sung. Thr is no rason to assum that Asaph wrot all of th psalms for this clbration. This all took plac th planning and clbration in a vry short spac of tim. I suspct that thr was mayb a wk s tim 1 Although I took this from I do not know who originally wordd this dfinition of th vrbal plnary viw of th inspiration of Scriptur I suspct that it may hav bn Chafr, but ths words may vn prdat him. 2 3 Charls Haddon Spurgon, A Trasury of David; -Sword, Psalm 96 introduction. Th Nt Bibl ; by Biblical Studis Prss (BSP); takn from -Sword; also found at Psalm 96.

4 Psalm 96 4 involvd in th planning of this vnt, as th Ark was only kpt at Obd-Edom s hom for a priod of 3 months. During this tim, God s blssing had bcom quit noticabl, so that th Ark was undrstood to b th sourc of blssing. It would mak littl sns for God s blssing to b vidnt in much lss than ths 3 months. Somon had to actually obsrv, from th outsid, what was happning on Obd-Edom s ranch, and this obsrvation is what ld David to dcid to try again to mov th Ark of God. Also, David had apparntly studid th Word of God in th mantim, and h figurd out what wnt wrong in his first attmpt to mov th Ark. Lt m back up a bit: David had alrady trid to mov th Ark into Jrusalm, and on faithful man did as a rsult from an action which obviously was not som sort of calculatd vil. Th Ark appard to bcom jarrd and rady to fall, and this man (Uzziah) rachd out his hand to stady th Ark, and h did right thr on th spot. So David took th Ark to th narst rsidnc, th hom of Obd-Edom, and h studid th Scripturs in ordr to figur out what to do. Aftr 3 short months, it bcoms obvious that Obd-Edom is bing blssd by housing th Ark. So, David tlls Asaph to mak ths prparations to mov th Ark, and Asaph dos, organizing quit a rmarkabl 4 clbration whr psalms ar sung and musical instrumnts ar playd. Asaph may hav writtn som of th psalms and h may hav takn som of th psalms out of th vr growing collction of psalms. Thrfor, it is rasonabl to suppos that David wrot this psalm, as pr th Grk inscription (to b discussd in dpth latr) or that Asaph himslf wrot this psalm (which is lss likly, and would contradict th Grk inscription). Thr is no inscription in th Hbrw and, apart from this psalm bing rproducd is almost its ntirty in 1Chron. 16, w hav no othr clus as to its authorship. I am having a mor difficult tim than usual summarizing and outlining this particular psalm. W bgin with 6 commands in vv. 1 3 and 8 commands in vv Th numbrs hr ar unusual. 7 is oftn rlatd to divin things, but 6 is th numbr of man. I am not compltly crtain what th numbr 8 sms to indicat. Intrstingly nough, non of th sourcs which I rfr to hav clar outlins ithr. In all othr psalms, I am abl to supplmnt my own outlin from 3 to 6 diffrnt outlins, which ar gnrally quit prominnt. Howvr, in this situation, I found only two clar outlins. Of ths imprativs at th bginning of th psalm, th first 3 ar th sam; and of th imprativs of th middl rd of this psalm, th first 3 ar th sam. Th 3 tim sing s found, it is followd by th phras blss His nam; th rd 3 tim ascrib (giv) is usd, it is in conjunction with His nam. Aftr His nam, w hav Jsus (salvation) mntiond in th first part; and aftr His nam w hav an offring mntiond. So w apparntly hav a paralllism bing st up, and to associat salvation (Jsus) with an offring. So w clarly hav som parallls hr, but thy ar still not asy to apply an outlin to. Essntially, I am thinking out loud hr. In any cas, w bgin with 6 imprativs in th first 3 vrss, which at first dal with singing, but th final two ar clarly contnt filld, whr th harr is njoind to tll, to proclaim. In vv. 3b 6, w ar told why w ought to proclaim Jhovah Elohim abov all othr gods. In vv. 7 10, w hav 8 mor imprativs, nding with vry intrsting languag about th arth and God s judgmnt of all popl (vv ). Vry fw commntators attmptd any sort of an outlin for this psalm. Kil and Dlitzsch writ: Th fiv six lin strophs of th Psalm bfor us ar not to b mistakn. Th chroniclr has don away with fiv lins, 5 and thrby disorganizd th strophic structur; and on lin (Psalm 96:10) h has rmovd from its position. I don t rally follow what thy ar saying, xcpt that, th structur is disorganizd. Chaptr Outlin Charts, Maps and Short Doctrins Th NIV Study Bibl has vn a simplr outlin: Th NIV Study Bibl Outlin of Psalm 96 Scriptur Psalm 96:1 6 Psalm 96:7 12 Primary Focus of Sction A call to all nations to sing th prais of th Lord. A call to all nations to worship th Lord and to hail throughout th world th glory of His rightous rol. Th NIV Study Bibl suggsts that ach sction can b furthr subdividd into two sctions. Th NIV Study Bibl; 1995 by Th Zondrvan Corporation; p. 881 (Footnot). Chaptr Outlin Charts, Maps and Short Doctrins Whn it coms to th outlin of this psalm, I don t think that I hav don it justic, nor do I find grat work don by othr scholars ithr. I hav this nagging suspicion that thr is a ky which unlocks and hlps all of this to fit togthr as it should. David tnds to hav intricatly organizd psalms. Now, dspit th lack of a good outlin, thr is a gnral prvasiv thm in this psalm: th univrsality of Jhovah Elohim and th fact that th God of th Jws will judg all mankind. This undrstanding is th basis of this psalm. First of all, this psalm is clarly dirctd to all th nations (vv. 3, 7, 9 10, 13). Scondly, th tru God of all mankind is Jhovah Elohim (vv. 2, 4, 7 10, 13) bcaus th gods of ths hathn nations ar mpty, maninglss idols (vv. 4 5). This is th fundamntal thrust of Psalm 96. If you undrstand this, navigating th psalm is asy. Thr is a gnral prvasiv thm in this psalm: th univrsality of Jhovah Elohim and th fact that th God of th Jw s w ill judg all mankind. This is th fundamntal thrust of Psalm 96. Thr ar rmarkabl similaritis with this psalm and Psalm 95 spcifically, th first 6 vrss of Psalm 95 and th first 9 vrss of this psalm. Bing that w find ths psalms togthr, and that th LXX also attributs Psalm 95 to David, it is rasonabl that h composd thm around th sam tim. In th lattr portion of Psalm 95, David spcifically spaks about th Mribah gnration Gn X and, givn that David is moving th Ark aftr studying th Old Tstamnt (that which is availabl to him), it is rasonabl that h would bcom

6 Psalm 96 6 inspird to writ about som of th things which h finds in his Old Tstamnt (th books of th Law, Gnsis, and prhaps Job, Judgs, Joshua, and Ruth). Lt m tak ths points and put thm togthr. David is th Author of Psalm Psalm 96 is sung to clbrat David moving th Ark of God from th hom of Obd-Edom into Jrusalm. Thrfor, this psalm was writtn in a tim priod consistnt with Davidic authorship. 1Chron. 16: Th LXX attributs both Psalms 95 and 96 to David. Both psalms ar vry similar to on anothr. Psalm 95 is clarly th rsult of th author knowing th tru issus involvd in th xodus with th Mribah gnration. At th vry last, som on at som tim, blivd that David was th author of this and th prvious psalm. 3. This comports quit wll with th ida that David, whn his first attmpt to mov th Ark of God faild, wnt back and rad up on th Ark in th Law of God, his Old Tstamnt. W would xpct that whatvr David writs to rval a knowldg of Old Tstamnt Scriptur, and Psalm 95 clarly shows that. 4. David, bing a musical sort, would b inspird to writ about what h has rad, and what could b mor inspiring than th Mribah gnration? I say that only partly tongu-in-chk. I grw up with on particularly bad influnc in my lif, and I knw from a vry arly ag that, if this prson ziggd, thn I ought to zag. W larn from bad xampls. Evry blivr who xamins th lif of David ought to rcogniz that h scrwd up about a dcad of his lif by making som wrong dcisions; and this should inform us. But, I digrss. What is important is, th similarity btwn Psalms 95 and 96; thir clos proximity, and th nam of David bing affixd to both psalms in th Grk suggsts that David is th author. Thr is only on aspct of this psalm which suggsts othr than a Davidic authorship: this psalm is difficult to organiz, and David s psalms tnd to b xtrmly wll-organizd. In fact, thy tnd to b so carfully organizd, that if you miss th ky to th organization, thn you cannot rcogniz th organization itslf. Now, just bcaus I don t rcogniz a carful organization in this psalm dos not man that on dos not xist. Howvr, this minor dtail has causd svral commntators to furrow thir brows. Chaptr Outlin Charts, Maps and Short Doctrins Although I hav don a commntary on Psalm 95, I wrot it back in 1997, whn I was just bginning to writ commntary; thrfor, it dfinitly nds to b updatd. Matthw Hnry commnts about this Psalm: This psalm is a prophcy of th calling of th Gntils; all th arth will hav this nw song put into thir mouths, will hav both caus and b calld upon to sing it. Th subjct-mattr of this song is His salvation, th grat salvation which was to b brought 6 about by th Lord Jsus; that must b shown forth as th caus of this joy and prais. It is fascinating that, Psalm 95 spaks of th ngativ volition and failur of Isral and that this psalm spaks of th Mssiah and vanglizing th Gntils. This would giv th pastor-tachr two diffrnt approachs to this psalm: (1) tach ths psalms sparatly, as warrantd in Scriptur (for instanc, Psalm 96 could b rad ithr along sid 1Chron. 16 or with th book of Nhmiah) and Psalm 95 aftr a study of th Pntatuch; or (2) as a pair of psalms taught conscutivly, to introduc, for instanc, Rom. 9, whr, bcaus of th ngativ volition of Isral, God has gon to th Gntils. Ths two psalms illustrat God s chang of focus, without ncssarily rvaling any Church Ag mystry doctrin ( is a good link which will giv you a quick and dirty look at th Mystry Doctrins). 6 Matthw Hnry, Commntary on th Whol Bibl; from -Sword, Psalm 96:1 (ditd).

7 7 Th Book of 1Chronicls (1Chronicls 16) Chaptr Outlin Charts, Maps and Short Doctrins This dos lad m to a digrssion: how dos th Old Tstamnt rlat to th mystry doctrin of th Church Ag? Th Church Ag itslf is a mystry to thos in th Old Tstamnt no on saw it coming. Th Church Ag is rarly mntiond in th gospls (I bliv th Uppr Room Discours is th only plac whr thr is any amount of concntratd taching prtinnt to th Church Ag). Th Old Tstamnt and th Mystry Doctrins 1. W nd to dfin som basic trms to bgin with: a. A dispnsation is a priod of tim sn from th divin prspctiv. This word actually rfrs to th administration of a houshold, and a dispnsation tlls us how God administrs His houshold hr on arth. Lik many words of Scriptur, this was a scular trm appropriatd by th Apostl Paul and givn a non-scular application. Bob Thim Jr. did this as wll, appropriating such trms as rbound, th Forward Lin of Troops, tc. b. Th Ag of Isral, which bgins with th Patriarchs in Gnsis and is suspndd (not ndd) st around th tim of th 1 advnt of Jsus Christ, and thrfor, taks in th bulk of th Old Tstamnt. c. Th Church Ag follows, bginning at th day of Pntcost aftr our Lord s ascnsion into havn. st d. Som thologians (lik R. B. Thim III), spak of th 1 advnt of our Lord as a sparat dispnsation th Dispnsation of th Hypostatic Union. Thr ar portions of Danil which lay out a spcific tim tabl for th Ag of Isral, and at som point in tim, I nd to put that to papr. 2. Paul, throughout his pistls, spaks of mystry doctrins. This trm mystry rfrs to doctrins which ar not known to thos outsid a Grk fratrnity or organization (again, giving a scular trm and nonscular maning). A modrn-day quivalnt might b th Skull and Crossbons fratrnity at Harvard. Thos insid th fratrnity know th doctrins, ruls, rgulations, and aims of thir organization. Thos outsid th fratrnity do not know ths things. 3. Ths mystry doctrins ar doctrins pculiar to th Church Ag and not found in any prvious dispnsation. This would includ th univrsal indwlling of th Holy Spirit, God th Fathr and God th Son; th baptism of th Holy Spirit; th filling of th Holy Spirit, and, th biggi: that God is working through an organization diffrnt from Isral (i.., th vry xistnc of th Church Ag). 4. Ths mystry doctrins wr not known to blivrs in th Ag of Isral. Ths mystry doctrins wr not vn known to th Apostls, for th most part (which is not saying much, as thy smd to st undrstand vry littl during th 1 Advnt). 5. Howvr, in th Uppr Room Discours and in th pistls of Paul (as wll as in th othr pistls), w hav th mystry doctrins of th Church Ag laid out. 6. So, I would think that, with Paul s us of th trm mystry (ìõóôþñéïí), that no on could go to th Old Tstamnt and pontificat on th Church Ag or on th doctrins of th Church Ag. 7. Howvr, th Church Ag was nvr hiddn from Jsus Christ. Th Church Ag was nvr hiddn from God th Holy Spirit. All mmbrs of th Godhad ar in on th plan of God th Fathr. Thrfor, w should not b surprisd to find passags in th Old Tstamnt which at last giv us hints about th coming Church Ag. Th Holy Spirit knows about all th dispnsations; th Holy Spirit undrstands vry doctrin and vry mchanic of vry priod of tim. Thrfor, it is not inconcivabl that thr ar going to b passags that, aftr th fact, rval to us that God th Holy Spirit knw about th Church Ag and H tlls us about it to som limitd dgr, without btraying th mystry doctrins or th fact of th Church Ag itslf. 8. Thrfor, from th prspctiv of th Church Ag and taking into account th prspctiv of thos living during th Ag of Isral w may find things within this psalm which at last suggsts what is coming. 9. As a gnral rul, w may xpct that no Old Tstamnt is going to giv us any spcifics about th Church Ag nor will it tll us about th doctrins which ar pculiar to Church Ag blivrs. Howvr, th Old Tstamnt is writtn by God th Holy Spirit, as pr our dfinition of th inspiration of Scriptur, and sinc th Holy Spirit knows th ntir plan of God, thr will b, from tim to tim, passags which

8 Psalm 96 8 Th Old Tstamnt and th Mystry Doctrins rval that th Holy Spirit knows God s plan in its ntirty. 10. I am trying to com up with an illustration of this, and I can com up with two possibl ons: a. Thr is som organization calld th Turtls with th on cardinal rul that, if somon asks you point blank, Ar you a Turtl? you must answr You bt your swt ass I am. I bliv that somon askd Johnny Carson this qustion, roughly a Millnnium ago, on national tv, and h gav th appropriat rspons. At that tim, using that kind of languag on national tv was shocking, to say th last. Somon who was not a Turtl would hav bn nonplusd by such a qustion. b. I am sur that th Skull and Crossbons organization has a scrt handshak. If you mt a fllow S and C guy, you might shar this handshak. A prson who is a S and C mmbr who is about rady to shak hands with somon h thinks is a fllow mmbr, may bgin to us th scrt handshak, but chang to a normal handshak whn h ss that prson is not rsponding in that way. c. Apart from ths things, you may not raliz that this or that prson is a Turtl or a mmbr of th S and C organization, but thr ar things that thy might do from tim to tim which rval thir knowldg of thir rspctiv organizations, without rvaling any ral scrts. This is what w will find from tim to tim in th Bibl. Th Holy Spirit knows th nd from th bginning, and whn w also know som of ths things, w can rcogniz it. d. Two simpl xampls ar, whn God clothd Adam and Ev with animal skins, as an unblivr, w might rad this and hav no ida what is going on. Howvr, God had to covr thir sins, and this was don by th rprsntativ sacrific of an animal. Whn God had rspct for Abl s sacrific but not for Cain s vgtabls, and unblivr rading this would hav no ida why God would sm to b so arbitrary. A blivr with doctrin would undrstand that this is th diffrnc btwn an animal sacrific and human works. 11. So, th dal is this: God th Holy Spirit knows all of human history, from bginning to nd. Ths things may not ncssarily b known spcifically from th Old Tstamnt, but, whn viwing th Old Tstamnt from our priod of tim, it is obvious that God th Holy Spirit rvals mor to us in His Word than vn th human author ralizs. Just in cas you think I am making this Turtl thing up, s Also, I am only gussing about th Skull and Crossbons handshak. Chaptr Outlin Charts, Maps and Short Doctrins Psalm 96 Inscription Th occasion of this psalm is clar: it was sung th scond tim that David movd th Ark of God. Howvr, th inscription which is found in th Grk says somthing about th captivity and th building of th hous (th Tmpl?). Thrfor, w nd to xamin in dpth, this inscription which is found in th Grk, but not in th Hbrw. Right away, with th inscription, w run into problms with Psalm 96. W do not find an inscription in th Hbrw but w find on in th Grk and Latin. Furthrmor, th inscription is all about David building his hous and it is said to b aftr th captivity, which is somwhat confusing, as w would xpct th word captivity to rfr to thos of Judah bing takn away to Babylon, which took plac svral hundrd yars aftr th tim of David. It might b bst just to lay ths problms out on by on. Problms with th Inscription of Psalm Thr is no inscription in th Hbrw, but thr is in th Grk and Latin. 2. It is clar that this psalm was sung whn David brought th Ark into Jrusalm, basd upon th txt of 1Chron. 16.

9 9 Th Book of 1Chronicls (1Chronicls 16) Problms with th Inscription of Psalm Th Grk txt spaks of this bing writtn whn David had his hous (palac) built. 4. It is possibl that w should sparat David, th namd author, from th building of this hous. Prhaps this is spaking of th building of th Tmpl? 5. Th Grk also spaks of this bing built in rlation to th captivity, which is gnrally undrstood to rfr to th Babylonian captivity, which taks plac 400 yars aftr th tim of David. 6. So, w hav what appars to b 2 or 3 diffrnt tim priods associatd with this psalm. So you undrstand how my mind works, ths ar obsrvations which I mak coming right out of th gat, so to spak. At this point, I hav not vn a clu whthr I can rasonabl addrss ths problms. Howvr, intllctual intgrity rquirs m to lav this st of problms hr whthr I am abl to rasonably addrss thm or not. Any pastor who xgts this psalm should hav ths things on his mind whil doing so. Basd upon just a suprficial xamination, I hav two possibl xplanations: (1) This inscription from th Grk and Latin is just simply wrong and should not b associatd with this psalm at all. This solvs almost vry problm xcpt, why is it found in th Grk? (2) It is possibl that this psalm was associatd with 2 or 3 diffrnt vnts in th mind of th Jws, and a scrib, knowing this, notd th two vnts with which this psalm was associatd as sort of a footnot (which is possibly what most or all inscriptions ar). 7 Th inscription which follows is found in th Grk, Hbrw, Ethiopic and Arabic. It is not found in th Masortic txt, and English translations do not mntion it. Slavishly litral: Whn th hous was bing built [or, rstord] aftr th captivity; a song by David. According to Gill, th Syriac rads: A Psalm of David, a Prophcy of th coming of th Mssiah, and of th calling of th Gntils that bliv in Him:... Givn what follows, this is a vry accurat and rmarkabl titl. Translation: Whn th hous [or, tmpl] was bing built [or rstord] aftr th captivity;... This is putting th cart bfor th hors, but w do not hav vrbiag hr which indicats that this psalm was writtn to David or for David. David did hav a hous built for him by Hiram th King of Tyr (1Chron. 14:1) and this would hav occurrd possibly bfor David brought th Ark into Jrusalm (it is found in that ordr in both Samul and Chronicls). This mans that this psalm could hav bn writtn somtim prior to th moving of th Ark, ot clbrat th building of David s palac. Th problmatic phras is aftr th captivity, which would cost most radrs to bliv that w ar spaking of th Tmpl bing rstord aftr Ezra and Nhmiah rturn from captivity (originally undr Babylon) with th small groups of Jws. Howvr, what blows this ida out of th watr, is th nxt phras whr this is a song by David. So, anothr thought on this is, prhaps this is a rfrnc to David whn h was out of th country of Judah and Isral, in captivity, as it wr. Th problm with this thory is, David has bn king ovr Judah for th past 7 yars, so it would b hard to s that as bing in captivity. Although I do not know if this final fminin singular noun lnds itslf to bing intrprtd aftr th xil, but that would sort of pull things togthr again, thr is still th problm that David was xild, but that was at last 7 yars prior to taking Jrusalm. This introducs anothr thory: although in th txt, David appars to hav takn Jrusalm aftr bcoming king ovr Judah and Isral (s 2Sam. 5:1 5), prhaps h first took Jrusalm and thn was mad king ovr all Isral (th northrn and southrn kingdoms?). Howvr, by th givn txt itslf, David was still king for 7 and a half yars in Hbron ovr Judah prior to th taking of Jrusalm. In othr words, it is difficult to associat David with th word captivity. Historically, it just dos not hold watr. Th nd rsult hr is, this inscription is quit difficult to rconcil with th historical vnts. Howvr, stay with m on this, aftr w tak in th final phras. 9 Kittl, Grhard, Thological Dictionary of th Nw Tstamnt; 1993; Erdm an s Printing Company; translatd by Goffry Bromly; Vol. I, p. 196.

Intrstingly nough, thr is no way w could mak this rad a song to David or a song for David. That would hav bn th gnitiv/ablativ cas. Furthrmor, vn if w trid to plac this psalm somhow with th rbuilding of th Tmpl aftr th captivity, w hav th problm that, it is clarly sung whn David movd th Ark into Jrusalm. Lt s discuss this furthr: somon, at som point in tim, apparntly did affix this txt to this psalm, and it would hav occurrd probably in th Hbrw txt prior to 300 B.C. (bcaus th Grk LXX was translatd btwn n B.C.). Th txt of Samul was writtn around 1000 B.C. and th txt of Chronicls was composd around 400 B.C. If this is a psalm of David (and our Chronicls txt placs it during this ra), thn it also would hav bn committd to papr around 1000 B.C. Somtim latr (this is on thory, by th way), somon addd this inscription txt to this psalm. Thr was a captivity which occurrd 721 B.C. (th northrn kingdom) and th othr in 586 B.C. (th southrn kingdom). Th Jws do not appar to hav rturnd aftr th first captivity (which nd is why thy ar oftn rfrrd to as th 10 lost tribs of Isral); and som did rturn aftr th 2 captivity, around 516 B.C. This would suggst that somon, for rasons which ar not clar to m, affixd ths words to Psalm 96, to rfr to th rturn from th Babylonian\Assyrian captivity. A scond thory: somon lgitimatly addd ths words to this psalm aftr 516 B.C. and th rason thy did this is, this psalm was sung during th r-building of th tmpl. So, th song did not originat in this tim fram, but was sung during this tim fram. David, as author, was givn crdit. Th only problm, and this on is slight, is, didn t Asaph writ this? Asaph was in charg of gtting th musicians and music togthr for this occasion. Thr is no rason to assum that h wrot ach and vry psalm sung on this occasion. That mans, in addition to all of th organizing in this ara, h would hav composd 4 or mor psalms. So, it is rasonabl to assum that Asaph took from psalms which had alrady bn composd (although it is possibl that h composd on or two psalms himslf from this group). This viw, that somon simply addd ths words to th psalm to indicat that it was sung whil rbuilding th Tmpl of God, solvs a lot of problms. It xplains whr th words cam from, why thy wr affixd to this psalm, and how this psalm could hav bn writtn by David, yt associatd with th rbuilding of th Tmpl. This also xplains why this lin was not carrid ovr into th Masortic txts. An intllignt scrib rad this, sing th words captivity and David in th sam lin, is nonplusd. So h locats som oldr manuscripts to s if this phras can b found with thm. If h coms across any manuscript writtn prior to 516 B.C., thn this phras would b missing. Applying arly txtual criticism ruls from thir day, this phras would not b carrid ovr on subsqunt Jwish manuscripts, which bcam th basis for th Masortic txts. Howvr, thos who translatd th Hbrw into Grk may hav bn using a manuscript producd aftr 516 B.C., with this inscription in it, and thy ran with it.

13 13 Th Book of 1Chronicls (1Chronicls 16) What I hav attmptd to do is to provid a rational xplanation as to why this is found in som txts (th Grk and Latin) but not in othrs; and why w hav an inscription which spaks of David and th captivity in th sam brath. All of what I hav writtn is simply spculation and nothing mor. Furthrmor, it has no ffct upon any doctrin whatsovr. My apologis to anyon who is rading this, and coms to th conclusion, you spnt svral pags discussing this and now you say, it is rally an unimportant mattr? It is th way my mind works. I lik to s th pics of a puzzl fit togthr. Whn I run into a problm, I oftn vrbaliz that problm bfor I know th answr to it. Th rason for this is, it will tak m narly a month to xgt this psalm, and whn I am don, I will hav writtn about pags. As I writ I will com across qustions, so I commit ths qustions to papr (so to spak) so that I can s thm priodically to dtrmin if I answrd thm or not. Now, bcaus of this inscription, many hav misundrstood or misapplid it. Kil and Dlitzsch, for xampl, writ: By this th LXX corrctly intrprts th Psalm as a post-xilic song: and th Psalm corrsponds throughout to th advanc which th mind of Isral has xprincd in th Exil 10 concrning its mission in th world. Ths ar thms which run through this fascinating psalm, and, as I hav said, this psalm was probably rad/sung during th rbuilding of th Tmpl aftr th captivity; but, David probably wrot th psalm and it was dfinitly sung during th moving of th Ark. Now, having all of this in mind, rcognizing that this psalm spaks of Jsus dirctly, by nam, and that it spaks of th vanglization of th Gntil world, what mor apropos vnt to associat this psalm with, than th moving st of th Ark into Jrusalm. This Ark coming into Jrusalm is Jsus coming into Jrusalm at th 1 Advnt. At th nd of this psalm, aftr w hav covrd ach vrs, I will match th actual vnt of moving th Ark into 11 Jrusalm with this psalm and with Jsus coming into Jrusalm. A nw song is a Nw Tstamnt song, a song of prais for th nw covnant and th prcious privilgs of that covnant. A nw song is a song that shall b vr nw, and shall nvr wax old nor vanish away; it is an vrlasting song, that shall nvr b antiquatd or out of 13 dat. What is quit distinctiv about this psalm is th Mssianic natur of it and th hiddn nam of our Lord. It was vry apropos to sing such a song to God upon bringing th Ark into Jrusalm. Thr was to b a spiritual rsurgnc, at th bringing of th Ark into Jrusalm. I want you to rcall th history hr. During th rign of Saul, w har practically nothing about th Tabrnacl (smi-prmannt Tnt) of God, nor do w har about th Ark or th pristhood. Saul has a clos rlationship with Samul, a propht, and Samul has som things going on (his school of prophts), but w just don t har much about this, xcpt whn Saul dcidd to tak som librtis and offr up sacrifics himslf, not having nough faith that Samul would show up and do this. This bgan a rift btwn Samul and Saul (all Saul ndd to do was to listn to Samul s instructions). Saul intracts twic with th prists: onc whn h calls for thm to bring th Ephod of God to him to guid him (not th Ark 1Sam. 14:18); and latr, aftr David gos to th prists in Nob, Saul gos aftr David and kills all of th prists, sav on, who gts away (1Sam. 22). Now, thr was obviously som sort of spiritual activity going on in Isral during Saul s rign, as th prists apparntly did hav th Tabrnacl st up in Nob, but, for all w know, this may hav bn akin to a monastry, whr fw show up for srvics and intraction with th public was minimal (w don t rally know hr). Howvr, whn David brings th Ark into Jrusalm, this is quit somthing. This mans that th king of Isral rcognizs th importanc of Isral s spiritual lif, and th importanc of th Ark (which apparntly had not bn in th Tabrnacl for th ntirty of Saul s rign, but kpt in storag instad). If Saul wantd to do somthing during his rign, h could hav unitd th Ark and th Tabrnacl again, but h did not. So, w hav a full gnration whr Isral was out of kiltr with hr spiritual lif. David hopd to bgin to solv this by bringing th Ark into Jrusalm. Aftr this, h intndd to build a Tmpl for th Ark, which h did not build. In any cas, this psalm clbrats th bringing of th Ark into Jrusalm, which David had anticipatd would b th bginning of a wondrful intrmingling of Isral and spiritual things. Hnc, h calls for us to sing a nw song. Spurgon concluds: Th song is for Jhovah alon, th hymns which chantd th praiss of Jupitr and Nptun, Vishnoo and Siva ar hushd for vr; Bacchanalian shouts ar silncd, lascivious sonnts ar no mor. Unto th on only God all music is to b ddicatd. Mourning is ovr, and th tim of th singing of harts has com. David was also inspird to sing about how th bringing of th Ark into Jrusalm would b a caus for blssing to all th arth, and so h calls upon all th arth to sing to Jhovah. W will find this to b on of th most univrsal of th psalms, whr David saw grat import not just to th nation Isral, but to all th world. Now rmmbr in th introduction, how I said thr ar parallls btwn David bringing th Ark into Jrusalm, and our Lord going into Jrusalm for th Passovr (whr H would b th Passovr sacrific). Our Lord did not just di for a slct fw on th cross, nor did Jsus di for Isral only, but for all th world. Thrfor, this psalm is appropriatly to b sung by all th arth. It is rasonabl to assum that what is nw hr is that David calls upon all th arth to clbrat Jhovah God. Whatvr distinction xists btwn th Jws and Gntils appars to b rmovd, so that all mankind could clbrat our rlationship to God. At that tim you Gntils wr without Christ. You wr xcludd from citiznship in Isral, and th pldgs God mad in his promis wr forign to you. You had no hop and wr in th world without God. But now through Christ Jsus you, who wr onc far away, hav bn brought nar by th blood of Christ. So H is our pac. In his body h has mad Jwish and non-jwish popl on by braking down th wall of hostility that kpt thm apart (Eph. 2:12 14). This psalm will look down th corridors 15 of tim, to a tim whn Gntils ar brought clarly and fully into th plan of God. This is not th only psalm or th only tim that it is clarly statd that God spaks of th Gntils. Lt th popls thank You, O God; lt all th popls thank You. Oh lt th popls b glad and sing for joy; for You shall judg th popls uprightly and govrn th popls on arth. Slah. Lt th popls giv thanks to You, O God; lt all th popls giv thanks to You. Th arth has givn its incras; God, our own God, shall blss us (Psalm 67:3 6). Sing to God, kingdoms of th arth, praiss to th Lord (Psalm 68:32). So throughout th Bibl, 15 Gntils hav always bn a part of th plan of God; but God will us us Gntils spcifically to accomplish His purposs.
