Sermon 2: Justified Cha-Ching! Your Account is Full! Sermon 3: Justified You re in Right Standing! Background/Review: A. If you want to understand the book of Romans, you must get a grip on the term righteousness. The Greek term is diakaiosune. It means fulfilling all the demands required within the relationship. In doing so, one is declared righteous, which is the exact same thing as being justified. From Romans chpt. 3 8 the term diakaisune is used over 35x s. B. Paul still wants the Christians in Rome not to get confused about the means of righteousness. C. Righteousness does not come by trying to obey the law of God. We all fall short. He gives his Jewish audience a flashback into their own Jewish history. Righteousness came by faith (as illustrated by Abraham) way before the law was ever introduced (under the life of Moses) D. Righteousness does not come by means of circumcision. Just because you were dedicated to the Lord as a baby does not mean that today you are in right standing with God. Paul does another flashback into their own tradition proving that faith came before circumcision and that faith is the basis for being declared righteous by God. 1
I. Adam s Two Punch Combo Rom 5:12-14 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned 13 for before the law was given, sin was in the world. But sin is not taken into account when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who was a pattern of the one to come. A. Adam s Two Punch Combo is Sin and Death (5:12) Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned 1. Sin entered the world through one man (Adam) 2. As a result, death came to all men. 3. All men die because all men sin. B. The Two Punch Combo existed before the Law of Moses (5:13) 13 for before the law was given, sin was in the world. But sin is not taken into account when there is no law. 1. Chronological Flashback Adam & Eve Sinned by breaking the commandment of the Lord (Gen. 2:16; 3:6-8). God calls Abram and makes a Promise (Gen 12:1-3; 15:2-6, 15:12-15). God then calls Moses to deliver his people from slavery (Ex. 3:1-15) and institutes the Law (Ex. 20:1-20; 24:3-8). The time-frame between Adam breaking the one commandment of God (Gen. 2-3) and the Law of Moses revealing multiple commandments of God (Ex :8) are several, several, several centuries apart! Thus, sin still entered into this world way before the Law of Moses pointed it out. 2
13b But sin is not taken into account when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who was a pattern of the one to come. 2. Two interpretations to the above passage: The first interpretation is that Paul is really saying something like this: Obviously people are not held accountable to their sin if they did not have a law. However, even though there was no written law before Moses, people still had a divine law written within their hearts. Therefore, the people who lived between the timeframe of Adam and Moses still died because they still consciously sinned against moral law written in their hearts. The second interpretation is that sin was not technically charged against the people living from the time of Adam all the way up to the Law of Moses because the people had no law holding them accountable. Nevertheless, the reason why people still died during that timeframe and continue to die is because of the sin of Adam and because we are all descendents of Adam, all men inherit death as a consequence for just being in Adam. 3. I believe that there may be some truth to this first interpretation, but I believe the second interpretation to be more reliable for three reasons. First, I do not believe God has hidden rules. God is very upfront with everything and we should be the same in parenting and business. God as a parent to Adam shared the consequences in partaking from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Second, the law written in the hearts is more appropriate to the time frame after Jesus as Jeremiah prophetically declared that there would be a new covenant granted to Israel after their captivity in slavery. "This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time," declares the LORD. "I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people (Jer. 31:33). As Christians, we see this fulfilled when Jesus inaugurated the new covenant. Third, I believe Paul s writing is more focused on making a contrast comparison between the consequences of being in Adam (sin and death) and the benefits of being in Christ (justified, eternal life). Therefore the sin of Adam has a rippling effect on all of us because we are all from the same seed of Adam. This is why death is in all of our genes/dna. However, Adam was a pattern of the one to come in that the righteousness of Jesus also has a rippling effect on all of those who have faith justification and eternal life! 3
II. Jesus Two Punch Combo Rom 5:16 But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God's grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many! A. The term gift and grace is God s two punch combo: First, he revitalizes you by hitting you with the grace of his Son Jesus and then he knocks you to kingdom come by giving you the gift of righteousness. B. The two punch combo of his grace followed with the gift reinforces the whole notion that we cannot earn any good merit before God. Grace- means unearned favor Gift- means free. C. Therefore, our right standing with God is on the basis of God only being good to us. Transition: In the rest of the passage, Paul shifts his writing style. A. Paul s writing exhibits a sparing event in explaining two categories. 1. The first category is about our sin, which leads to death, and ultimately condemnation. 2. The second category is the gift of grace that has been given to us, which leads to justification and ultimately eternal life. B. In explaining the differences, he constantly goes back and forth using contrasting parallels to make his point. For example, where sin is explained leading to death, grace is explained leading to our righteousness. 4
III. The Results of Adam vs. the Results of Jesus Rom 5:15-17 But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God's grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many! 16 Again, the gift of God is not like the result of the one man's sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification. 17 For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God's abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ. 18Consequently, just as the result of one trespass was condemnation for all men, so also the result of one act of righteousness was justification that brings life for all men. 19 For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous. The law was added so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more, 21 so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. A. The results of being hit with Adam s Two Punch Combo 1. Adams sin of disobedience effects many in that many were made sinners (vs. 15, 19). 2. Law was added so that sin would increase (vs. 20). 3. Death reigns, so man experiences death (vs. 17). 4. Judgment will follow, all men will experience the judgment of God and are left to be condemned (vs. 16, 18). 5
B. The results of Accepting the Two Punch Combo from Jesus 1. The gift of Jesus obedience overflows to the many and that many will be made righteous! Thus, the gift of righteousness brings forth our justification (vs. 15, 16, 19). Again, to be righteous means that we have strictly fulfilled all the demands that are required for being in right relationship with God without ever cutting any corners. In our case, Jesus was obedient to the strictest sense. As a result of his obedience, we receive the gift. 2. The gift is not like the curse of Adam in that with Jesus we receive God s abundant provision (vs. 17). 3. Whereas sin increased, grace now increases all the more (vs. 20). 4. Grace and the gift of righteousness reigns and triumphs over death (vs. 21). In case you missed this showdown in Romans, Paul gives the same similar narrative in 1 Cor. 15: Notice the parallel contrasts between the first Adam and Last Adam (Jesus) and what effects this has on us as believers. See the following page. 6
