3 Welcome to Saint John s Abbey Volunteer Program. The success of the Saint John s Abbey Volunteer Program depends on you, our volunteers, as well as on knowledgeable and dedicated Team Leaders. This collaborative work of service contributes to the ongoing ministries of the Abbey. History of Saint John s Abbey Saint John s Abbey was founded in 1856 to minister to the German Catholic immigrants in Central Minnesota. The number of monks peaked in 1963 with 404 Abbey members. Currently the community numbers about 125 with more than half over the age of 65. The Abbey is returning to a more self-sufficient life style with monks engaging in gardening, woodworking, arts and crafts and offering retreats at the Guest House. For a more in-depth account of the history of Saint John s Abbey, visit the website SJAbbey.org. Mission of Saint John s Abbey We, the monks Saint John s Abbey, a community of Catholic Benedictine men, seek God through a common life of prayer, study and work, giving witness to Christ and the Gospel, in service to the church and the world. Called together by Christ, we support each other under the Rule of Saint Benedict and our abbot. Our life together encourages learning, creativity in the arts and trades, and care for God s creation. We serve the Church and the wider community through our prayer and work in education, pastoral ministry, the missions, publishing, and in hospitality to people of all faiths. Mission of the Saint John s Abbey Volunteer Program The monks of Saint John s Abbey are active in diverse ministries throughout the community. The mission of the Volunteer Program is to invite lay people to partner with the monks in a collaborative effort. By complementing each other s skills, it is hoped that volunteers and monks alike will be rewarded through these experiences. The Vision The vision of the Volunteer Program is to be recognized as a source for connecting Saint John s Abbey with the wider community and assist particular Abbey departments and individuals with specific services or tasks.
4 Goals To provide a service experience that is mutually enriching and beneficial to volunteers and members of the monastic community. To encourage the formation of meaningful relationships between the monks and lay people by offering opportunities for volunteers to share their skills.
