3 Q95 In a few sentences, tell about an experience you had in the church where you walked away feeling, Now THAT S what it means to be the church! Answered: 99 Skipped: 81 # Responses Date 1 The bake auction 2/23/2016 5:33 AM 2 Does the above sentence make sense? 2/22/ :00 PM 3 A lady who I have never seen in church before started crying and a guy sitting next to her got some kleenex and consoled her. 2/22/ :57 PM 4 Participating in a service to observe the deaths in Chicago this year. 2/22/ :54 PM 5 All Saints Day interleaving the stories from prayer flags, and the stories of the Martyrs of Melanesia was very powerful. All Saints Cafe. 2/22/2016 9:55 PM 6 The ordination of Emily at All Saints was the Church at its vibrant best. 2/22/2016 9:31 PM 7 Crying through Bonnie's sermons. 2/22/2016 9:28 PM 8 On the feast of All Saints, easily finding the prayer flags that I made. 2/22/2016 9:21 PM 9 The ritual and a compelling sermon 2/22/2016 9:13 PM 10 It's the same story I tell people that ask me why I love All Saints. I remember the first time I heard Bonnie say "thank you" when the congregation replied "and also with you" and recognizing the connection she has with the members of the All Saints community. It's a small thing, but it made me feel like we were all on this spiritual journey together. 2/22/2016 8:59 PM 11 Volunteering on a tuesday night or listening to Bonnie's amazing sermons. 2/22/2016 8:49 PM 12 Fed a lot of people last week. 2/22/2016 8:48 PM 13 On a fairly regular basis Bonnie pulls me into the message of Christ and I feel very connected to my church. I would say the 2015 Christmas play was an outstanding event! Please note- when I first came to the church I felt really connected to the music. I don't feel that way anymore and it has been a turnoff. 14 I love singing the hymns. Singing "Just a Closer Walk With Thee" after the All Saints Day service fills my heart and makes me feel connected to the community. 2/22/2016 7:04 PM 2/22/2016 6:15 PM 15 I feel this way after every service 2/22/2016 5:57 PM 16 I would say the enthusiasm at the Annual Meetings, as well as other events where a large crowd would gather. 2/22/2016 5:35 PM 17 I believe I can change my world. 2/22/2016 5:27 PM 18 Africa Bake Auction! 2/22/2016 5:17 PM 19 Good music, good sermon, well done liturgy 2/22/ :48 PM 20 Emily's ordination service 2/22/ :58 AM 21 The recent discussion we had about racial inequality was outstanding. It provided a forum for congregants to have deep conversations, get to know one another better, and contribute to something concrete: the church's statement about racial justice. Proud of the church for engaging in all issues of social justice. 22 Our son being excited for Sunday School. The leaders reaching out to me after my Father died when we are just returning to the church for three months after many years away. 2/22/ :53 AM 2/22/2016 9:34 AM 23 The food pantry and Ravenswood Community Services. 2/22/2016 8:27 AM 24 Whenever Bonnie preaches I feel this way. I also often feel this way when others preach. 2/21/2016 9:39 PM 3 / 8
4 25 I feel that so often at All Saints' I can't really pin it down to one particular experience. Helping out on Tuesday nights, helping at the Saturday Pantry at Ravenswood School, listening to the sermons, watching the movie "Cracking the Codes," singing a variety of hymns from all over the world...i come to church each week, each experience and leave feeling refreshed, renewed, and more connected to the world. All Saints' is a place that walks the walk they talk, it is a refreshing. I feel at peace here and that I am contributing to the greater good. 26 The longer I attend and the more involved I am at All Saints, the more return for "my investment" I receive. A mix of local outreach, fostering the congregation and it's house of worship, and outreach to the world at large is rewarding and appropriate. 27 I felt that way after the service where we celebrated the removal of the scaffolding and completion of the first phase of the 1883 project. Bonnie celebrated the renovation, but very effectively tied it back to the racial justice issues that we as a congregation are wrestling with. It was very powerful and reminds me that we can't be satisfied with the state of our community and world should, not let ourselves off the hook about our privilege and have a lot of work to do. 2/21/2016 8:54 PM 2/21/2016 6:05 PM 2/21/2016 6:03 PM 28 Holy week services. 2/21/2016 5:52 PM 29 Everyone working together. Accepting all members. Caring about each other 2/21/2016 5:19 PM 30 Im so new to All Saints, that this is hard, but I believe it was Mike speaking about why he pledged on a day when it was incredibly cold and few people had attended. What he said struck me - I am also someone who has a focus on things non christian in my job and his comment on how All Saints was a refuge for him truly spoke to me. It allowed me to envision a place where I might be able to have similar refuge. 31 Each week I revel in the opportunity to stop thinking about all the small and large items floating around in my head so that I can concentrate on something larger than myself. But beyond the general appreciation for the opportunity to reconnect to God and have some quiet meditation, today, during communion, when Emily greeted me by name, I felt, for the first time in awhile, connected to my community. 2/21/2016 4:57 PM 2/21/2016 4:27 PM 32 Every time I worship or help out on a Tuesday, I feel that way. 2/21/2016 4:01 PM 33 The easy relaxed atmosphere and the all inclusive nature 2/21/2016 1:45 PM 34 I always enjoy there sermons that offer ideas to contemplate throughout the week. We have dynamic and outgoing ministry. 2/21/2016 1:43 PM 35 Lenten dinners and bake auction. 2/21/ :55 PM 36 Bake auction solemn communion 2/21/2016 5:57 AM 37 Generally speaking, as I have recently made a church switch, the overall experiences that I have encountered at All Saints have seemed to be a much better fit. Hopefully, the future will bring more complete confirmation of this! 2/20/2016 5:19 PM 38 Witnessing Emily's ordination was a special occasion and reinforced the idea of following gods teachings. 2/19/ :31 PM 39 Walking with the Black Lives Matter march, putting ourselves out there in our neighborhood to affirm this truth. Participating in the viewing and discussion of the systemic racism film. 40 New Orleans rebuild. Participating in original Crosswalk activities. participating in Race Matters discussions and activities. 41 Two come to mind. The first is Bonnie's annual address, and the work I've seen so far at All Saints under the leadership of the Race Matters committee to help us deal openly and seriously with the legacy of racism we carry as Americans. The second has been watching this community share the Eucharist. I don't know her name, but there's a woman in the Church who has a hard time walking, and I love seeing the communion servers take the elements to her where she's seated in the pew. I also love watching how children are embraced and welcomed to the table, along with all their youthful energy, and their lack of concern for edicate and convention. Watching All Saints share communion is beatiful. 2/19/ :39 PM 2/19/2016 9:37 PM 2/19/2016 7:56 PM 42 An awesome sermon that's personally meaningful, good music, talking with parishioners who I know. 2/19/2016 7:13 PM 43 After the race workshop on Saturday this past year and after Bonnie preaches on race. 2/18/2016 9:42 PM 44 The first Christmas Pageant I attended at All Saints' - the barely controlled chaos, the empowerment of the children, the dedication of the adults, and the translation of the Christmas story into something present and clearly relevant to our world today - all those elements, and more, felt to me to embody much of what All Saints' is about. 2/18/ :47 PM 45 When I hear the welcoming invitation of the celebrant for all to join at the table... 2/18/2016 9:29 AM 46 Graduating high school seniors delivered a collaborative message where they showed leadership and understanding of the text. They related the parable of what God asks us to do when things do not go as planned to their admission process - it was humbling in that these two young people grew so very much from the process and emerged stronger and more thoughtful. 2/18/2016 4:30 AM 4 / 8
5 47 When it impacts me personally (usually during the sermon), and I think differently about things, which then shift my attitude about something. It is then that I feel closer to God and that I give back to the world simply as a better person - in my everyday living. 48 This is the feeling I have every All Saints Day. Our son was baptized on All Saints Day and now the service brings me to tears with the feeling of community and the sense of the unity of past/present/future. I also have this feeling as our church tackles the very difficult issue of race relations and our role as Christians and as a church in ending the sin of racism. 49 I have felt this way after the Easter Vigil services last year and the year before. The storytelling made me feel connected with our ancient tales, celebrating resurrection and new life together made me feel connected to Christ, and, particularly at the vigil services, communion made me feel connected with the other members of the congregation present. 2/17/ :14 PM 2/17/2016 9:29 PM 2/17/2016 9:25 PM 50 What it means to be the church is the fact that it's not possible to answer this question and remain anonymous. 2/17/2016 9:24 PM 51 When Bonnie gives a thoughtful sermon that I can apply to my life 2/17/2016 7:46 PM 52 Participating in the anti-gun violence activities. 2/17/2016 6:44 PM 53 Almost every sermon preached by the rector. 2/17/2016 6:18 PM 54 singing hymns from the african-american hymnal; talking about true inclusion 2/17/2016 5:38 PM 55 All Saints' Day of the Dead 2/17/2016 4:49 PM 56 When the supreme court announced what we knew in our hearts: same sex marriage! :) 2/17/2016 3:36 PM 57 Last week's homily on the challenges of the poor and housing, along with a discussion of white privileges. 2/17/2016 1:34 PM 58 Last Sunday, after great music, preaching, fellowship, and time spent around the beehive of Atrium, I left church feeling buoyed and fulfilled. 2/16/2016 4:27 PM 59 Feeling welcome by people I have come to know 2/15/2016 6:03 PM 60 At the annual meeting, when we review our year, I always feel such a sense of accomplishment on behalf of the church. We really are taking small steps to make big changes in the world. 2/15/2016 8:11 AM 61 Recent discussion of race and privilege. 2/14/2016 1:43 PM 62 I'm glad we are focusing more on race. And continue to focus on social justice. 2/14/2016 1:42 PM 63 Recent conversations on race and faith 2/14/2016 1:15 PM 64 rebuilding in New Orleans after Katrina 2/14/ :40 AM 65 The everyday little things like a good sermon and my child talking about atrium or volunteering on Tuesday night 2/14/2016 6:33 AM 66 It was All Saints. Emily's ordination... 2/13/2016 2:18 PM 67 After most sermons by Bonnie... 2/13/ :07 PM 68 Participation in RCS 2/12/2016 5:57 PM 69 The rector's preaching and focus on institutional racism. 2/12/2016 5:24 PM 70 Every Tuesday we feed people and spend time together as a community, helping one another. 2/12/2016 4:53 PM 71 Africa Bake Auction 2/12/2016 4:42 PM 72 Emily's ordination was great, lots of liturgy 2/11/2016 6:20 PM 73 A congregation that is warm and friendly. A worship service that has meaningful and inspiring preaching and outstanding music. A church that lives out the scripture by giving back to the community. 74 I think I feel that way every week. I never thought I'd return to a 'mainline' church. I came seeking routine and found so much more, not just in the church itself and in others, but in the faith that has grown in me as a result: a wholly unintended consequence. 75 This applies to anything involving our young people. I love the way they are treated as full members of the church and everyone is invested in helping them along their budding spiritual journey. 76 Emily's ordination (I almost said coronation). It was truly one of the most moving experiences I've ever been involved in. 2/11/2016 2:39 PM 2/11/2016 2:18 PM 2/11/2016 6:36 AM 2/10/2016 4:56 PM 77 I like the prayer flags, volunteering Tuesday nights, and the great homilies. 2/10/ :59 AM 5 / 8
6 78 How my church is interested in feeding the needy. 2/10/ :45 AM 79 I have this experience through the Care Calendars, when we sign up to help each other in times of need. 2/9/ :16 PM 80 Rector's sermon was on our blindness and the need to get out of that zone to be present with God. 2/9/2016 9:44 PM 81 The rector's sermons. Sometimes the music. I don't tend to have any relationships w/ anyone in the church. I miss having a strong connection w/ anyone. When Small Group was functioning, I started feeling close to the members of the group. Unfortunately, w/ the departure of the facilitator and founder, the group fizzled. 82 Most recent Baptism Sunday, because the sermon reminded me how important the church is for my children's faith development and place in the world. 2/9/2016 5:47 PM 2/9/2016 5:05 PM 83 Every Sunday when I see and hear how at home the children in the congregation feel. 2/9/2016 4:59 PM 84 On one of the Sundays when parishioners were invited to ask questions of the staff, a child asked, "Why does God let bad things happen to people?" It wasn't so much what Bonnie said that impressed me (I don't recall exactly what she said.), but the way she went to her emotions in her response. Her eyes filled up with tears as she talked, and that made me feel like it's okay in this church to lament and not to sugarcoat or spiritualize the tragedies we experience in life. 85 When the church is packed and the kids are pulling off another amazing pageant. Or the parish Hall is packed and the kids are leading us in raising $20,000 for Sudan, or at the Easter Vigil and someone has just offered an interpretation of a scripture reading that invigorated or transformed or my previous understanding of the passage. 86 Seeing groups of folks take time out of the Sunday to discuss race and white privilege and wrestle with how to enact meaningful change and engage in healthy, life-giving relationships with our brothers and sisters of color. 2/8/2016 1:09 PM 2/8/ :48 AM 2/8/ :37 AM 87 Our rector's sermons frequently make me feel this way. 2/7/2016 7:58 PM 88 We can't decide if it's one of Bonnie's amazing sermons, volunteering at RCS, or participating in discussions regarding institutional racism. It's all good stuff! 2/7/ :37 AM 89 All Saints Day service connecting birth to life to death 2/6/2016 8:21 PM 90 I walked away with this feeling when we did an Open House two years ago, in the rain, and expected almost no one to show up given the weather. Unexpectedly, we had many, many more people walk in and remark on how interesting and engaging our church was, and even got a donation to the 1883 Project. We had a great time meeting new people and agreed to do it again the next year, where it was wildly successful. Our enthusiasm and energy in coordinating and running these Open Houses has always resonated with me as something important about our church. 91 The quiet holy services before Christmas on Wednesday nights. Services for the sad, services to remember gun violence victims, services just for somber contemplative worship, reminding us of the holiness of the season. 2/6/2016 6:04 PM 2/6/2016 5:14 PM 92 Singing Silent Night by candlelight at the midnight mass on Christmas Eve 2/6/2016 4:30 PM 93 Meeting a church staff member for lunch and some pastoral advice. 2/6/ :09 PM 94 Supporting a friend who has transitioning to transgender. All Saints' Cafe 2/6/ :34 AM 95 Christmas Eve- 2/6/2016 8:18 AM 96 My wedding and baptisms of my nieces and nephew were very important to me. Also Day of the Dead and Easter Vigil. 97 Several sermons really got me--particularly Bonnie' sermon in response to Syrian refugees and another about the church's response to gay rights vs. racial equity. 2/6/ :08 AM 2/5/2016 9:02 PM 98 I have that feeling every so often when Bonnie hits it out of the park. 2/5/2016 8:52 PM 99 To be very honest, it is hard to pick one. The quirky nature of this places leaves me feeling that way, the Day of the Dead service makes me feel that way, the Palm Sunday procession makes me feel that way. 2/5/2016 7:16 PM 6 / 8
