3 New Year, The Same New You. Each year, foolishly I like many of you, make a New Year s Eve Resolution. I promise that This will be the year, this year will be different, I will be better this year Try as I might, these changes never seems to happen. The small or simple changes seem to last a little longer than the big promises. However, sooner or later, habits seem to go back to the way things were. This year as we reflect on the year ahead, I am sure that many of you also made resolutions or promises. The most common resolutions tend to be ideas like, eat better, be more active, save more money. Then again, statistically speaking half of us will fail in the first six months. Despite this, I would like to present to you an even bigger challenge, to become a better Christian. As Colossians 3 command of us: Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices Now that is a New Year s Resolution. To take all of the ways that are opposed to God and put them to death. As Christians we are called not to live like the world wants us to be, but to live like Jesus, to live according to God s standards. Too often, however, we can slip back into the ways of the world around us. Here is the glorious news! God has already done all the work to make you new! All of our failings at bettering ourselves, while good intended is nothing compared to the new you that God has made. Ephesians 4 declares: to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. You already are a new person in Jesus, despite not living like it. So why bother? Why keep on trying to make yourself better if God has already done it all? Because in putting on the new you in your baptism, you have been clothed with Jesus righteousness. Baptism has made you in the likeness of God. A righteousness and holiness that will shine forth forevermore. All of the work that we do here and now is to be your true God given self. Living that true self, expresses glory and honor to God. You show who and what you are with how you live your life now. This is why we are called to live as a new creation that was given in baptism. When we fail once again in our new life in Christ, we can be tempted to give up. Instead, remember who you are in Christ, who you are in your baptism. To not give up on the good that (Continued on page 4) - 3 -
4 (Continued from page 3) God has called us to do. As a forgiven people, we should always be striving to make a resolution for the Christian life continually. As Ephesians 4 put it: Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. So, let us join together as those that are new in God, let us work together both this year and the years to come at living the new life that we have been given. It was suggested that the elders should have a monthly message and or report for the Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church news letter. It was also suggested that I should write the first edition. One of the problems was knowing what an elder should be doing. At the suggestion of interim pastor David Blair the elders began to read and review a book titled, Pastors and Elders: Caring for the Church and One Another. I have to admit, so far it has been slow going but each of the five elders have been reading and reviewing each chapter and we are now on chapter four. A description in chapter three of how we should conduct ourselves is a quote from The Apostle Paul s letter to The Philippians 2:1-3, So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, and Affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. In order for all of us in this congregation to work together but even more so if one is an elder or Pastor, a point was made that we must learn to trust one another and recognize the dominate personality traits in ourselves as well as each other. We are moving forward and trying to be good elders to assist our new pastor and serve the needs of our congregation. One of the first items on our list is to compile an accurate list of home bound members, so if any of you have knowledge of anyone that falls into this category please contact the church office with the person s name and phone number. Once we have this list we can serve their needs as well. We have identified in what spirit we must work together and how we are progressing in our quest to know how to become good elders, with God s help we will continue along this path. One item that has been brought to my attention is that many in the congregation do not know who the elder are. For future reference the five elders at present are; Paul Muhle, Phil Zafft, Don Ronfeldt, William Kittler and I, Marvin Pascual. If anyone has any suggestion how we can better serve this church please feel free to contact anyone of us. Marvin Pascual - 4 -

Notice the time changes for the January gatherings. When: Saturday, January 5, 2019 Time: 9:15-10:30 Where: Luther Inn Coffee and Bible Study Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World - Chapter 5 ************************************************* When: Saturday, January 19, 2019 Time: 9:00-11:00 Where: Luther Inn Light Breakfast, Fellowship and Bible Study Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World During an evening worship service on Thursday, December 20 th the BSL School children (Birth Pre- Kindergarten) gathered with their families to tell the story of the birth of Jesus as found in the Bible. Using bells, songs, chants, poems, and dances the children told their families and friends about Jesus who came as a baby and grew to be the Savior of all.
8 Children wore candle bracelets as they sang the school s theme song: This Little Light of Mine, I m Going to Let It Shine! At the end of the service, everyone sang Happy Birthday to Jesus and families took photos near the large Christmas tree and nativity scene. A slice of Birthday cake for Jesus was served in the Parish Hall where families and teachers enjoyed fellowship together. The school also gave each child a Christmas gift of the Bible story book of Jesus birth. It was a happy way for families, children and teachers to gather and celebrate before Christmas break. The BSL School Teaching Team were blessed by the kind words and encouragement that congregation members shared through the Christmas cards. Thank you for remembering the team during this time of the year! We appreciate all your support, prayers and thoughtfulness. May God continue to guide and bless us as we partner with one another to help BSL Church and School be a shining light to the families in our community. Together we can make a significant difference!
