2 From the Prefect of the Traditional Latin Mass Society of San Francisco Dearest Friends, Once again, Holy Mother Church starts a new Liturgical Year through the Season of Advent. This new beginning has always been one of expectation, prayer, and penance. I intend to reproduce here the introduction to the Season of Advent found in The Roman Missal which encapsulates the whole beauty of this season. The Liturgical texts used during the four weeks of the season of Advent remind the faithful of the Absence of Christ. The Collects of Advent do not end with, through our Lord Jesus Christ, as during the rest of the year. In a spirit of penance and prayer we await the Mediator, the God-Man, preparing for His coming in the flesh, and also for His second coming as our Judge. The Masses for Advent strike a note of preparation and repentance mingled with joy and hope; hence, although the penitential purple is worn and the Gloria is omitted, the joyous Alleluia is retained. The readings from the Old Testament contained in the Introit, Gradual, Offertory, and Communion of the Masses taken mostly from the prophecies of Isaias and from the Psalms, give eloquent expression to the longing of all nations for a Redeemer. We are impressed by repeated and urgent appeals to the Messias: Come, delay no longer. The Lessons from St. Paul urges us to dispose ourselves fittingly for His coming. The Gospels describe the terrors of the Last Judgment, the Second Coming, and tell of the Preaching of St. John the Baptist to prepare the way of the Lord. In Advent, the Greek Church celebrates particularly the ancestors of Our Lord all the Patriarchs and Prophets of the Old Testament, but especially Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The Latin Church also mentions them often in this period. In the Breviary, many texts are taken from Isaias (Introit of the second Sunday, Communion of the third Sunday). The idea of Advent is Prepare you for the coming of Christ. Therefore the very appeals of the Patriarchs and Prophets are put in our mouths in Advent. Prepare for the coming of Christ the Redeemer, who comes to prepare for His Second Coming as Judge. When the oracles of the Prophets were fulfilled and the Jews awaited the Messias, John the Baptist left the desert and came to the vicinity of the Jordan, bringing a baptism of penance to prepare souls for the coming of Christ. The world took him to be the Messias, but he replied with the words of Isaias: I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness: prepare ye the way of the Lord. The Incarnation is the central doctrine of Christianity; The Word was made Flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:14). God assumed our flesh, body and soul in order to redeem us. The obligations imposed on humans by God s condescension are staggering. The elevation and healing of human nature are also implied. St. Athanasius tells us, That which was made of earth can now pass through the gates of heaven. Let me end this letter with St. Bonaventure: If you could see the sweet embrace of the Virgin and the woman who had been sterile and hear the greeting in which the tiny servant recognized his Lord, the herald his Judge, and the voice his Word, then I am sure you would sing in sweet tones with the Blessed Virgin that sacred hymn: My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my Spirit hath rejoice in God my Saviour Laudetur Jesus Christus! AJ Garcia Prefect TLM Society of San Francisco Women s Evening of Recollection Every 2 nd Thursday of the month at Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church 7pm-9pm. 2 Meditations given by a priest, a spiritual talk, Benediction and confessions. However, for December -- Women s Recollection will be on December 5 (1 st Thursday). 2 P age

3 Chaplain s Corner: Romans 13:14 Abjiciamus ergo opera tenebrarum, et induamur arma lucis; Let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light. Luke 21:33 Coelum et terra transibunt; verba autem mea non transibunt: Heaven and earth shall pass away: but My words shall not pass away. Dear Parishioners and Friends, On the first Sunday of Advent the Church begins a new Church year. Once again we begin to come in contact with the central mysteries of our faith. Actually we are invited to respond in faith to God, who lives. We are drawn into His Being. This is not done in a merely nostalgic way or in a way that merely recalls events of long past. No, the Church believes that in its sacred liturgy what happened then happens now. Yes, the circumstances change from century to century, but the deep reality of God s revelation and Who He is remain the same. He reaches out to us through the sacred liturgy in His Church for the sake of souls. We must keep in mind that the Truth does not change. It cannot. However, since faith must seek understanding we can develop by God s assistance in our personal understanding of what is eternal. We change; God cannot. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to study and pray over all that God has revealed in the Sacred Scriptures and in Tradition, living the faith in the Church. We are not free to change what has been handed down to us. We discover what is there and has always been there. The Advent season is clearly derived from the Latin word advenire, which is a dynamic, active coming. In the history of salvation God has revealed to us that He comes as the God-man in three specific ways: 1.) The First Coming at the Annunciation at the moment of His conception, and then made manifest at His Birth; 2.) He always stands ready to come into our pure hearts here and now; 3.) He will return at the end of the world. This is His Second Coming. The major obstacle to having the Lord draw near to us is mortal sin. However, the worst sin is not to reject God, but to refuse to step in His direction, to refuse to come into His light. The rejection of the Light is far worse than embracing the darkness. To reject Love is far worse than accepting hate. That is the direction our Scriptures point out to us. We must have on the armor of God, the armor of light, to come into the light and live forever in the light. We must be obedient souls that take seriously God s proper and justified demands from us, His commandments, if we wish to see them fulfilled forever in Heaven. Heaven is for the obedient, not the disobedient, i.e. for the faithful, not the unfaithful. Jesus is the Mediator and Model of fidelity. Through Him. with Him, and in Him we find the answer to our deepest longings. We find perfect Love. Jesus comes. Advent presents that reality to us. Let us let Him come into our hearts, minds, and souls so as to be happy in this world and forever in the next. A good and faithful Advent will take us in that direction. At Christmas may we be able to say that we are living in Christ the light, in fact, we are the light of Christ to others in a real and true way. Yours in the Lord, The Rev. Mark G. Mazza ***The Rorate Mass at Star of the Sea will be celebrated on December 18 (Wednesday, 6:30PM) by Fr. Anselm Ramelow in the Dominican Rite. Volunteers are needed to help light hundreds of candles! 6 Mass Propers for the First Sunday of Advent: December 1, 2013 Introit Ps 24:1-3 To You I lift up my soul: in You, O my God, I trust; let me not be put to shame; let not my enemies exult over me. No one who waits for You shall be put to shame. Ps 24:4 Your ways, O Lord, make known to me; teach me Your paths. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. Collect Put forth Your power, O Lord, we beseech You, and come, that with You as our protector we may be rescued from the impending danger of our sins; and with You as our deliverer, may we obtain our salvation. Who livest and reignest with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Epistle Rom 13:11-14 Brethren: Understand, for it is now the hour for us to rise from sleep, because now our salvation is nearer than when we came to believe. The night is far advanced; the day is at hand. Let us therefore lay aside the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light. Let us walk becomingly as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in debauchery and wantonness, not in strife and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ. Gradual Ps 24:3-4 No one who waits for You shall be put to shame. Your ways, O Lord, make known to me; teach me Your paths. Alleluia, alleluia. Ps 84:8 Show us, O Lord, Your kindness, and grant us Your salvation. Alleluia. Gospel Luke 21:25-33 At that time, Jesus said to His disciples: There will be signs in the sun and moon and stars, and upon the earth distress of nations bewildered by the roaring of sea and waves; men fainting for fear and for expectation of the things that are coming on the world; for the powers of heaven will be shaken. And then they will see the son of Man coming upon a cloud with great power and majesty. but when these things begin to come to pass, look up, and lift up your heads, because your redemption is at hand. And He spoke to them a parable. Behold the fig tree, and all the trees. When they now put forth their buds, you know that summer is near. Even so, when you see these things coming to pass, know that the kingdom of God is near. Amen I say to you, this generation will not pass away till all things have been accomplished. Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away. Offertory Ps 24:1-3 To You I lift up my soul: in You, O my God, I trust; let me not be put to shame; let not my enemies exult over me. No one who waits for You shall be put to shame. Secret May these offerings, O Lord, cleanse us by their mighty power and thus make us come purer before You Who are their author. Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Communion Antiphon Ps 84:13 The Lord will give His benefits: and our land shall yield its increase. Post Communion May we receive Your mercy, O Lord, in the midst of Your temple, and thus prepare with due observance for the coming festal season of our redemption. Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. 6 P age
