Baucum, D.Min. Fax: Class Hours: 2 tbaucum@centurytel.net Course Purpose The purpose of this course is to provide the student with an overview of the doctrine of man, sin and covenantal theology. The class will include a study of the following: The nature of humanity, the image of God, Original Sin and Sin s Effect, the Covenant of Works, Redemption and introduction to the Nature of Jesus Christ. Objectives: 1. To recognize and affirm biblical understanding of the nature of humanity and its contemporary relevance in light of modernism, liberalism, feminism and current ministry issues in the evangelical church. 2. To learn and understand the historical formulations of the theologies of man, sin, and the covenant of works and redemption. 3. To appreciate the value of covenantal theology as a coherent and biblical view of understanding man in relation to God. 4. To develop an accurate historical understanding of one's own theological position 5. To apply theological truth in practical contexts such as preaching, teaching, and evangelism Required Texts: Louis Berkhof, Systematic Theology. Eerdmans, one volume ed., Hoekema, Anthony. Reformed Confessions Harmonized. (this helps to have all the major Confessions from the Reformed period in one resource). Wayne Grudem, Systematic Theology (a recent and very readable Reformed treatment from a baptistic/charismatic viewpoint). Stanley Grenz, The Pocket Dictionary of Theological Terms, IVP ($8.00) A handy tool to have as you read Kelly and Berkhof.

Class attendance and participation is expected. 2. Reading the texts and assigned readings. This is expected to be done before class. 3. Completion of the written projects described below. 4. All papers are to use the Turabian style of writing; doublespaced, 12 point, Time New Roman font. Please read the BTS handbook for requirements. Project #1: Develop a Bible study which summarizes either the doctrine of man or the doctrine of sin and emphasizes the practical application of particular theological truth within that doctrine. Submit the study (typed!) to the instructor. Project #2: Prepare a research paper of 1215 pages in which either the doctrine of man, nature sin or theology of the covenant. Final exam: The exam will consist of 60% objective questions and 40% essay questions. All questions will be taken from assigned readings or materials discussed in class. BTS FORMAT AND STYLE STANDARDS NOTE: All papers must be formatted in accordance with Turabian Chicago standards including the title page. Any paper not conforming to these standards will automatically be dropped one letter grade. #12 Times New Roman font and double spacing is required on all papers. All course materials must be submitted to the professor at the end of the semester (last day of class). Thereafter, course materials may be submitted for up to six weeks after the end of the semester directly to the office of the registrar with the permission of the professor. If a student submits course materials after the end of the semester but within the six week grace period, the student s grade will be lowered by one letter grade. The course materials will not be accepted after the six week grace period and a failing grade will be posted to the student s transcript.

A wonderful and yet sinister look at the way temptation works in the life of a believer. This is good moral theology expressed from the devil s point of view in the letters of a senior demon. Lewis means not to take the devil s work lightly, but as believers we ought not take him too seriously either. Luther said the best way to drive out the devil is to laugh at him. Scougal, Henry.
