Fun ride! Nostalgic time capsule back to the 90's By CarmenJones You ever wake up in bed and hear your older brothers reminisce abt the people and things they've done in their past? You know u shouldn't listen but it's just too juicy and at the end u wind up discovering many layers to their personalities and revelations abt their past experience. And you never quite view your pain in rear brothers quite the same again. That s the way I felt reading Demetrius s book detailing his relationship with the infamous musical genius known as R.Kelly. The book does not paint Kelly in the most flattering light, but I found it refreshing that the author in detailing Kelly's character flaws refuses to paint Kelly as a mere monster but a deeply troubled man who was affected by many internal demons, he's sympathetic towards his subject when It would been easy to drop venom from his pen. Page after page we witness Kelly's erratic, often childish, bazaar antics and his manipulative ploy of using money and fame as means of controlling people and the world around him. I wondered why Demetrius put up with such utter disrespect. My answer would be that after all the hard work and essentially being the business brains behind the genius, Demetrius himself gets caught up in the seductive glamour that stardom affords and he allows himself to be used and another victim of Kelly s masterful manipulation. Kelly clearly views him as nothing but another stair to climb in reaching success and a chess piece to move around at whim, although, none of those hits and the image of R. Kelly in the early 90 s never would have come to fruition without Demetrius working in the background. As often the case of genius individuals they have the habit of seeing the pedestal others place them on and they in turn become blind to the needs of others, feeling that them sharing their gifts to the world is payment enough, and THEY in turn expect to be paid back and they often take payments in the form of using people for their pleasure and gain..

6 Kelly's self-payment also takes the form of abusing underage girls, like the pied piper (which he stupidly nicknames himself), Kelly uses his fame and musical gifts as a tool to lure children away and often lead them on the roads of abuse and self-destruction. It's all there in the book, but the authors refusal to exploit the salacious aspects, forces the reader to do a lot of reading between the lines. What I valued most in the author is when he doesn't know something or has the full details he admits that he doesn't know instead of making up lies or exploiting the situation, Demetrius I commend for that (smile). The Aaliyah portions were handled as delicately as possible with the utmost respect for everyone involved. I do wish we could have gotten the full details surrounding the cause of the marriage, "was Aaliyah pregnant? Or was it an STD that caused her cycle to delay forcing Kelly's had to marry her to save himself from possible jail time? Did Aaliyah ever talk to him again before her death? Did she realize that she was just another groomed victim? The author doesn't know, or didn't feel comfortable enough to say which I respect and totally understand. The one aspect of the book I didn t enjoy was reading about the number of bed partners he and Kelly had, as a woman I really didn t enjoy reading about those sordid details or the authors own practice of the old aged brown paper rule when it came to describing a woman s beauty. As a light skinned biracial woman myself it still made me kind of uncomfortable to read that just about every woman he deems to be drop dead gorgeous was light skinned or looked like Mariah Carey, lol. It was just cringe worthy and makes for plenty of eye rolling and page skipping. All in all tho the book was a pretty fun ride and at its cost, it s certainly worth it. It s like a time capsule back into the 90 s when music was good and everyone just wanted to have fun. Demetrius charm as a man and a writer instantly draws you, I certainly wouldn t want to be left alone with him for over an hour as he literally drips charm and is immensely likeable in a childlike I just want to protect and love him kind of way. I also loved the Gerald Levert portion. Being a Cleveland girl I knew Gerald very well, and was almost signed for a girl trio with his label when I was 17, but my mother refused to let me sign as she knew I had very strong feelings for Levert and vice versa and my father would have gone off, but that s another book 8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Excellent read By Joyce Kitchen I recommend this book for everyone but especially young people who are interested in pursuing careers in the entertainment/arts fields. I also think it is ideal for those who have family members struggling with drugs/alcohol. The author is honest, insightful and transparent in his recounting of his life and the lives of those that he was involved with.
