1 PROF. R. L. DUNBABIN Robert Leslie Dunbabin ( ), MA. (Oxford) was Professor of Classics and was appointed first in as lecturer in mental & moral science and in 1906 lecturer in classics, modern history and mental and moral science. He was educated at Hutchins School, Hobart, and Corpus Christi College, Oxford, where he graduated B.A. in In he taught at Melbourne Church of England School, then at Hutchins School, Hobart In 1905 he was temporary Associate Professor of Classics at the University of Adelaide. Professor Dunbabin's archives inc:lude his notes for lectures, mainly on classics, as a lecturer or professor at the University of Tasmania, his lecture notes and essays while a student at Oxford University and a few from his schooldays, some copies and notes of lectures by colleagues, including Professor W. Mitchell of Adelaide University on philosophy, psychology and economics, Professor W. H. Williams and Professor D. G. Mcdougall, and a catalogue of the Univerity's Greek and Roman coin collection. There is some general correspondence and catalogues of his personal library. Records of the Classical Association of Tasmania, founded in September 1928, are with Professor Dunbabin's papers for the period when he was secretary and then President. Professor Dunbabin offered his personal library and notebooks to the University in The library has been kept together in the University Library's Rare Books and Special Collections section (except for bound copies of University exam papers which are part of the record set of University publicati'ons in the University Archives) The notebooks and other archives are kept in the University Archives. They consist of some 213 quarto notebooks of lecture and study notes etc., often re -used for a different subject at a later date, and some general correspondence etc. The notebooks were listed in detail by Professor Dunbabin in 1941 (see UT24/9.15, then including 246 notebooks) and he numbered each one inside the cover. However, although they were kept in the same order in the University Library, the notebooks and other archives were later given a very complicated system of reference numbers including series numbers and sub-numbers. For example the accession reference number of the Dubabin Archives is UT24 and a series of notebooks for lectures on classics has the series number 12 and then item numbers 1-38 and in some cases volume numbers also - thus notes on Demosthenes in two volumes are cited: UT24/12.9(1,2). Readers are warned, therefore to note reference numbers in the list with especial care.
