A good overview highlighting just how complex this topic is By Malleus Maleficarum In summarizing this book, it's probably most apt to start off with the beginning of the author's chapter on Conclusions - to his credit, he admits that there is no single overarching theme of this book and he also admits that the nature of the topic is such that the lack of consensus around many themes ensures that any

8 reader going through this book is unlikely to come away with strong convictions about anything. However, that should not distract from the quality of this book which is very commendable to get an overview of the interactions between the Roman Empire and 'barbarians' over nearly 6 centuries. One of the few themes running through this book is that the Roman and barbarian worlds held mutual contempt and fascination for each other and the dynamics and interaction between them changed both. The book should serve to caution any reader against an Us vs Them generalization and this is not out of any sense of political correctness but because the reality of barbaro-roman interactions were generally complex. The Roman Empire was an ever present reality for tribes which lay outside Roman territory and there were strong cultural, political, military and inter-personal linkages between them that fundamentally transformed both - in fact, the Roman Empire created the Germanic world in many ways. The political imprint of the Roman Empire on the Germanic world is visible even today - the country I live in Switzerland, essentially consists of Alamanni and Burgundians settled into former Roman territory - the boundary between the German and French speaking parts almost exactly correspond to their respective areas of settlement. Also fascinating is the fact that both of these Germanic groups represent the differential impacts of Rome on Germanic tribes - the Alamanni continue to speak a Germanic language while the Burgundians speak a Latin one. The Franks who laid the foundations of the French state lost their Germanic tongue and adopted the language of their Romano-Gallic subjects but the Angles and the Saxons who invaded Britain imposed their Germanic language on their Romano - British subjects (leaving out of course the areas that continue to have remnants of Brythonic languages). Overall, I think this book will be a great help for someone looking to understand how the interplay between tribes and the Roman Empire with their shifting geographic locations, their on and off alliances and enmities and their cultural and religious interactions served to create the modern Europe that we see today.
