PIP S SISTER S DEATH Great Expectation By Charles Dickens English Literature Novel Chapter 15, 16, 34, 35 Q. Describe the death of PIP s sister and his reaction of PIP. A. PIP was extremely prostrate with the poignancy of what had become of his sister. She had died due to an unknown, unperceived man who had supposedly assailed her, which had resulted in the catastrophic death. PIP had been simmering with bubbling, smouldering rage against the impalpable man or felon. He craved for retaliation or reprisal against the imperceptible assailant who still remained elusive and at large. He was resolved not to spare the person concerned, whoever he might be, he might be orlick or anyone else, he would keep running at his heels, because orlick might be the prime suspect who might have perpetrated the gruesome crime killing his sister. Resentment had been 1

festering in his heart for the outrage done to her. He seemed to be groping for the feasible way to assuage his unappeasable appetite for vengeance. She had not been cherished deep in his heart, she being domineering and overbearing. She had ridden roughshod over him; she had overborne him with tyranny. Nonetheless now he cherished her memory which kept haunting him relentlessly night and day. In his contemplation she surfaced as if he had seen her sitting in her chair by the kitchen fire. She seemed as though she were in the street, in the rooms, in London, where she had not set her foot on. She seemed to have been intertwined with everything in his sight. He felt her voice palpably ringing in his ears with her tangible presence in his rooms ceaselessly. He perceived her all around him in perpetuity as if she were alive. It was extremely agoniging for PIP to accept the fact that he was bereft of his sister by a tragic, grim crime. His bereaved soul was afflicted with the void caused by sister s death. He had evidently deep love and tender feelings and high respect for his sister beneath the exterior of fear, awe. 2

The occasion that had preceded this trigic event was that Mr Joe had granted half holiday to PIP who had wanted to see Mrs. Havisham, though his real desire being to see Estella. On knowing the matter Orlick, who was the assistant of joe, had demanded the half holiday. Mrs. Joe had been indignant to hear Joe grant the holiday. She had come up there to interfere. Her interposition had triggered off an altercation between her and Orlick, who was ill-tempered, stubborn, impertinent and not to yield. Eventually the wrangle had culminated in brawl and fist fight : between Orlick and Mr Joe and Joe had felled him down, striking him hard enough. On the same day in the evening having Joe and PIP got back home, they had found Mrs Joe lying prostrate on the floor. However, she had survived the assault. From the chain of events that had occurred it might be conjectured that Orlick could have been the assailant. The police had been making sedulous, persistent effort to hunt down the hidden fiend, but all the effort had been rendered futile. They had not found any one, nor any lead as yet whereby they might have apprehended the real offender. However, pip 3

suspected the convict or the strangeman who had shown him the file at the three jolly Bargeman. The police had found a convict s leg iron that had been long ago filed asunder but that had not been worn by either of the two convicts who had escaped from the prison ship previous night. After the event she had been absolutely confined to bed, rendered incapacitated, dumb, speechless, incapable of uttering a word, her hearing impaired, she could barely hear clearly enough, her memory had seemed to have been lost. She wrote on a slate given to her what she had wanted to say as she could not speak. Joe had chosen a suitable attendant biddy- for her in her state of illness. She had turned out to be perfect and deligent in the discharge of her responsibilities assigned to her. She, while scribbling across the slate, had drawn a figure that had looked like a hammer. Biddy had reckoned that the figure might be presumed to be a symbol concerned with the forge a likelyhood being with Orlick with whom she had wanted to speak. Accordingly, Orlick had been brought in. 4

Strangely enough, she had appeared to be well disposed towards Orlick, not even had she manifested choleric disposition, nor had she been peevish, querulous towards Orlick, rather quite affable, such behavior of Gargery had seemed to be quite perplexing to PIP because such genial, mannerly temperament of hers was absolutely contrary to her ingrained resentful nature. In the meanwhile a long span of time had elapsed with many events running, making the smooth easy course of the story. Yet, no chance of recovery, nor a flickering hope of her survival had been discernible, her condition had become all the more pitiable. A great change had taken place in PIP s life; he had gone to London to stay up there, leaving his country home, pastoral setting and ever since had been living, there, leading extremely extravagant life, spending the money he obtained from his benefactor through his lawyer Jaggers. One day he had received a letter signed by Trabb & Co which had apprised him of the fact that his sister had died last Monday and the funeral would be held on next Monday (chap- 34,35) on the Day fired for the funeral, pip, boarding a coach, went down to his 5

native town and got off at the Blue Boar. He attended the funeral, giving condolences to distressed, bereaved Joe. A Pall of somber air pervaded the whole scene. Biddy, clad in mourning clothes, conducted the funeral precisely enough. Mr. Pumblechwok, Mr. & Mrs. Hubble were present there. PIP (deeply) poignantly grieved over the death of Mrs. Gargery. The way she had treated with PIP was very harsh, she had dominated, rather tyrannized over him. She had been evidently irate resentful, petulant, domineering, always nettlesome over trifles. Yet, he could not forget that his sister had brought him by her hand with motherly care and strictness without motherly kindness. Her contribution to his life was not to be forgotten. He inwardly expressed a great deal of gratitude and respect to her, cherishing her memory in his heart perpetually. 6
