Name: Class: Unit: My Hero Yr7

Lesson 01 - What is a hero? Annotate the characteristics of a hero

Using a dictionary write the meaning of the two following words: EXPLICIT IMPLICIT Lesson 02 - Read the following Hercules was half man and half god. His mother was a mortal. But his father was a king - a very special king, the king of all the gods, the mighty Zeus. But Hercules did not know he was part god until he had grown into a man. Hercules had a cousin named Eurystheus (Eury for short). Eury was the king of a little village in the city-state of Argos. Eury was an evil man. He thought everyone wanted to steal his crown, especially Hercules. One day, when Heraand Eury were chatting about their mutual hatred for Hercules, Hera came up with a plan - a plan to kill Hercules! Hera helped Eury design 12 Labors (missions or tasks) that Hercules had to complete. Supposedly, when Hercules had completed the 12 Labors, he would earn his immortality, or so Hera promised. But really, Hera and Eury were certain that one of their "labors" would surely kill Hercules, probably the very first one. Hercules was no fool. He asked the Oracle at Delphi if this was a smart thing to do. The oracle agreed that it was. Actually, the oracle had said, "If you complete 12 Labors, immorality will be yours." Being an oracle, she never explained what she meant by "immortality" - would he live forever in legend or for real? Hercules never asked. (She would not have told him anyway.) Hercules not only lived, he had great adventures, discovered true friends, and rid the world of some really nasty critters.

Now go back and underline / circle or highlight EXPLICIT ideas/facts about Hercules. List 4 EXPLICIT about Hercules Now can you find 4 IMPLICIT ideas about Hercules Lesson 03 - Now red the following about Achilles. Achilles was the son of Peleus and Thetis: Peleus was a king in Greece, and Thetis was a nymph. When Achilles was still a little baby, his mother tried to protect him from harm by dipping him into a river that had special magic water. And it worked; he could not be harmed, except for one heel that his mother held him by as she dipped him in the water. Now when someone is very strong but has one weak spot, we call that their "Achilles' heel." (This story is related to an Indian story from about the same time of Krishna and Duryodhana from the Maharabata, and to the later medieval story of Siegfried.

Maybe all three stories come from an earlier Indo-European story, or maybe these people just heard each others' stories.) When he grew up, Achilles heard a prophecy. It was this: he could make a choice to live quietly and without fame or honor, and live a long time and die in bed, or he could choose to be famous in his lifetime and remembered always, but to die young. What would you choose? Achilles chose to be famous and die young. He lived through the events of Homer's Iliad, but then (according to some stories), killing the Trojan prince Hector, but then Hector's youngest brother, Paris, shot Achilles in the heel with an arrow and killed him. Later when Odysseus met Achilles in the underworld, Achilles was maybe not as happy with his decision. He said it was better to be alive, even if you were poor and miserable, than to be dead. List 4 things you learn about Achilles indicate if they are Explicit or Implicit ideas

are usually adjectives, or phrases that have used particular techniques to conjure up a specific image. Now go back to the two articles on Hercules and Achilles select at least two/words phrases from each article and write them here then mind map the importance of the words: Hercules Write word/phrase here Achilles Write word/phrase here
