Having sold his ancestral estate of Nowosiółki, he emigrated to America in His wife, Mary, was the daughter of his distant relation General Wincenty Horain. He eventually settled in San Francisco, where he ran an office supply store. On the centenary of the United States, he published in English, "A Symbolic Chart of American History in a Hundred Columns" (in 1883 a Polish edition was advertised in Kraków). He returned to his homeland in 1880, settled first in Lwów, then later in Kraków, where he died. His abundant literary production consisted mainly of short stories and columns, run first and foremost in The Polish Gazette [Gazeta Polska ]. In 1876, he and Henryk Sienkiewicz met in San Francisco. He guided the writer into the arcane life of California, along with the Polish colony's milieu in San Francisco. He gave him the idea of writing "The Lighthouse Keeper."

Along with Peter Wereszczyński he worked on the project "New Polish independent in New Guinea" and the Polish autonomous area in California, but both ideas foundered for lack of funds. In 1880 he returned to Europe and settled under Austrian rule, first in Lwów, then in Kraków.
