Boekverslag door een scholier 3794 woorden 3 september ,7 10 keer beoordeeld Auteur Genre J.R.R. Tolkien Avonturenroman Eerste uitgave 1955 Vak Engels J.R.R Tolkien The Lord of the Rings III. The return of the King Unwin Paperbacks, Fifth impression 1977 Introduction The books are set in a medieval sort of time in a fantasy world called Middle-Earth. Middle-Earth is divided into several countries with all different races and various tongues. There are many kinds of creatures like Dwarves, Elves, Orcs, Hobbits, Goblins, Wargs, Uruk-Hai and many more. The Lord of the Rings is Sauron, an evil lord who made 21 magic rings which he - all but one - gave away: Three Rings for The Elven-kings under the sky, Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone, Nine for the Mortal Men doomed to die, One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie. One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie. This One Ring was cut from his finger by Isildur, a prince of the Men. Sauron wants his Ring back at any cost. The only way to destroy this Ring is to throw it in the fire where it has been created. This fire is Mount Doom a volcano in Mordor the Black Land of Sauron, a place of death were no-one dares to dwell. Middle-Earth In Eriador it was always safe till now but Sauron knows the Ring is in the Shire so he sends his Nazgûl to find the Ring. In the west of Eriador lies Lindon. From that land the Elves flee to the Undying-Lands. In the ancient days Arnor lied in Eriador. It was a land of the Men and it was a strong and beautiful. After Isildur's death the Dunedain, his heirs and rangers who wanted and still want to protect Arnor came to live over there but the Witch-king destroyed Arnor long ago. In the East of Eriador are the Misty Mountains. At the other side of the Misty Mountains lies Rhovanion or Pagina 1 van 7

Wild land. Over here are Lórien and Mirkwood, two forests where Elves live and many lonely or little groups of mountains are. In the south are Gondor, Rohan and the evil country Mordor. Rohan was almost always safe from war but in Gondor there was always the threat of Mordor. Now Sauron, the lord of Mordor, has returned to his black tower Barad-dûr. From now on he attacks Gondor again. Normally, Gondor gets help from Rohan but this time Rohan is under attack by Sauron s helper Saruman. Sauron gets also help of the wicked men from Rhûn, Harad and the city of the Corsairs of Umbar. Main Characters Aragorn, or Strider is the only heir on the throne of Gondor. He left a long time ago. He is afraid to go back to his country because he has the same blood as one of his ancestors, who almost caused the return of Sauron. Aragorn is the only hope for the people of Middle-Earth. Legolas, is an elf and the prince of Mirkwood. Together with Gimli he has a competition about who kills the most enemies. Gimli, the son of Gloin is a dwarf. He is one of the most important dwarves because he is a member of the council of Elrond. He lives in Erebor, a huge mountain where his grandfather lived. The dwarves were defeated by the dragon Smaug. About sixty years ago the fellowship of fourteen dwarves and the hobbit Bilbo defeated Smaug. Frodo Baggins, a hobbit from the Shire, a landscape with many green hills and ponds. He is Bilbo s nephew. He always dreams of adventures. His best friends are Samwise, Meriadoc and Peregrin. When he inherits Bilbo s magic ring he becomes a Ring bearer and starts his own adventure. He doesn t like his adventure because is doesn t work out the way he always wanted it to be. Samwise Gamgee, a hobbit and the best friend of Frodo. He overhears a conversation between Frodo and the wizard Gandalf. Gandalf finds out that Sam heard everything. By way of punishment Sam has to accompany Frodo on the dangerous trip to the Prancing Pony an inn in Bree. Meriadoc Brandybuck, a hobbit and best friend of Pippin. Almost everyone calls him Merry. He gets himself in much trouble. His heart is strong and he wants to do everything to help his friends. Peregrin Took, a hobbit who is called Pippin by everyone. He has lots of humour. When he and Merry are captured by Treebeard, it s his idea to destroy Isengard. Boromir, a man of Gondor and the eldest son of the steward. He always wants to use the ring against Sauron, but at the last moments of his life he understands that that should cause the death of the free Peoples of Middle-Earth. Sauron, the dark lord came to Middle-Earth at the beginning of the first age. He only came to destroy Middle-Earth but made a great mistake by thinking no one would defend themselves Pagina 2 van 7

Saruman, the wizard and head of the white council. He fell into darkness when he delved to deep into the study of his enemy s ways. He s building up an army of more than Uruk-Hais; a mixture of Orcs and goblins Gandalf, the wizard is a member of the white council and one of the five Istari ( wise ). He always tries to help everyone in the world. Gandalf is also known as Mithrandir ( grey wanderer ). He carries a staff which lights up in the dark and that is also a magic staff. He has been fighting Sauron and his servants for about 2000 years. He bears one of the Elven rings. Théoden is the king of Rohan; one of the big kingdoms of men. His decisions are sometimes a little bit the decisions of a coward. He always tries to flee for the war and when he can t flee anymore he pulls back in the big fortress of Rohan: Helms Deep. This fortress has a big wall of massive stone with one little place where water can leave the fortress. This hole is the reason that Rohan almost falls. Eómer is the prince of Rohan. He is banished for saying to the king that there is war coming. He has 2000 loyal men riding with him through Rohan and killing all the Uruk-Hai they meet. Eówyn is the princess of Rohan and sister of Eómer. She s in love with Aragorn but he doesn t love her. She isn t afraid of anything but she s very afraid of staying at home till all chances of valour are gone, because she is not allowed to go to war. Faramir is a captain of Gondor. He really wants to show his father his qualities. His father believes that only his brother Boromir has the quality to defend the free peoples of Middle Earth. Treebeard is the leader of the Ents of Fangorn. He likes to walk in the forest. He must take care of Merry and Pippin. When they come close to Isengard he sees that all the trees have been cut down. He is very frustrated about it and launches an attack on Isengard. The mouth of Sauron is the messenger of Sauron. He tells the free peoples what they must do to get peace with Sauron. The Nazgûl are ringwraiths. They used to be ancient kings. When Sauron gave all nine rings of power they became his slaves. They are always chasing the ring. They are terrifying when they get close to you. Denethor is the steward of Gondor. He sees Sauron s plans in the Palantir but he does not interfere because his army is much smaller than Sauron s. Bilbo is also a hobbit of the sleepy Shire. He bore the ring during sixty years and did not get older during this period. When he inherited the ring to Frodo his body aged quickly. Elrond is king of Rivendell and one of the three leaders of the elves. He wants friendship between all the free peoples. He sends the elves one group after the other to the Grey Havens where they can sail to the Pagina 3 van 7

Undying Lands. Together with Gandalf and Galadriel he bears one of the Elven Rings. Lurtz is the Leader of the Uruk-Hai. He is the first of Saruman s men. He kills Boromir in Amon Hen. Galadriel is the queen of the Elves of Lórien and bears an Elven Ring. If you really want something like reinforcement or help she can read your mind. Celeborn is the husband of Galadriel and king of Lórien. He always welcomes visitors to his magic forest. He is afraid that he can t defend Lórien against evil forces like those of Sauron and Saruman. When war comes to Rohan he sends reinforcements. Thanks to this Rohan survives the big attack of Saruman. Arwen is the daughter of Elrond and princess of Rivendell. She is in love with Aragorn and gives him her Evenstar, a jewel that gives her immortality and can protect him. She doesn t go to the Grey Havens like her father wants, because she has still hope and doesn t want to lose Aragorn. Haldir is the protector of Lórien. He is a good friend of Aragorn and the fellowship. He leads the army of the elves in Helms Deep but he dies there. Wormtongue is a servant and spy of Saruman. He is in love with Eówyn but she hates him. He pretends he s an advisor of king Théoden but because of him Saruman can bewitch Théoden. He tries to let the king do nothing against the marching army of Saruman. The Return of the King Like The Fellowship and the Two Towers this story also consists of two books. The story tells about the war in Gondor and about finishing touch of the destruction of Evil. King Aragorn returns on his throne. Book V - The War of the Ring When Pippin wakes up they are still riding at high speed. Gandalf says they have just come into the land of Gondor. Two days later they see the white city of Minas Tirith. When they arrive at the Big Halls of Denethor Gandalf tells Pippin to keep his mouth shut because Denethor might not know anything about Aragorn and the death of Boromir. Entering the hall they find Denethor crying and holding the horn Boromir used to bear. Denethor tells them he knows about Aragorn and that he won t bow for him. Gandalf gets furious because a steward may not corrupt the return of the King. Pippin forgets what Gandalf told him and tells Denethor that Boromir died to save him and his best friend Merry. Pippin offers Denethor his service. This is accepted by Denethor and he tells Pippin to come the next morning to be introduced. Pippin didn t expect that he was become part of the Guards of the Citadel. When he returns to his room Gandalf has left. That night Gandalf returns and they see a gloom of light spiral wise going up. Gandalf says this was the signal from Minas Morgul to Sauron that they are ready to attack. In the meantime at Rohan Merry meets Aragorn. Legolas and Gimli are standing nearby with their horses. The four remainders of the Fellowship pass the Fords of the Isen together with the king Théoden and his Pagina 4 van 7

men. Soon a Rider from the rear catches up with them. He says that there are many riders behind them. They ride very fast and proof to be Dúnedain, rangers from the north who always try to protect the shire and the lands over there. They bring Aragorn a word of Lady Arwen of Rivendell, who wants to say goodbye one last time. When there s a muster at Dunharrow, a hill from where the riders of Rohan always go to Gondor. On the day of leaving to Gondor, Aragorn leaves Théoden and his men. Legolas and Gimli join him. Together they go inside the Dimholt to get the army of the Dead to help them. The king of the Dead obeys only the one who bears the sword of Elendil. With the king of the Dead they go south to destroy the ships of the Corsairs of Umbar. Merry and Eówyn are not allowed to join them but Eówyn disguises herself and takes Merry on her horse. Gandalf wakes Pippin very early because he must get ready to learn his new duties. Suddenly he sees some Black Riders in the air on fell beasts. They are Nazgûl and the indication of the coming fight. They chase the soldiers who have been protecting Osgiliath. Their leader Faramir has retreated. He knows his father Denethor will be furious because he easily gave the frontlines away. Gandalf rides to Faramir and his man to save them. He drives the Nazgûl away by using the Lights of the Istari. Faramir is very surprised to see Pippin and Gandalf can read from his eyes that it is not the first Hobbit he meets. Faramir tells Gandalf about Frodo and Sam and that they are taking the road through the Morgul Valley. Gandalf immediately understands that Frodo and Sam probably have been in the valley when the army of Minas Morgul came out. So the Ring could be already in Sauron s hands. When Faramir arrives, Denethor gives him the order to attack Osgiliath to retake it. Faramir knows his father actually wanted that he had died and Boromir was still alive. Because this is impossible Faramir does what his father wants even when Gandalf tells him it s useless. That day Faramir returns, he s deadly hurt. Denethor believes his son is dead. So he prepares a pyre for him and Faramir. His biggest fear comes true, because he sees that with Faramir the whole army of Mordor has come. Because of his fear Denethor tells the soldiers to leave there post and run for their lives. But Gandalf stops Denethor by telling the soldiers that if they fall everything they love will be destroyed. The soldiers stay on their posts. When the Siege of Minas Tirith begins, the Rohirrim still have not arrived. The Rohirrim have lost all hope now Aragorn has left them. Because of Théoden has said that they should continue for their honour, the Rohirrim still go on to Minas Tirith. They can t stop the army of Mordor yet, but they re coming. The soldiers of Mordor start the Attack and during the fight eight gigantic trolls pull on a huge ram named Grond to storm the gate of the keep. The gate falls and the men must retreat to the second of the seven levels. During the retreat Pippin goes down to Gandalf and tells him that Denethor is going to set himself and Faramir on fire even though Faramir is still alive. Gandalf immediately rides to the pyre and stops Denethor. By saving Faramir he must throw Denethor in the burning pyre; from which Denethor jumps off when he sees Faramir is alive. He jumps of the rock which is splitting all the levels in twice. When Gandalf comes outside again the soldiers are retreating to the sixth level. Even Gandalf can t hold the city anymore and they must retreat to the last level. When they have just like in Helms Deep retreated into the last building, they hear a horn and Gandalf immediately knows it s the horn of Rohan and that Théoden has arrived at last. While Gandalf is kept in the last building, Théoden faces the armies of Mordor. During the fight the Pagina 5 van 7

Haradhrim come with their Mumakils, huge beast that look like elephants but with larger tusks. The Rohirrim kill almost all the Mumakils but the Nazgûl attack the Rohirrim. Their leader the Witch-King skims over their heads and suddenly grasps Théoden and his horse and throws them away. When the Fell Beast wants to eat Théoden, Eówyn jumps between them and cuts the Beast's head off. The Witch-King is very angry about it and gets off the dead beast. He attacks Eówyn with a mace. Eówyn breaks her arm and when the Witch-King wants to hit her deadly Merry sticks his little sword in his leg. He kneels and Eówyn sticks a knife in his helmet. This way she kills the Witch-King. During Eówyn s battle with the Witch-King in the harbour of Minas Tirith the Corsairs ships arrive. There are many Orcs waiting for them, but when Aragorn jumps out of one of the boats, they know something is wrong. Aragorn brings the army of the Dead. Together they defeat all soldiers in and outside Minas Tirith. The remaining soldiers bring the wounded to the Houses of Healing. There Faramir and Eówyn meet each other and they become very good friends. Théoden dies in the Houses of Healing. In the big halls of Minas Tirith Aragorn and the other big leaders discuss what they must do now. They decide to attack Mordor to give Frodo a chance to get to Mount Doom. Some days later they go to the Black Gate with all the soldiers who want to come after they have been told there is a fair chance they'll die. At the Black Gate the Mouth of Sauron gets out and tells them Mordor wants peace if they give in to many of Sauron s demands. They refuse and the gate opens again but now there are thousands of soldiers behind it. During the fight some Nazgûl arrive but then Pippin sees that many eagles have come to help them. Book VI - The end of the Third Age The Orcs rob Frodo and start to fight each other. When almost all the Orcs have died Sam enters the tower of Cirith Ungol and searches for Frodo. Sam finds Frodo at the moment an Orc tries to kill him, but Sam kills the Orc first. In the tower they find some Orcs clothes. They put them on to their disguise. A long journey begins through Mordor where there is ash all around. When they walk to the entrance of Mount Doom, Gollum attacks them which means that he climbed out of the hole, Sam threw him at the other side of the tunnel of Cirith Ungul. During Sam s fight with Gollum Frodo walks on to the entrance. Sam defeats Gollum and hurries after Frodo, who is already inside Mount Doom. There Frodo doubts if he should throw the Ring into the fire or if he should keep him. He decides the latter. Frodo puts on the Ring but Gollum who has followed them, attacks him. Gollum bites Frodo s finger with the Ring off. So now he has the Ring. Frodo is angry about it and starts a fight with Gollum and throws him in the fire of Mount Doom. The Ring melts away which causes Mount Doom to erupt. Frodo and Sam manage to escape only just. In the meantime at the Black Gate Aragorn is fighting the Orcs and the Eagles are attacking the Nazgûl. When they see the Eye of Sauron brightens the Tower of Barad-Dûr, where the Eye had been standing on, collapses. The soldiers of Good and Evil understand that the Ring has been destroyed. They are all very happy. But when Mount Doom erupts they think Frodo has died and they are all very shocked. Gandalf sets out on an eagle to look for Frodo and Sam. He finds them on high rock next to Mount Doom. He brings them to Aragorn and his soldiers. They all travel to the city of Minas Tirith. The lords of the west scream to the people of Minas Tirith that they must sing for the realm of Sauron has ended forever and the Dark Tower has been thrown down. Pagina 6 van 7

In spring and summer messengers went to all the countries of Middle Earth to bring the message the king soon will return to the throne and that they are all invited to the coronation. At the coronation Gandalf puts the crown on the head of Aragorn. Subsequently, Aragorn walks on the rock which is splitting all the levels in twice. All the people bow before him and when he comes to the Elves of Rivendell he sees lady Arwen is with them. He immediately asks her to marry him. She agrees and walks with past all the other peoples. When they come to the Hobbits Aragorn bows for them and all the people on the rock do the same. The Hobbits stay in Minas Tirith for a while. They are very pleased to hear that Faramir and Eówyn are getting married. And that Eómer will be the king of Rohan, instead of Théoden, when he returns to Edoras. The Hobbits go back home. When they are very close to the Shire, Gandalf leaves them to go to the house of Tom Bombadil. Arriving at the shire they see a great wall has been built around it. Inside they are being captured by some Hobbits. They are being kept in prison but manage to escape. They go to the Square of Hobbiton where they find out that they have to scour the Shire. Pippin goes to a farmer who has much influence, while Merry blows the horn lady Eówyn has given him. This horn will provide help if he needs it. When Pippin returns with the farmer and his sons many people have gathered at the Square. They march to Bag End. When they arrive there Saruman gets out. Frodo wants to know if Wormtongue is also here. Saruman confirms that and calls Wormtongue, who comes out. Frodo says they must leave and never come back into the Shire. Saruman agrees and says Wormtongue must come with him. Frodo tells Wormtongue that he doesn t have to follow Saruman anymore because he is not his master anymore. While Saruman and Wormtongue are leaving, Saruman gets his knife and sticks it into Frodo. Frodo isn t hurt thanks to the mithril. Saruman is annoyed about this. Walking the street out of the Shire Wormtongue suddenly leaps forward and kills Saruman by cutting his throat. He runs away but the Hobbits shoot their arrows on him and kill Wormtongue. The Hobbits set all prisoners Saruman made free. Three years later Gandalf arrives with Bilbo, Galadriel, Celeborn and Elrond in the Shire to take Frodo with them to the Grey Havens. When they go into the boat, that will bring them to the Undying-Lands Sam, Merry and Pippin run into the Grey Havens because they saw Frodo leaving. Frodo tells them that they had to go to Mordor to save the Shire, which has been saved but not for him. He wants to stay with Bilbo and Gandalf. Therewith the Fellowship really comes to an end. My opinion I enjoyed reading all the books because they gave me a lot of fun. They are full of humour, fantasy, sadness and happiness. Some things are being told without a proper end. Pagina 7 van 7
