2 Second Language Benchmark 1 (PRE-NOVICE) Benchmark 1 students are at the very beginning stages of second language study. Students mastering Benchmark 1 requirements will demonstrate minimal ability in the Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening Modes. After 30 cumulative instructional hours students should be able to recognize limited vocabulary and understand simple directions and have limited reading ability using some contextual or visual cues. Their writing and speaking ability will be limited to such activities as copying lists of some familiar words or naming a limited number of common objects or actions. 11 Benchmark 3 (Approximates ACTFL NOVICE-MID) Upon completion of approximately hours of cumulative instruction, Benchmark 3 students will demonstrate understanding of main ideas on familiar topics, identify some important ideas embedded in familiar contexts and recognize differences between formal and informal language. They will demonstrate understanding of short predictable texts on benchmark topics. Writing and speaking skills now include the presentation of basic material, short written messages and the expression of simple ideas using memorized phrases and sentences. Interpersonal Mode: Speaking (Corresponds to ASL Expressive Skills) Understand and respond to what others say/sign. SL.NM.IS.01 Use memorized phrases, sentences and questions to express ideas or obtain information on a limited range of topics in everyday situations.
