6 Consider this counsel from President Thomas S. Monson on preparing for your life s work I hope that you are not afraid of tough classes. I never did have a cinch class. I hope that you are not afraid of lengthy periods of preparation. Burn the midnight oil. Don t procrastinate like my older sister, who after a late date rationalized, I have a test tomorrow, but I am weary. What is more important, my health or my test? Aha, my health! I need my sleep. So she slept. I won t say what happened to the test.

7 President Monson Cont. You simply have to apply yourself. I hope that you want to be so well equipped that you can compete in this competitive world. I hope that you will learn to take responsibility for your decisions, whether they be in your courses of study which you elect to take, or whether they be in the direction of the academic attainments which you strive to achieve.

8 President Monson Cont. Should you become discouraged or feel burdened down, remember that others have passed this same way; they have endured and then have achieved. When we have done all that we are able to do, we can then rely on God s promised help. CES Fireside for Young Adults 7 September 2003

46 Career Decisions In choosing an occupation, please be mindful of what you do best not just what you like to do but where your aptitudes are and where the gifts and talents are that you have been given. Then ask yourself, Where can I get the best training experiences to develop my talents? Look for the college or company where you can make a contribution and continue your learning and training.

47 Career Decisions Take an opportunity to observe how someone else is doing it right. Then you will gain the experience and the confidence to be able to do it yourself. Whatever endeavor you want to explore, associate with people who have valuable experience. Associate with people who really know what they are doing. RETURN, Pg

52 Take Responsibility When I was a teenager, I helped my father varnish the floor in a downstairs room in our house. He watched me as I slowly painted myself into a corner and had no way to get out without stepping across the freshly shellacked floor. I asked, What do I do? I ll never forget his answer: Robert, don t ever do that in your life.

59 The Value of the Brand? In a world that grows increasingly dark because of distrust, cynicism, and unethical behavior graduates of Brigham Young University Idaho must radiate the light of integrity and honesty. This university, one of the Lord's universities, will ultimately be recognized as an institution where integrity and honesty are as common and consistent as a windy afternoon in Rexburg. It was given to Elder Rudd as a gift and remains an apt symbol of its current owner, whose life has been defined by gospel work and effort to better the temporal and spiritual welfare of others. (Elder Rudd retired at age 95)
