3 Greaggria Livingstone DeLoach was born January 18, 1915 in Mecklenburg County, Charlotte, North Carolina. She was the beloved daughter of Daniel and Corrie (McQueary) Livingstone. Her parents were among the historical movement of the Great Migration arriving in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1919 when Greaggria was four years of age. She was affectionately called Aunt Babe or Aunt Greg by her great multitude of family members of nieces and nephews and cousins spanning across six existing generations. Greaggria was the the second of the eldest of Daniel and Corrie s five children. Evelyn Conyers, Ollie and Daniel Livingstone and, Thelma Morris and Elizabeth Benekin predeceased their sister Greg. She was very close to her siblings. She lived many of her latter years in residence with her sister Evelyn and her niece Valeria Patsy Conyers. Greaggria became Confirmed and fully initiated member of Christ the King Church Catholic Church during the early years of the parish s development in During the early 1950 s Greaggria entered into Holy Matrimony with Dell DeLoach. They relocated to Chicago, Illinois where they lived for several years then returned to Jersey City. Her husband Dell was a member of St. John s Baptist Church and Greaggria was ecumenical in her participation at her church of origin Christ the King and the faith community of her husband, St. John s. After the death of her husband, Aunt Greg was faithful to a marital promise and continued her relationship with both faith communities. Greaggria lived the remaining years of her life as a widow, assisting in the caring for her many nieces and nephews. She and her sister Evelyn also cared for their aging mother Corrie until the time of their mom s passing in Greaggria grew up on Ege Avenue and was educated in the Public School system of Jersey City. She attended Henry
4 Snyder High School. She was a faithful employee for many years at the Standard Laundry until the business closed. She was later employed at Emerson Radio and Television Corporation until her retirement. During her retirement she took on another mission as a Foster Grandmother for the Jersey City Child Development Agency. She loved this relationship with the children of Jersey City, who were in need of the wisdom and care and guidance of an elder figure. She remained in this role until well into her late eighties. She was a faithful pillar at the after-school care center for these children and their families. Greaggria Livingstone DeLoach was an example, that maternal care was not limited to caring for one s own biological children but that mothering presented itself in opportunities for those who had not given birth to their own children. This is evidenced by her caring for her nephews, William Jr. and Philip Morris upon the death of their mother Thelma. Aunt Babe loved her family. She was a strong no nonsense Elder. Greg was dignified and respectful of her role as an Elder and Matriarch to her McQueary, Livingstone and Fleming family members. She was devout in her Christian witness and was a prayerful woman who relied heavily on her Bible. She was the godmother to several of her family members, Warren Fleming and Audrey Livingstone whom she provided with a Catholic high school education. Greaggria was a fashionable woman who loved her hats and beautiful clothes and her color purple. In her youth she was also a great dancer- dancing the Lindy at the Savoy with her brother Daniel. Greaggria lived out her last decade of life in the Long-Term Care Facility at Hamilton Park/Alaris Health facility. She continued to be vibrant in mind and spirit to the very last minutes of her life. Aunt Greg s 103 year old legacy of life has blessed all who knew her. Her nieces Veronica Benekin and Jeanette Lewis who were faithful in their continued care of Aunt Babe can attest to
5 Auntie s continued spirit of fire even at 103 years of age. Aunt Greg s quick wit and sense of humor and deep abiding love for family softened any spirit of correction that she may have engaged to insure the upright behavior of her family members. The 100th Centennial of Greaggria Livingstone DeLoach was celebrated with much joy on January 18th, Even after 100 hundred years of living - the Lord continued to bless her with three more years of existence. Three significant for spiritual completeness. So it is - that Aunt Greg in her mind, body and spirit had completed her mission that the Lord had for her on this earthly plain and called her home to be with Him and her family. Aunt Greg waited on the Lord for the past number of years. She could often be heard pondering the question, as to why the Lord was allowing her to live here all of these years separated from her family of parents, brothers and sisters and husband? Yet she waited in faith. On Monday, January 29, 2018 in the Three O clock in the afternoon hour, the Lord heard Greaggria s cry and called her home. In the midst of a peaceful afternoon nap, during that great hour of the Lord s own death The Redeemer escorted Greaggria Livingstone DeLoach to his heavenly temple. She leaves to mourn- her first generation of nieces and nephews, Audrey, Priscilla, Daniel, Henry (Barbara Jean) Livingstone, Veronica Benekin, Jeanette Lewis and Valeria Patsy Conyers, and a host of five generation of grand and great grand nieces and nephews and her beloved cousins of the Livingstone, McQueary, Fleming families. We loved her! We called her Aunt Babe but we were her children yet- she was a child of God and He called her home to receive her crown and her robe of righteousness! So now she dances and sings her song in the presence of the Lord, I am going to put on my robe and tell my story of how I made it over- I will wear my crown.
6 I shall wear a crown - I shall wear a crown When it s all over - When it s all over I shall wear a crown I shall wear a crown When it s all over When it s all over I am going to put on my robe, tell the story how I made it over I am going to put on my robe, tell the story how I made it over Soon as I get home Soon as I get home I shall see His face I shall see His face Soon as I get home. (Courtesy of Thomas Whitfield & Trey McLaughlin) The family would like to thank the nieces Veronica Benekin for making the preparations for Aunt Babes s Homegoing Celebration and Jeanette Lewis for coordinating the Repast. The family extends their heartfelt thank you to the Hamilton Park/Alaris Health for the care and attention they provided our beloved Aunt Greaggria. May the Lord Bless you and keep you and shine His face upon you and be gracious to you. May the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace.
