1 Stamford Street Methodist Church From 1797 the leading Methodist group in Ashton was the Methodist New Connexion (MNC) and in 1791 they had acquired this plot in the newly laid out area west of the parish church. In 1799 they built a fairly small chapel at the back of the plot along with a number of cottages. In front of the chapel they created a graveyard from 1803, probably as a useful source of income. As the population of the town increased so the congregation grew and so the chapel had to be

2 enlarged or rebuilt. This took place in 1831 and brought the front of the chapel almost to the Stamford Street frontage. Probably building over the occupied part of the graveyard ---- were remains re-interred? Burials continued until the 1850s, but there was no prospect of extending the graveyard as land on the east side of the chapel was needed for successive Sunday School buildings. At least one President of the Methodist New Connexion is buried here. Alan Rose Tameside History Forum and Methodist Archivist

3 Their first chapel in Ashton was in Harrop s Yard and the following sketch shows the original datestone in the lintel over the door. This stone was moved into the grounds of the chapel on Stamford Street in 1927 and has now been moved again into the porch of Albion United Reformed Church for safekeeping. Mary Whitehead - Tameside History Forum and Albion Congregational Chapel
