The Daily Disciple September 2018
One-Minute Summary A quick review of the most important information in the newsletter. Pastor Joel encourages you to get connected to a Bible Study this fall. The new Fall sermon series: The FACTS of Discipleship. Starts Sept. 9 All of our programming starts this month for our kids and youth. Take a look at Tory s article for more information on what s happening and when! Check out pgs. 6 & 7 for upcoming events at First Church! Please look at the top of pg. 4 for an important reminder for the consistory! Pg. 17 is filled with new small groups/bible studies you can join. Check it out & get involved! 1
A word from Pastor Joel Dear Church, In many ways, September marks the beginning of the year. Children are back at school and fall sports have begun. This fall also marked a first for us as a family. JoJo started preschool last week and she loves it! September also marks the beginning of a lot of ministries at First Church. Children s Sunday School and Youth Group start up again soon. Adult Bible studies that took a break for the summer will also resume. We are even offering something new this fall. On Sunday nights, First Church will host Dave Ramsey s Financial Peace University. It is a great opportunity to look at finances from a Biblical perspective and learn what it means to be a good steward of your resources. You can find information about all these Bible Studies as well as other opportunities to grow in your faith in this month s edition of the Daily Disciple. I hope and pray that you take the opportunity this fall to connect with a small group Bible study in order to continue Growing Together. During our planning week in August, I had an opportunity to work on the preaching schedule for the coming year. I am very excited about our first series. Beginning on September 9, I will preach on The FACTS of Discipleship. We often talk about what disciples are supposed to do: read the Bible, pray, go to church. But what does it mean to be a disciple? A disciple should be Faithful, Authentic, Committed, Teachable, and a Servant. Join us at First Church or listen on the radio as we explore the FACTS of Discipleship together. Hope to see you there! In Christ, Pastor Joel 2
A word from our Youth Pastor Tory I cannot believe that we are almost to fall! I cannot wait for cooler temperatures and fall weather. The start of a new year of ministry is one of my favorite things about fall! We have been planning, praying and preparing for the school year for months and it s almost time to kick everything off! We have an exciting year for our youth group students! Our theme this year is BE. God is always molding and shaping us to be more and more like him. We will be talking about who God has created and called us to be. Our verse for the year is Acts 17:28- For in Him we live and move and have our being. This year our high school students will have the opportunity to get involved in the leadership of our youth group. We are putting together a students leadership team. Our goal for this team is to help our students take ownership in our youth group and church. This team will be made up of two high school students from each grade. Our student leadership team will be focused on Christ-like leadership, helping plan out youth ministry events and praying for their peers. Students will have to submit an application in order to participate on this team. Applications will go out on the first night of youth group. Parents I encourage you to talk with your students about getting involved on this team! As we begin the new school year please keep our kids, students, and leadership in your prayers! Blessings, Tory 3

Consistory Update The Consistory has called for a Congregational Meeting on Sunday, September 9 immediately following the 9:00 am service. The purpose is to approve the cost of asbestos removal from the church basement & pipe fittings in the sanctuary and to discuss & answer questions about the furnace project. The trustees received three quotes for the asbestos removal process and have selected the quote of $26, from Total Environmental Services of Toledo for presentation to the congregation. There will be opportunities for questions and discussion at the congregational meeting. We encourage you to attend. Other items taken action on: Approved the purchase of a new computer for the Pastor at a cost of $2, Approved hiring Smith-Boughan for professional engineering services to work with the trustees to develop a Request for Proposal (RFP) which will be used to solicit bids for the furnace replacement project at a cost of $3, Approved a quote from Brumbaugh-Herrick Environmental to perform post asbestos removal air quality testing at a cost of $1, This is contingent on the passage of the asbestos removal request. Tabled a quote for replacing the failing phone system in the church and offices. The current system is 15+ years old and beginning to malfunction. The consistory asked the trustees to seek further information on additional costs to move the key system control panel from the church to the ministry center and come back with an updated quote at the September meeting. 8
Dear Friends at First Church, thank you for the beautiful red rose for our 53 rd wedding anniversary. Also thank you for all of the thoughts and prayers for Sue s recovery. We appreciated them so much. Jerry & Sue Lehman Dear First Church, It is with so much gratefulness in my heart that I can say that I am fully funded for my trip to India. I want to say thank you again to our church for your generosity & support as I continue pursing my passion in missions. I only pray that I can be God s light sharing his Love and worth for his people in India & wherever he brings me in this lifetime. As the days get closer to my time to return to India it brings a lot of emotions. If you could continue to pray that God would prepare my heart that would mean so much to me. Also pray for my transitioning to India, health, and safety. Shannon Roediger Dear First Church of New Knoxville, Thank you for your donation to Younglives in Zanesville, Ohio. For Regular Maintenance $126, Financial FAQ Each month the treasurer will answer commonly asked questions about the financial reports. Have a question? Send it to her at connie.schroer@nktelco.net What is the Bequest & Endowment Fund? This is where interest earnings have gone for many years (and still go) from several of the church s invested endowments and a savings account. There are no specific restrictions on this fund. What is the difference between the Building Maintenance Fund and the Building Improvements and Technology Fund? The building maintenance fund is the long standing fund that is used for general upkeep, large and small projects, and overall care of the church and ministry center buildings. (This does NOT include utilities, custodial supplies or kitchen supplies - those are paid from the general fund.) The building technology and improvement fund was created at the beginning of 2018 in order to begin saving for future upgrades in technology, radio & sound equipment or anything that would not be considered maintenance or repairs of anything existing. It is not restricted to these things however and consistory could vote to transfer funds to the regular maintenance fund if necessary. 14

Mid-Year Pledge Card Reminder If you haven t considered your general fund pledge yet, we ask that you prayerfully consider your giving for the remainder of the year. The general fund of First Church is where the day to day operations and expenses are paid. Your generosity allows First Church to minister both within and outside of our doors. Heating System Gifts - We have begun to receive donations for the upcoming heating system project. If you would like to make a gift to this upcoming project please mark your check, envelope or online gift for the Building Maintenance Fund and add Heating System in the memo line. The Gospel Project will take us on a Christ-centered chronological study that shows God s love for His people and the redemption He promised through all of scripture. One of our main goals of our Sunday School ministry is to help you and your children grow in relationship with Christ in the home. The Gospel Project provides a family app on iphone and Android phones and family connecting cards for you to use throughout the week. We hope that you all will use these resources to connect with your children during the week! We are always looking for more help in our Sunday school classes. If you have been thinking about helping out in Sunday school, please contact Tory Breitigan. Our teachers would love and appreciate the help! We also want to encourage parents to come and sit in on your child s class this year. It s a great way to see what your child is learning and how they are growing in their faith!
