2 Genesis 40: The Cupbearer & the Baker 1 Some time later, the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt offended their master, the king of Egypt. 2 Pharaoh was angry with his two officials, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker, 3 and put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the same prison where Joseph was confined. 4 The captain of the guard assigned them to Joseph, and he attended them.

3 Genesis 40: The Cupbearer & the Baker After they had been in custody for some time, 5 each of the two men the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were being held in prison had a dream the same night, and each dream had a meaning of its own. 6 When Joseph came to them the next morning, he saw that they were dejected. 7 So he asked Pharaoh's officials who were in custody with him in his master's house, "Why are your faces so sad today?"

4 Genesis 40: The Cupbearer & the Baker 8 "We both had dreams," they answered, "but there is no one to interpret them." Then Joseph said to them, "Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams." 9 So the chief cupbearer told Joseph his dream. He said to him, "In my dream I saw a vine in front of me, 10 and on the vine were three branches. As soon as it budded, it blossomed, and its clusters ripened into grapes. 11 Pharaoh's cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes, squeezed them into Pharaoh's cup and put the cup in his hand.

"The three branches are three days. 13 Within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your position, and you will put Pharaoh's cup in his hand, just as you used to do when you were his cupbearer. 14 But when all goes well with you, remember me and show me kindness; mention me to Pharaoh and get me out of this prison. 15 For I was forcibly carried off from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done nothing to deserve being put in a dungeon.

6 Genesis 40: The Cupbearer & the Baker 16 When the chief baker saw that Joseph had given a favorable interpretation, he said to Joseph, "I too had a dream: On my head were three baskets of bread. 17 In the top basket were all kinds of baked goods for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating them out of the basket on my head." 18 "This is what it means," Joseph said. "The three baskets are three days. 19 Within three days Pharaoh will lift off your head and hang you on a tree. And the birds will eat away your flesh.

7 Genesis 40: The Cupbearer & the Baker 20 Now the third day was Pharaoh's birthday, and he gave a feast for all his officials. He lifted up the heads of the chief cupbearer and the chief baker in the presence of his officials: 21 He restored the chief cupbearer to his position, so that he once again put the cup into Pharaoh's hand, 22 but he hanged [c] the chief baker, just as Joseph had said to them in his interpretation. 23 The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph; he forgot him.

8 A. INTRODUCTION JOSEPH: Favoured by his father Hated and sold by his own brothers as a slave, through no fault of his own; Favoured by his master (Potiphar) Slandered by his own master s wife and put into prison for a crime and sin he did not commit.

9 A. INTRODUCTION Joseph experienced tragedies, not once but twice BUT in the midst of all these tragedies of life, the LORD (YAHWEH) was with him. YHWH: The Name of God in the Hebrew language is YUD HEI VAV HEI 2 HEI (THE GRACE OF GOD).

10 A. INTRODUCTION The two HEI (Grace) of God attended to Joseph in both the tragedies of his life The Lord was with him. Grace: not a subject or a topic or one of the attributes of God, but is the person of The Lord Himself. The Grace of God came in the Person of our Lord Jesus Christ.

11 A. INTRODUCTION John 1:14 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:17 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

INTRODUCTION Titus 2: For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. 12 It teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.

13 A. INTRODUCTION Joseph: thrown into a PIT and now into a PRISON. In both TRAGEDIES, Joseph emerged TRIUMPHANT and REIGNED IN LIFE: He was made in charge of his master s (Potiphar) household (Gen 39:4) He was made in charge of all those held in prison (Gen 39:22)

14 A. INTRODUCTION Deuteronomy 28:13 13 The LORD will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the LORD your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom.

15 A. INTRODUCTION Romans 5:17 17 For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God's abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ.

JOSEPH: THE DREAM INTERPRETER Joseph: In prison: two other prisoners from Pharaoh s court the Cupbearer and the Baker Both had a dream they could not understand acknowledged by faith that the Lord was still with him even though it was yet another dark episode in his life (vs 8: Then Joseph said to them, "Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams. ) & interpreted their dreams for them.

17 C. THE CUPBEARER S DREAM The Cupbearer a vine on the vine were three branches. it budded, it blossomed, and its clusters ripened into grapes. took the grapes, squeezed them into Pharaoh's cup and put the cup in his hand.

18 C. THE CUPBEARER S DREAM The Interpretation by Joseph: The three branches are three days. Within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your position, and you will put Pharaoh's cup in his hand, just as you used to do when you were his cupbearer.

THE CUPBEARER S DREAM A Picture Of: Juice from the grapes blood of the grapes (Edom) Adam red-blooded man Sin means falling short of the mark just as the cup bearer and the baker who fell short of the mark of Pharaoh. Gen. 40:1-2: They had offended the Pharaoh and Pharaoh was very angry with them and thrown them into prison.

20 C. THE CUPBEARER S DREAM Likewise, we too had offended God and were in the prison of darkness. Mankind had fallen short of the mark of the life that God had intended mankind to inherit and live by. Romans 3:23... for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,...

21 D. JESUS THE TRUE VINE John 15:1 1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. The grapes squeezed and produced grape juice. Jesus was like grapes crushed, shedding His blood for the forgiveness of our sin. As soon the grapes juice was poured out, the cup bearer was restored and his head lifted up.

22 D. JESUS THE TRUE VINE Zechariah 13:1 1 "On that day a fountain will be opened to the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and impurity.

23 D. JESUS THE TRUE VINE Hebrews 10:1-4 Christ's Sacrifice Once for All 1 The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship. 2 If it could, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins.

24 D. JESUS THE TRUE VINE Hebrews 10:1-4 3 But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins, 4 because it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

JESUS THE TRUE VINE Hebrews 10: Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God. 13 Since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool, 14 because by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.

26 D. JESUS THE TRUE VINE Hebrews 10: The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this. First he says: 16 "This is the covenant I will make with them after that time, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds." 17 Then he adds: Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more. " 18 And where these have been forgiven, there is no longer any sacrifice for sin.

JESUS THE TRUE VINE Hebrews 10: Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.

28 D. JESUS THE TRUE VINE Revelation 5: Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing in the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. He had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. 7 He came and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne. 8 And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twentyfour elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.

JESUS THE TRUE VINE Revelation 5: And they sang a new song: "You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation. 10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth."

30 D. JESUS THE TRUE VINE The Cupbearer was restored to his position But we, who are purchased by the precious and priceless blood of the Son of God, are not restored to Adam s position We have been raised up with Christ and seated with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:6).

31 D. JESUS THE TRUE VINE a. Raised To A New Life Romans 6:4 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. We are not restored to the human life before the Fall of Adam. We are made partakers of the divine life.

32 D. JESUS THE TRUE VINE a. Raised To A New Life 2 Peter 1:3-5 (KJV) 3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: 4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

33 D. JESUS THE TRUE VINE Jesus had come that we may have life and life in all its fullness: the Abundant Life (John 10:10) This is the Zoe Life the Divine Life, not human life. (Jesus was speaking to a group of Pharisees who were very much alive and breathing.)

Faith In The Blood Romans 3:21-26 Righteousness Through Faith 21 But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22 This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

35 D. JESUS THE TRUE VINE b. Faith In The Blood Romans 3: God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished 26 he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.

36 E. THE BAKER S DREAM The Baker The dream of the Baker was bloodless (baked goods) Baked goods: represent the works of man, man s own righteousness and efforts.

37 E. THE BAKER S DREAM Eg. The Story of Cain and Abel (Gen 4) Abel offered the firstborn of his flock (blood was shed) Cain offered some fruits of the soil (bloodless offering) Gen. 4:4 The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, 5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor.

38 E. THE BAKER S DREAM Pharoah LIFTED UP the head of the Cup Bearer and RESTORED his position. Pharoah LIFTED OFF the head of the Baker and HANGED him. God requires blood for the forgiveness of sin Hebrews 9: 22 In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

39 E. THE BAKER S DREAM Life Is In The Blood Leviticus 17: 11 For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one's life. The divine life of the Lord Jesus is in the blood he shed for us. He exchanged His divine life for our fallen human life, hence making us partakers of His divine nature.

40 F. THE BLOOD-BOUGHT LIFE We, who are in Christ, have a blood-bought right: To be saved To be healed To be blessed To be favoured To be victorious To be the head and not the tail To be reigning in life

41 F. THE BLOOD-BOUGHT LIFE The blood of Christ has dealt with all the areas of our lives that have fallen short of the mark. Declare and claim victory through the blood of Jesus over any areas of our lives that seem to be in defeat and fallen short of what God intends us to have in Christ.
