1 Everything is Looking Green Pastor Eric Zacharias The joy of summer is that the white of winder is replaced with glorious green. The trees are full of leaves. The grass is green and lush. The fields are filled out with rows of bushy beans or columns of corn. And occasionally, a pond of water Co. Rd. 153 Cologne, MN July/August 2018 Rev. Eric Zacharias Pastor Home: Ms. Leah Janzen Administrator Church/School Office Phone: Fax: leahjanzen@zioncologne.org Website: Mission Statement Zion Lutheran Church, Cologne, MN is a branch of Christ s family saved by grace alone, rooted in God s love, and growing in faith through worship, teaching, fellowship, and service as we reach out to others with the good news of Jesus. For summer, the opposite of green is brown, the color of drought. We may fertilize and cultivate our plants, but without water, all our fields and lawns and gardens take on shades of brown. While there are a few areas still soppy with water, we give thanks for the water that is making things green. Nicely, the color of our church in summer is green.the cloth paraments on the altar, lectern and pulpit are all green. These colors will also stay green all the way through summer and into late fall. Even the readings these next months will be about how we have life and growth in Christ. The readings and sermons will focus upon your life in Christ and growing that life in Christ. Think of it as a time when Christ will be spreading spiritual mulch around you so you may grow deep roots of faith into Christ. Or think of how Christ, as the Living Water, nourishes you with baptismal waters, that you may drink deeply and be satisfied, just as you are nourished with the bread of heaven in Christ s body and blood so that you also are strong to fight off that which comes your way. Our plants and grass are not the only things that need tending this time of year. You need to be tended with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Zion is here to do that for you! Allow yourselves to be cared for by Christ in His Word and sacraments this Summer, so that you, your family, and your friends may all be nourished in Christ and have roots grown into the ever-flowing fountain of His mercy shown to you in the death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Green is good. It beats the dry and dying life we have without hope and life. Blessings to you, in Christ, Pastor Eric Zacharias

3 Superman v. Bizarro Ms. Leah Janzen Finances Account Balances As we continue to get ready for the school year, thoughts of superheroes continue running through my head. I mean, if you really think about, nothing does a better job of embodying the theme Be Strong, Be Brave, Be Fearless like a good old-fashioned righter of wrongs. Wonder Woman is strong, brave, and fearless. So is Superman. But, for every superhero there is usually also a supervillian: an equally powerful and wellequipped being who tends to do all the things a hero would never do. For every Wonder Woman there is a Circe and for every Superman there is a Lex Luthor. This made me think: if Zion was the hero, what would her villain look like. Zion Lutheran School has six fundamental truths that serve as the foundation for everything we do here: servanthood, responsibility, resolution, cooperation, respect, and affirmation. So, if we are building the perfect opponent, we are looking for the polar opposite of everything Zion stands for: a place where self-service, irresponsibility, indecision, division, disdain, and denial are commonplace. Remind you of any place in particular? I don t know about you, but I find it hard to turn on the TV nowadays without coming face to face with this Bizarro approach to everyday life. The great thing about Zion is that these cornerstones are not just fancy words we throw around to impress people. Our wonderful staff lives these truths and model them for our students every day. Our students are given daily opportunities to understand and apply these truths to their own lives and the lives of others. LHS has a mission of preparing the next generation of Christian leaders. I guess we play an integral role in that mission, as we provide that first step for all our little superheroes and that s pretty super girl (or man). Salary: Beginning Balance (1/1/2018) -$66, YTD Income *$197, YTD Expenses $189, Current Balance (6/12) -$57, Missions: YTD Total (6/17) $3, Budgeted $2, Unbudgeted $ Pledged $7, Goal $15, LHS: Year to date total (6/17) $5, Commitment $22, Per communicant member $55.00 Building/Repair Fund: Account Balance (3/19) $52, Suggested household contrib. $ Congrats to all the families who welcomed new babies over the past month. Blessings to Kindra (Boelke) and Andrew Ghostley, Ryan and Jill Rolf, and Lukas and Cora Radde and the families on their new little bundles of joy! Our thoughts and prayers are with the Henschen and Ische families as they morn the loss of Lester and Lillian. May God grant you strength during this time.
